To make your first LIT HERO recording, insert a compatible A2 V30-or-higher microSD card while the camera is off, charge the integrated battery, lock the door, install the required camera update, then press Shutter. Press Shutter again to stop, and swipe up from the bottom of the touch screen to review the clip.
The shortest route is QuikCapture: with the camera off, press Shutter once to start video. Press it again when you are finished; the camera stops recording and powers off.

What you need before turning on the LIT HERO
The camera cannot save photos or video without a separately sold memory card. Prepare the few items below before opening the door.
| Item | Requirement | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Memory card | Brand-name microSD, microSDHC or microSDXC rated Class A2 and V30 or higher | The card is sold separately. The published requirement does not identify a preferred brand or capacity. |
| Power | USB charger and the included USB C–C cable | The battery is integrated and cannot be removed. The status light turns off when charging is complete. |
| Software update | GoPro Quik on an internet-connected phone, or the manual-update route on GoPro’s update page | GoPro states that an update is required before the camera can be used. |
| Recording location | A place where the door can remain completely closed and locked | The door must be sealed before you operate the camera. |
Do not buy a card based only on storage capacity. The A2 and V30 ratings are the compatibility criteria stated for LIT HERO recording. If a card does not meet both ratings, choose another card rather than assuming a faster-looking marketing label is sufficient. The manual does not name a required capacity, so select a capacity that fits the length of your planned sessions without treating a larger card as a substitute for the required ratings.

A two-minute preflight
Before you press any button, verify four things: the card is installed while the camera is off, charging has finished, the door is latched and sealed, and the camera update is complete. This order avoids opening the door while the camera is running, recording with an unsecured door, or discovering the update requirement after you are ready to shoot. If you are filming an activity, perform this check before attaching the camera to a mount so you can reach the latch and controls easily.
Set up the camera and make the first clip
Follow these steps in order. Keeping the camera powered off while handling the card and keeping the door locked after charging prevents the two most consequential setup mistakes.
-
Insert the card with the camera off
Open the door latch and flip the door open. Slide the card in with its label facing the front of the camera. The manual says to insert or remove the card only when LIT HERO is off. If you need to reseat it later, power down first, then repeat this orientation. Never use a card-door opening as a shortcut for changing media while a clip is being written; shut the camera down first.

Charge the integrated battery
Connect the camera to a USB charger using the included USB C–C cable. Leave it connected until the status light turns off; that is the camera’s indication that charging is finished. Because the battery is built in, there is no battery-swap step between takes. Charging before the first test gives you a clear baseline for how much recording time remains and avoids confusing a low-battery shutdown with a card or software problem.
-
Close and lock the door
Unplug the cable, swing the door shut and engage the latch. Check that it is closed, locked and sealed before recording. Do not operate the camera with the cable still connected or with the latch partly engaged. Run a finger around the door edge and confirm that no cable, strap or debris is preventing the seal from sitting flat.
-
Install the required update
GoPro’s LIT HERO manual is explicit: “You must update your camera before you can use it.” You have two supported routes:
- Quik app: Open GoPro Quik on a phone with internet access and follow the camera-update prompts.
- Manual update: Open GoPro’s camera-update page, select LIT HERO, and follow the manual-update instructions shown there.
Keep the card in the camera during the update. The manual warns that removing it while the update is in progress may permanently damage the camera. Do not interrupt the update by opening the door, removing power or pressing controls unless GoPro’s instructions tell you to do so. Firmware pages can change, so use the version currently shown on GoPro’s update page rather than relying on an old downloaded file.

Power on
Press the Power/Mode button once. To turn the camera off normally, hold that button for three seconds. A short press and a three-second hold have different results, so avoid holding it when you intend only to wake the camera. Give the camera a moment to finish starting before changing modes or pressing record.

Leave the default mode or choose a different one
For a conventional first video, use Video (16:9). You can change modes when your subject calls for a different shape or motion treatment; the choices are described in the next section. Mode selection is optional—the camera is ready to record once the update is complete and the camera is powered on. If you are simply testing that the camera works, do not add a specialized mode until you have captured and reviewed one ordinary clip.
-
Decide whether to use the built-in light
The Light Control button cycles through low, medium, high and off with successive presses. It can be used while the camera is off, but it draws from the same battery used for recording and therefore reduces recording time. Treat it as optional fill or scene illumination, not as a required setup step. For a daylight test, leave it off; for a nearby subject in shade, try low or medium before using high.
-
Start and stop recording
With the camera on, press Shutter to start video and press Shutter again to stop. If the camera is off, one press of Shutter starts QuikCapture video; pressing Shutter a second time stops the recording and turns the camera off. QuikCapture is useful when you want to begin filming without first pressing Power/Mode. Wait for the recording indicator or on-screen confirmation before moving the camera away from the scene, then press Shutter once more to end the take rather than holding the power button.

Confirm that the clip was captured
Swipe up from the bottom of the touch screen to view the last video or photo. This on-camera playback is the fastest confirmation that the file exists. Check that the clip opens, that its duration is more than zero, and that the beginning and end are present. For playback and editing options, open the clip in the Quik app. If the camera is busy finishing a file, wait until it returns to the capture screen before opening playback.
Choose the right first-recording mode
LIT HERO lists four capture modes. Pick the mode from the subject and the intended viewing shape rather than changing settings at random.
| Mode | Best starting use | Important details |
|---|---|---|
| Video (16:9) | Everyday clips intended for a phone or television | GoPro describes 16:9 as the conventional full-screen shape for phone and TV playback. |
| 4:3 Video | Point-of-view footage where a taller frame is useful | The 4:3 image is taller than 16:9, giving POV scenes a different framing. |
| Photo | Single still images | Use this when you want a photograph rather than a video file. |
| Slo-Mo (16:9) | Motion you plan to review at regular speed or slow motion | The manual lists 60/50 frames per second options. The available rate depends on whether the camera is set to 60 Hz NTSC or 50 Hz PAL format. |
NTSC and PAL frame-rate choice
The manual’s 60/50 references are regional formats, not a promise that every setting appears in every country. NTSC uses the 60 Hz family and PAL uses the 50 Hz family. If a menu presents both choices, use the format appropriate to your region and existing video workflow; changing the format changes which frame-rate options are offered. Keep the same format across a project when you want clips to edit together without unnecessary frame-rate conversion.
When 4:3 is preferable
Choose 4:3 when the extra vertical area helps keep a helmet, chest-mounted view or other point-of-view subject in frame. A taller frame can leave more room above and below a moving subject, but it may not fill a widescreen phone or television without cropping or adding side space. Choose 16:9 when you want the familiar wide rectangle with no additional reframing for a phone or TV.

Slo-Mo is a capture-mode decision, not an editing effect applied after an ordinary clip. Select it before pressing Shutter when you want the camera to record at the manual’s listed 60/50-fps options and then review that motion at normal speed or at 2× slow motion. Use ordinary Video for a talking clip or general test where normal motion is the priority.

Use the light without shortening your first session unnecessarily
The integrated light is available before or during setup, but it is not required to make a recording. Press Light Control repeatedly to move through low, medium, high and off. Start with it off for a daylight test; turn on low or medium when you need fill, and use high only when the scene calls for more illumination. Every light setting uses the integrated battery, so leaving it on reduces the time available for recording. If you are comparing clips, note the light level for each take so a shorter run time is not mistaken for a battery fault.
What the current firmware note means
The GoPro US update page snapshot dated April 14, 2026 lists LIT HERO v2.10.00. That page records the following changes:
- Sport POV was renamed SuperView.
- 1080p 120/100 16:9 Slo-Mo was added.
- 1440p 30/25 4:3 Video Battery Saver was added.
- 1080p 60/50 SuperView Battery Saver was added.
- Lower-power preview was enabled in selected modes.
- Open GoPro support was enabled.
- Bug fixes and other improvements were included.
This is a dated listing, not a guarantee that v2.10.00 remains the newest release. Check the current update page when you set up the camera and install the version GoPro offers for LIT HERO at that time. The renamed Sport POV/SuperView label and newly listed frame-rate options may make a current menu look different from an older tutorial, which is another reason to follow the update prompts before changing settings.
Check playback correctly: camera view versus Quik
The swipe-up playback check answers one question: did the camera create the clip? It does not show every processing effect that may appear later. GoPro says HyperSmooth stabilization is applied in the Quik app; playback on the LIT HERO screen does not display that stabilization. If the camera preview looks less smooth than expected, open the same file in Quik before judging the stabilized result.
Quik also provides additional playback and editing options. The camera’s own screen remains the quickest way to confirm that the last recording is present immediately after you stop. If you are checking audio or framing, use the full Quik view rather than judging details from the small camera display.
Optional mounting for the first recording
You can make the first clip handheld, so no mount is required. If you do mount the camera, LIT HERO supports folding fingers and 1/4-20 mounting threads. Its magnetic latch connection point is intended for a Magnetic Latch Mount sold separately. GoPro’s Starter Bundle page lists combinations that include accessories such as Shorty, Bite Mount + Extension Piece, Magnetic Swivel Clip, Floaty and Camera Case; bundle contents and availability can change. Choose a mount only after deciding where the camera will sit, and complete the card, charge, door and update steps before attaching it. Check that the chosen mount does not obstruct the Shutter, Light Control button, screen or door latch.
Troubleshoot the first setup
The camera will not save a recording
Power the camera off before touching the card. Reseat a brand-name microSD, microSDHC or microSDXC card with the label facing the front, and verify that it is rated A2 and V30 or higher. The manual’s card requirement is a prerequisite for saving video and photos; a card that lacks those ratings is not a suitable substitute. If the card meets the ratings but the problem remains, repeat the power-off insertion sequence and confirm the door is fully closed.
The camera asks for an update or will not proceed to use
Complete the required update through Quik on an internet-connected phone or through GoPro’s manual-update page after selecting LIT HERO. Keep the card installed throughout the process. Removing it during an update is specifically warned against because it may permanently damage the camera. Use the current LIT HERO listing rather than a file intended for another GoPro model.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The battery seems to run down quickly
Confirm that charging has finished—the status light turns off when it is done—and remember that the light shares the integrated battery with recording. Turn the light off for a baseline test, then enable only the brightness level you need. A first session that includes repeated setup, playback and update activity will not be comparable to a simple continuous recording, so test recording time after the camera is fully updated.
The camera starts recording when you press a button while it is off
That is QuikCapture behavior, not a fault. A Shutter press while the camera is off starts video immediately; a second press stops the clip and powers the camera off. Use Power/Mode first when you want to inspect settings before recording.
The door does not seem secure
Unplug the cable, close the door fully and engage the latch until it is locked and sealed. Do not record with the latch partly open. A secure door is part of the normal operating setup, not an optional weather precaution. If the cable is still attached, disconnect it before attempting to lock the door.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe clip looks less stabilized on the camera than in the app
Review it in Quik. GoPro applies HyperSmooth stabilization in the app, while the camera’s own playback does not show that processing.

Once the A2/V30-or-higher card is installed, the integrated battery is charged, the door is locked and the required update is complete, the essential control is simple: Shutter starts video and Shutter stops it. Use Video (16:9) as the uncomplicated first mode, add the light only when the scene needs it, and swipe up to verify the resulting file.
For a repeatable routine, power down before handling the card, charge until the status light goes out, lock the door, check the current GoPro update, then make a short test clip before starting the important take. That sequence confirms storage, power, software, controls and playback without relying on assumptions.

Does LIT HERO include a memory card?
The card is sold separately. GoPro specifies a brand-name microSD, microSDHC or microSDXC card rated Class A2 and V30 or higher, but does not specify a preferred brand or capacity.
Is a camera update required before recording?
Yes. GoPro’s LIT HERO manual states, “You must update your camera before you can use it.” Use Quik on an internet-connected phone or select LIT HERO on GoPro’s camera-update page and follow the manual-update instructions.
Can I remove the microSD card during an update?
No. Keep the card installed throughout the update. GoPro warns that removing it during the update may permanently damage the camera.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Which mode should I use for my first video?
Use Video (16:9) for a conventional clip intended for full-screen phone or TV playback. Choose 4:3 Video for taller point-of-view framing, or Slo-Mo (16:9) when you want the manual’s 60/50-fps motion options.
Does the LIT HERO light reduce recording time?
Yes. The light cycles through low, medium, high and off, and it uses the same integrated battery as recording. Leave it off for a daylight test and use only the brightness you need.
Why does my clip look less smooth on the camera screen?
GoPro says HyperSmooth stabilization is applied in the Quik app. The LIT HERO’s own playback does not display that stabilization, so review the clip in Quik before judging the stabilized result.
The Bottom Line
Install an A2/V30-or-higher microSD card with the camera off, charge it, lock the door, complete GoPro’s required update, and press Shutter to record. Press Shutter again to stop, then swipe up to confirm the clip. Video (16:9) is the simplest first mode; the light, alternate modes and mounts are optional choices.
