Google’s instruction that “the lost device gets a notification” means the phone selected in Find Hub is notified; it does not guarantee that the owner receives a separate alert when a location becomes available. If a live position cannot be found, Find Hub may show a stored last-known location, or it may show no location at all.
The result depends on the phone’s power, connectivity, settings, account state and whether the offline-finding network has detected it. The checks below explain what each Find Hub status means, how to repair a synchronization problem and when to involve your mobile provider.

What the notification actually means
Google’s lost-device procedure says, “The lost device gets a notification.” In context, that sentence refers to the Android phone you selected in Find Hub. It tells the handset that someone has initiated a lost-device action; it is not a promise that the person looking for the phone will receive a push notification containing a new location.

Those are different events: a notification delivered to the handset and a location result delivered to the owner’s Find Hub view. The official instructions do not establish that an owner always receives a separate alert when a phone later becomes locatable, nor do they specify a universal delivery delay.

Google does describe a notification after a lost accessory is detected by the Find Hub network. That wording applies to accessories, not to a guarantee about phones, so it should not be used to predict phone-alert behavior.
Read the Find Hub result correctly
Find Hub can present three practical outcomes. Treat them differently when deciding whether to keep searching, retry a sync or secure the account.
| Find Hub result | What it means | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Current location | Find Hub has a location it can report now, based on the device or a participating detection. | It does not guarantee that the phone will remain at that point or that a future alert will arrive. |
| Last known location | A previously stored location is available. Google says an offline device may appear at its last online location when offline finding is enabled and an encrypted stored location exists. | It is not proof that the phone is still there. Google does not give a universal age or accuracy threshold for this result. |
| No location available | Find Hub currently has no usable location to display. | It does not identify the exact cause, and it does not mean the handset can never be recovered. |
For the official wording and device requirements, see Google’s Find, secure, or erase a lost Android device guide.
Why a lost phone may have no current location
The handset is powered off or has no battery
A phone that is switched off or out of power cannot send a fresh position. Google lists a powered-off state and no power among the reasons a device location may be unavailable. A location shown from before shutdown can remain useful as a last-known position, but it is not a live reading.

There is no usable connection
Find Hub needs a path for location data to reach Google. The troubleshooting guidance lists no mobile-data or Wi-Fi connection, poor signal and a removed SIM as causes of an unavailable location. A phone inside a building, underground, in a remote area or behind damaged radio hardware may therefore stop updating even while it is physically intact.
Airplane mode and Wi-Fi being turned off are also listed conditions. These settings can prevent the handset from reaching the network needed for a current fix. If someone later reconnects the phone, Find Hub may update, but the documentation does not promise an owner alert at that moment.
The device is damaged
Physical damage can disable the battery, radios or other components involved in reporting location. Google includes damage in its list of reasons that a device cannot be located. If the phone was dropped in water or suffered a severe impact, assume that remote commands may remain pending until it can power and connect again.

How offline finding helps—and where it stops
Offline finding is a fallback, not continuous tracking. Google says Find Hub can use an encrypted, stored last-online location when the relevant setting is enabled. It also describes a crowdsourced network in which nearby participating Android devices can detect a lost device or item and help report a location.

Both mechanisms are conditional. A stored location exists only if one was captured and retained; it may be old and Google does not publish a universal freshness limit. A network detection requires another participating Android device to come near the lost handset and successfully relay the encrypted signal. The official guidance does not promise that every lost phone will be detected, how quickly a detection will occur or how accurate it will be.
Consequently, an offline-enabled phone can still show its last online point while offering no live movement. If no stored point exists and the network has not detected the device, Find Hub can legitimately remain at no location available.
Google’s preparation instructions, including the offline-finding setting, are in Be ready to find a lost Android device. Menu names and availability can vary by Android version, phone model and region.
What “Sync recent location” and “Can’t access location” mean
Sync recent location
Find Hub may display Sync recent location when the encrypted recent-location record is out of sync. This is a data-synchronization problem, separate from a phone simply being switched off.

- On the Android device you are using to view Find Hub, look for an Account action required notification.
- Open that notification and complete the instructions Google provides.
- Refresh the Find Hub device list.
- Try Sync recent location again.
These steps come from Google’s Fix issues with Find Hub guidance. They repair the account or encryption state on the device you can access; they cannot create a location that the missing phone never recorded.
Can’t access location
If the status is Can’t access location, Google instructs you to use the Android device whose Find Hub status shows the error:
- Open Settings.
- Open Google services, then Find Hub.
- Review Find your offline devices.
- Temporarily turn offline finding off.
- Select the previous offline-finding setting again to reinitialize it.
The exact switches can differ by Android release. Because these actions require access to a functioning Android device, they are most useful for repairing setup and future readiness. They may not recover a handset that is already inaccessible, powered down or damaged.
Check the phone’s remote-action prerequisites
Location viewing, securing and erasing are related but not identical operations. Google says that securing or erasing an Android device requires all of the following:
Best Value
- The phone has power.
- It has mobile data or Wi-Fi.
- A Google Account is signed in.
- Find Hub is turned on.
- The device is visible on Google Play.
If one of these conditions is missing, a remote action may not complete. A pending secure or erase command should not be interpreted as evidence that Find Hub will soon send a location alert. The handset must reconnect before Google can receive and act on the command.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
Use this order so that you distinguish a stale position, a synchronization fault and a genuinely unavailable device.
- Open Find Hub and identify the exact label. Check whether the map shows a current location, a last-known location, Sync recent location or Can’t access location. Do not describe a stale point as live.
- Refresh once after completing any account prompt. If Account action required appears on the viewing Android phone, finish that action, refresh the device list and retry the sync command.
- Repair offline-finding setup if the error persists. Follow the Settings path under Google services and Find Hub, then toggle Find your offline devices off and back to its previous setting, as Google documents.
- Evaluate the last-known point cautiously. Use it as the last available location, not as confirmation that the phone remains there. Consider when the phone was last known to be online, but do not apply an invented expiration period; Google does not publish one.
- Check the likely connectivity blockers. Consider whether the handset may be out of battery, powered off, in airplane mode, without Wi-Fi, outside mobile coverage, missing its SIM or physically damaged. These are documented causes of an unavailable location.
- Try again only when a reconnection is plausible. If the phone might be charging or returning to coverage, revisit Find Hub later. The service can update when the device or network detects it, but Google does not guarantee a separate owner alert.
When to contact the mobile provider
If the phone appears unrecoverable, Google recommends contacting your mobile provider, if possible, to deactivate the service. Have the handset’s IMEI available; the provider may need it to identify the device and process the deactivation.
Deactivation protects the mobile account, but it is not a location-recovery method. Before asking for it, record any last-known location shown by Find Hub and secure the device through the service when the prerequisites are met. Do not visit a map location alone if theft is suspected; involve local authorities instead.
Preventing a silent failure before the next loss
Preparation improves the chance that Find Hub has something useful to show, although it cannot guarantee a live fix or an alert.
- Keep a Google Account signed in on the phone and leave Find Hub enabled.
- Review Find your offline devices in Google services and choose the available setting that fits your privacy preference.
- Keep the phone charged and connected to mobile data or Wi-Fi during normal use.
- Know where to find the IMEI before an emergency; it may be required by the mobile provider.
- Periodically open Find Hub from another device so you recognize the difference between current and last-known locations and can spot an account-action prompt.
These measures increase readiness; they do not turn offline finding into guaranteed live tracking. Phone support, setting names and network participation can vary by Android version, model and region, so confirm the current controls on the handset you own.
The bottom line on missing alerts
A missing Find Hub alert is usually a limitation of what the service can currently know, not proof that the notification system is broken. The phone may be off, disconnected, damaged or improperly synchronized; offline finding may have only a stored point, or no nearby network detection may exist. First classify the status shown in Find Hub, repair any sync error, treat a last-known location as historical and secure or deactivate the phone when recovery is no longer realistic. Most importantly, do not read Google’s statement that the lost device gets a notification as a guarantee that the owner will receive a new-location alert.
