Yes, you can run Windows-only applications on an M5 Pro Mac, but Windows virtualization will not give the Mac an NVIDIA GPU. Install Windows 11 ARM in Parallels for ordinary Windows programs. Keep any application that requires NVIDIA CUDA on a separate Windows or Linux computer with a compatible NVIDIA GPU, or use a hosted GPU and connect to it from macOS. Treat the Mac as the Windows client and CUDA-control machine, not as the CUDA execution host.
The practical answer: split Windows compatibility from CUDA execution
An M5 Pro Mac uses Apple silicon and Apple’s integrated GPU architecture. It can host an ARM version of Windows, and that Windows installation can translate many traditional Intel Windows applications. That is a compatibility solution for the operating system and application layer. It is not a way to add NVIDIA hardware to the Mac.

Parallels states that Parallels Desktop is the only third-party virtualization solution currently authorized by Microsoft to run Windows 11 in a virtual environment on Apple silicon Macs.
Windows 11 ARM in Parallels is therefore the sensible first test for Office software, accounting packages, line-of-business utilities and other ordinary Windows applications.

CUDA is a different requirement. NVIDIA’s current CUDA installation guidance requires a CUDA-capable NVIDIA GPU, a supported Windows or Linux release, a supported Microsoft Visual Studio version where applicable, and the CUDA Toolkit. A virtual machine’s generic or paravirtualized graphics device does not satisfy that requirement, and the M5 Pro’s Apple GPU is not a CUDA device.

What Windows 11 ARM can and cannot do on an M5 Pro
What the ARM installation is for
Windows 11 ARM is compiled for ARM processors, while much of the existing Windows software library was built for x86 or x64 Intel-compatible processors. Windows can emulate many of those applications. For a user moving from an Intel Mac or a Windows PC, this often makes ordinary desktop software usable without finding an ARM-specific build.
Use this environment for applications whose important work happens in user mode: document editing, browser-based business tools, many accounting systems, inventory utilities and similar programs. Test the exact edition, plug-ins and add-ins you use rather than assuming that a product name guarantees compatibility.
Where emulation stops helping
Emulation does not automatically translate every component loaded by an application. Parallels documents failures involving incompatible drivers, kernel-mode components, certain graphics features and nested virtualization. Those are the reasons an application can open successfully while a device, plug-in or advanced feature fails.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match- Kernel-mode and x86 drivers: A driver that must run inside the Windows kernel is not equivalent to an ordinary emulated application. If the vendor has not supplied an ARM-compatible driver, the program may not install or may lose a critical feature.
- Specialized peripherals: USB instruments, security dongles, card readers and other devices depend on both Windows drivers and reliable USB hand-off from macOS to the virtual machine. A device may appear in the VM yet still fail its licensing or control software.
- Graphics-specific features: Programs that require a particular DirectX capability, unusual GPU instruction, low-level display path or vendor driver can behave differently from ordinary 2D applications.
- Nested virtualization: Software that expects to create another virtual machine, emulator or hypervisor may be blocked by the virtualization layers already in use.
These limitations are compatibility questions, not signs that the M5 Pro is defective. Ask the application vendor whether the exact release supports Windows 11 ARM and whether its drivers, dongles and plug-ins are ARM-compatible.

How to install and validate Windows 11 ARM in Parallels
Do not migrate every workload at once. Build a small, reversible test environment and record the result for each application.
- Inventory the Windows side before changing computers. List each executable, plug-in, add-in, driver, license server, service, hardware dongle and peripheral. Record which tasks are business-critical and which can be replaced or moved to another machine.
- Check the vendor’s architecture and driver statement. Look specifically for Windows 11 ARM support, not merely “Windows 11 support.” Confirm that the product’s licensing service, printer or scanner driver, USB device and plug-ins are included.
- Install Parallels Desktop on macOS. Use its Windows installation flow to create a Windows 11 virtual machine. Parallels’ Microsoft authorization applies to running Windows 11 in a virtual environment on Apple silicon; Windows activation and licensing still follow Microsoft’s terms for your edition.
- Complete Windows Update and install the application. Finish Windows updates first, then install one application and its required plug-ins. Keep the application’s installer and license details available in case you need to reproduce the test.
- Test the real workflow, not just launch. Open representative files, print, import and export data, connect to the license server, use each plug-in and exercise the features employees actually need. A program that starts is not necessarily a program that is production-ready.
- Attach peripherals one at a time. Pass through the required USB device, install its approved driver and test a complete transaction. Record whether macOS, Windows or Parallels claims the device and whether it remains connected after sleep and restart.
- Classify the result. Mark the workload as usable, usable with a documented workaround, or unsuitable. Move unsuitable workloads to a separate host instead of repeatedly changing VM settings without evidence.
Give the virtual machine enough memory and storage for the tested applications, but do not treat resource allocation as a cure for a missing driver or unsupported instruction set. More virtual CPU or RAM cannot turn an x86 kernel driver into an ARM driver.
Why CUDA does not run through a Windows VM on the M5 Pro
CUDA is tied to NVIDIA hardware
CUDA is NVIDIA’s software and runtime platform for executing supported workloads on NVIDIA GPUs. The toolkit, runtime libraries and application frameworks expect a compatible NVIDIA device and driver. NVIDIA’s current Windows installation documentation lists a CUDA-capable GPU, a supported Microsoft Windows version, a supported Microsoft Visual Studio version and the CUDA Toolkit among the prerequisites; its Linux path likewise assumes supported NVIDIA hardware and software.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →An M5 Pro contains an Apple GPU, not an NVIDIA CUDA GPU. Parallels can expose virtualized graphics functions to Windows, but that does not pass through an NVIDIA device that is not physically present. Installing the CUDA Toolkit inside Windows may therefore fail at device detection, or an application may install but report that no CUDA-capable device is available.

macOS CUDA support is not a current workaround
NVIDIA’s archived Mac guidance says: CUDA 10.2 is the last release to support macOS and future releases of CUDA may not support macOS.
That statement is about NVIDIA’s old macOS support path; it does not make CUDA 10.2 compatible with the Apple GPU in an M5 Pro. It also does not provide a supported route for current CUDA-dependent software.
UTM graphics settings are not CUDA support
UTM documents graphics-renderer choices and DirectX passthrough options for virtual machines. Those settings can affect how a Windows application draws its interface or uses supported graphics APIs, but they do not create an NVIDIA CUDA device. A successful DirectX test in UTM, Parallels or another VM should not be reported as CUDA compatibility.
Choose where the CUDA workload will run
Option 1: Keep a local Windows or Linux NVIDIA workstation
A local workstation is the most predictable choice for lengthy jobs, interactive GPU development and workflows that move large datasets. Install a supported Windows or Linux release, the matching NVIDIA driver and CUDA Toolkit on that machine. The M5 Pro can connect to it over the local network using Remote Desktop, SSH or the application’s supported client.
This arrangement keeps computation and data near the GPU. It also preserves local responsiveness when the network connection is unavailable. The trade-off is another computer to buy, patch, secure, back up and license.

Option 2: Use a remote hosted GPU
A hosted GPU instance supplies the NVIDIA hardware in a data center. The Mac runs the client, while the remote system runs the CUDA application, drivers and toolkit. This avoids purchasing a workstation and can make it easier to select a GPU class for a particular project.
Remote performance depends on the network. Interactive graphics, large source trees and repeated dataset transfers are more sensitive to latency and upload speed than a terminal session that submits a job and retrieves a result. Recurring charges, storage fees, instance availability, data residency and provider support are part of the decision.
Option 3: Use a hybrid split
Many migrations work best with both environments: Windows 11 ARM in Parallels for ordinary Windows administration and document work, and a local or hosted NVIDIA machine for CUDA. Keep the application interface and files that do not need CUDA on the Mac, and send only the code, models, inputs and outputs that must execute on the GPU.
| Factor | Local NVIDIA workstation | Remote hosted GPU |
|---|---|---|
| Latency | Lowest on the same local network | Depends on internet path and provider region |
| Upfront cost | Requires compatible hardware | Usually lower upfront cost, with recurring usage charges |
| Large datasets | Stay on local storage | May require upload, persistent remote storage or a secure transfer process |
| Maintenance | You manage hardware, drivers and updates | Provider manages infrastructure; you still manage the guest OS, toolkit and application |
| Offline operation | Possible after setup | Unavailable when the required network connection is down |
A migration workflow that avoids a CUDA dead end
- Separate applications by execution requirement. Put ordinary Windows programs in one list, software with drivers or specialized peripherals in a second, and CUDA-dependent applications in a third.
- Build the Windows VM first. Install Windows 11 ARM in Parallels, update it and validate the ordinary applications individually. Do not buy a new Windows ARM license or peripheral until the vendor confirms the required driver path.
- Identify hard blockers early. Flag x86 kernel drivers, unsupported security dongles, unusual graphics APIs, nested virtualization and any requirement for a native NVIDIA driver. These are reasons to retain or provision another host.
- Provision the NVIDIA host. Choose Windows or Linux according to the application vendor’s supported matrix. Verify the physical GPU model, driver branch, operating-system release, compiler or Visual Studio requirement and CUDA Toolkit version before moving project data.
- Install and verify CUDA on the host. Confirm that the NVIDIA driver sees the GPU and that a small vendor-supported CUDA sample or the application’s own device check can enumerate it. Run this check on the NVIDIA host, not in the Mac VM.
- Choose a connection method. Use Remote Desktop for a supported Windows graphical session, SSH for command-line work on Windows or Linux where configured, or the software vendor’s own remote client. Keep credentials, keys and multi-factor authentication under the organization’s normal security controls.
- Move only the needed data. Use an approved file share, version-control system, secure transfer tool or remote storage. Avoid keeping the only copy of project files inside a disposable VM or an ephemeral cloud instance.
- Test the end-to-end job. Compile or launch the real application, load representative inputs, confirm GPU utilization on the NVIDIA host and retrieve the expected output. Include licensing, logging, checkpoints and recovery from a disconnected client.
- Keep the old Intel/NVIDIA machine during acceptance. Do not erase it until licensing, performance, peripherals, data transfer and recovery have all passed the real workload. A retained fallback is especially important when a vendor’s ARM statement covers the main program but not an older plug-in.
Licensing, files and security when the Mac is only the client
Licensing
Windows activation, Parallels licensing, application subscriptions, floating license servers and CUDA-related commercial software are separate concerns. A Windows VM can be activated while an application still refuses to run because its license server expects a machine identifier, a USB dongle or a network route that the VM does not provide. Test license checkout from the exact VM and from the NVIDIA host before retiring the old computer.
Best Value
Data movement
CUDA jobs often read large models, images, video or scientific datasets. Repeatedly copying those files between the Mac and a remote GPU can become the slowest part of the workflow. Prefer persistent storage close to the NVIDIA host, use incremental synchronization where appropriate, and define which copy is authoritative. Check that file permissions, line endings, symbolic links and path conventions survive the transfer.
Security
Remote execution expands the number of systems that need updates and access controls. Use individual accounts, multi-factor authentication where available, least-privilege permissions, encrypted connections and a documented process for removing temporary files from hosted instances. Do not expose a remote desktop or SSH service directly to the public internet when an organization-approved VPN, private network or access gateway is available.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The Windows application will not install
- Check whether the installer includes an ARM-compatible build or relies on an x86 kernel driver.
- Ask the vendor whether Windows 11 ARM is supported for the exact release and plug-ins.
- Check for a hardware dongle, service or license component that the installer expects to find.
- If the blocker is a kernel driver or unsupported peripheral, stop tuning VM graphics settings and move the workload to a native Windows host.
The application launches but a feature is missing
- Test the feature that uses the peripheral, plug-in or advanced graphics path rather than relying on the successful launch.
- Confirm that Windows assigned the correct device and that the vendor’s ARM-compatible driver is installed.
- Check whether the feature depends on a graphics capability or nested virtualization path documented as unsupported by Parallels.
The CUDA application says no GPU is available
- Run the device check on the NVIDIA workstation or hosted instance, not inside the M5 Pro VM.
- Verify that the NVIDIA driver recognizes a CUDA-capable GPU and that the CUDA Toolkit and application versions are compatible.
- Do not interpret a DirectX or 3D acceleration result in Parallels or UTM as evidence of CUDA support.
The remote CUDA session is slow
- Determine whether the delay is GPU computation or network transfer by comparing a local file operation with a remote job that keeps its data on the host.
- Keep datasets and intermediate files near the GPU, and retrieve compressed results or checkpoints instead of repeatedly copying raw inputs.
- For interactive work, choose a closer host or a local workstation; for batch work, submit jobs asynchronously and reconnect to collect results.
A USB device disconnects from the VM
- Confirm that macOS is not claiming the device while Windows is trying to use it.
- Reconnect it after the VM resumes, reinstall the approved driver if necessary and test a complete operation.
- If the device requires an x86 kernel driver or timing-sensitive access, attach it directly to a native Windows host instead.
What to decide before you sell the old computer
- Every ordinary Windows application has completed a real workflow in Windows 11 ARM, including its plug-ins and printing or export path.
- Every required driver, dongle and peripheral has been tested after restart and sleep.
- Each CUDA application has a named Windows or Linux NVIDIA host with a confirmed compatible GPU, driver and toolkit.
- Remote access works with the organization’s authentication and security controls, including recovery after a dropped connection.
- Project files, licenses, datasets and backups have an agreed home and a tested transfer method.
- The old Intel/NVIDIA machine remains available until the new arrangement has passed the workload’s acceptance test.
The cleanest migration is therefore a two-part design: Parallels and Windows 11 ARM for compatible Windows software, plus a native or hosted NVIDIA system for CUDA. The M5 Pro remains the daily Mac and control point, while the CUDA host supplies the hardware that CUDA actually requires.
