For a straightforward visual regression check in GitHub Actions, use Playwright Test’s built-in toHaveScreenshot() assertion. It creates a reference screenshot on its first run, then compares later captures against that baseline. Commit reviewed reference images with your tests, run CI in a consistent browser environment, and treat visual checks as a complement to—not a replacement for—functional tests.
Build a Playwright screenshot check
Choose a representative page or UI state and navigate to a predictable test site. Playwright’s screenshot assertion captures the page and checks it against a stored reference image. The first run creates the reference; subsequent runs compare against it. See Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation.

For example, add a test like this to a Playwright Test project:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page visual appearance', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('http://127.0.0.1:3000');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home-page.png');
});
Start the site in the test environment before the test runs, and ensure the route and its data are stable. Use additional tests for other important pages or UI states rather than relying on one screenshot to cover the whole site. A screenshot comparison detects visual differences; it does not establish that buttons, links, or other behavior work correctly.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Create and update reference screenshots deliberately
On the first execution, Playwright writes the expected image into the test snapshot directory. Inspect that image before accepting it, then commit it alongside the test so CI can compare future captures against the same reference.

npx playwright test --update-snapshots
Review the changed images and commit the updated snapshots with the code change. Avoid updating references automatically in ordinary CI runs: that would replace the expected output instead of flagging a change for review. Playwright documents the update option and its screenshot comparison settings in its visual comparisons guide.

A GitHub Actions workflow needs to check out the repository, set up the runtime, install the project’s dependencies and run its Playwright test command. Adjust the Node version, test script and server startup to match your project. The workflow must start the application or point tests at a deployed test environment before running screenshot assertions. Playwright’s continuous integration documentation covers CI setup; use it to align installation and execution with your project’s configuration.
Keep screenshot rendering stable
Screenshot comparisons are sensitive to rendering differences. Playwright notes that output can vary with the host operating system, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, headless mode and other factors; see its visual comparison guidance. Generate and compare baselines in the same operating-system and browser environment where possible. A consistent CI runner or container configuration helps reduce avoidable variation.

- CURVED FOR ENHANCED ENGAGEMENT: An immersive viewing experience with a curved monitor that wraps more closely around your field of vision; It creates a wider view, enhancing depth perception and minimizing peripheral distraction
- SMOOTH PERFORMANCE FOR SEAMLESS CONTENT: Stay in the action when playing games, watching videos, or working on creative projects; The 100Hz refresh rate reduces lag and motion blur so you don't miss a thing in fast-paced moments¹
- MORE GAMING POWER: Gain the edge with optimizable game settings; Color and image contrast can be adjusted to see scenes more vividly and spot enemies hiding in the dark; Game Mode adjusts any game to fill the screen so you can view every detail²
- KEEP IT EASY ON THE EYES: Care for your eyes and stay comfortable, even during long sessions; Advanced eye comfort technology certified by TÜV reduces eye strain by minimizing blue light and reducing irritating screen flicker²
- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
- Keep the browser version and test dependencies consistent between baseline generation and CI.
- Make page content deterministic where feasible: control test data and avoid capturing transient states such as loading indicators.
- Use predictable viewport and device settings for the test rather than relying on incidental local defaults.
- Investigate intermittent differences before increasing tolerance; rendering drift and genuine UI changes can both cause a mismatch.
Configure comparison tolerance carefully
Playwright provides options including threshold and maxDiffPixels to control acceptable pixel differences. The appropriate values depend on the page and rendering conditions; review actual diffs before changing them. A broader tolerance can let harmless rendering variation pass, but it can also conceal a meaningful visual regression. Tolerance does not make an unstable test environment stable.

Troubleshoot common failures
- CI reports a screenshot mismatch immediately: compare the actual image with the committed reference. Confirm that the intended baseline is checked in and that CI uses the expected browser and rendering configuration. Update snapshots only after reviewing an intentional change.
- A test fails intermittently: look for unstable page content, incomplete loading, or differences in browser and runner conditions. Stabilize the test inputs and capture point before adjusting tolerance.
- The first run creates an unexpected reference: check that the test reached the intended URL and UI state and that the application was ready to render. Review the generated image before committing it.
- CI cannot find or install the browser: ensure the workflow installs the Playwright browser binaries and required system dependencies for its runner; the CI installation steps may differ by project and environment.
- An intentional redesign causes many failures: regenerate snapshots with
npx playwright test --update-snapshots, inspect the resulting changes, and commit the reviewed references together with the design update.

If you need an image capture rather than a committed Playwright visual assertion, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request returns an image or PDF. For example, save a screenshot from cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners and consent notices, newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
