How to Monitor a Website with Screenshot Checks from Multiple Locations

Run the same browser check on a schedule from locations that reflect your users, assert that the page or journey works, and save screenshots and other diagnostics when it fails. A screenshot is useful evidence, but it is not a health check by itself: pair it with an assertion such as “the main heading is visible” or “checkout reaches its confirmation state.”

What a multi-location screenshot check should tell you

A regional screenshot monitor helps answer two questions: did the important page state load, and did it look as expected from this location? Make the first question an explicit browser assertion; use the screenshot to investigate the result or detect visual changes. Playwright supports screenshot-based visual comparison with toHaveScreenshot(). Hosted browser-monitoring products describe scheduled checks across locations and diagnostic artifacts, including screenshots and traces.

  • Choose a meaningful target: monitor one high-value page or a short journey, such as a landing page heading, sign-in success, or checkout confirmation.
  • Check behavior as well as appearance: verify a visible element, URL, or success state, not just that an image was produced.
  • Run the same check in useful regions: inspect each location’s result; an aggregate green status can conceal a regional failure.
  • Keep evidence: retain screenshots and, where available, traces, video, console logs, network requests, and performance details.

Checkly describes scheduled global checks and artifacts such as screenshots, video, traces, console logs, and network requests. Datadog documents periodic browser tests from managed or private locations and results by location. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent evaluations. Build a self-managed check with Playwright

This example uses Playwright Test to visit a page, assert that its main heading is visible, and compare a screenshot with an approved baseline. Replace the URL and heading with a stable, important state on your site.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('homepage renders its primary heading', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
  await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Example Domain' })).toBeVisible();
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage.png', { fullPage: true });
});

Run it with Playwright Test in a controlled environment and approve the initial screenshot baseline deliberately. The Playwright visual-comparisons documentation explains screenshot assertions and baseline comparisons. This example does not itself schedule runs, provision remote regions, store artifacts long-term, or route alerts; those are additional responsibilities in a self-managed setup.

Make the assertion fit the risk

For a simple page, assert a heading or other key element. For a user journey, make the test perform the essential steps and assert the final success state. Keep the check narrow enough that a failure points to an actionable problem. Authentication, test data, and any destructive actions should be handled with dedicated test accounts and safe fixtures.

Keep visual comparisons stable

Use the same browser, browser version, operating system, viewport, and runner configuration when generating and comparing baselines. Playwright warns that rendering can vary with host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Uncontrolled changes can create diffs that do not represent a user-visible regression. Review baseline updates rather than automatically accepting every changed image.

Run the check from multiple locations

  1. Select locations that match real users. Include the regions where availability or rendering matters; add a private location if a check must reach an internal network.
  2. Use identical test logic and browser settings. Keep the page, assertions, viewport, and browser consistent so that location is the main variable you are comparing.
  3. Schedule a cadence appropriate to the risk. There is no universally correct interval or alert threshold. Choose them based on the consequence of an outage, expected change frequency, and the noise level of the check.
  4. Review each region separately. Note whether one location failed, several locations failed, or the assertion passed while the screenshot changed.
  5. Route actionable failures to the right people. Ensure the alert includes the location and links to the screenshot and available diagnostics.

Datadog documents periodic browser tests using managed and private locations; Checkly describes scheduled Playwright monitoring across global locations. Their feature descriptions can change, so confirm current support and configuration in the respective product documentation: Datadog and Checkly.

Investigate a failed or changed screenshot

  1. Start with the assertion. Identify whether navigation failed, the expected element was absent, or the final journey state was not reached.
  2. Open the screenshot for the failing location. Look for a blank page, error message, incomplete rendering, regional content difference, or a genuine design change.
  3. Use additional artifacts. Inspect trace, video, console, and network evidence where the runner or service provides it. Datadog describes location-specific results and performance details; Checkly describes browser-test diagnostic artifacts.
  4. Compare other locations and recent runs. A single-region failure may indicate a regional route or dependency issue; widespread failure suggests a broader application or test problem. Treat these as investigative clues, not proof of cause.
  5. Update a baseline only after review. If the application intentionally changed, approve the new expected image under the same controlled runner setup.

Choose self-managed or hosted monitoring

Playwright Test provides screenshot comparisons, but a self-managed deployment also needs scheduling, execution from the required locations, artifact retention, and alert routing. The Playwright documentation cited here covers visual comparison; it does not establish a particular multi-region self-hosting architecture.

Hosted synthetic-monitoring products can reduce the operational work of scheduling and regional execution. Their exact location choices, private-location support, browsers, retention, alerts, and costs differ; check current product documentation rather than assuming feature parity.

Decision factor Questions to answer
Location coverage Do available locations represent your users and the routes you need to test?
Private network Can the check run from a private location if the target is not publicly reachable?
Browser and viewport Can you keep the rendering environment stable and cover the devices that matter?
Test reuse Can your existing Playwright checks run with the service or runner you choose?
Failure diagnostics Which screenshots, traces, videos, logs, network requests, and performance details are retained?
Operations Who owns scheduling, alert routing, artifact storage, and runner maintenance?
Cost Compare current plans and expected check volume directly; pricing is not established by the product pages cited here.

Troubleshooting common problems

The screenshot changes on every run

Dynamic timestamps, rotating content, animations, and inconsistent rendering environments can create diffs. Stabilize browser and runner settings, use predictable test data, and limit the capture to the relevant page or element where appropriate. Review Playwright’s guidance on rendering variability before changing a baseline.

The test passes but the page is broken for users

The assertion may be too weak. A visible heading does not prove that a sign-in or purchase flow works. Add checks for the consequential user action and its final success state.

One location fails while others pass

Keep the location-specific screenshot and diagnostics. Check whether the issue is reproducible there, whether a regional dependency or route is implicated, and whether the test environment differs. Do not dismiss the result solely because an aggregate monitor reports success.

The check is noisy or alerts too often

Confirm the assertion targets a stable, meaningful state, then adjust cadence and failure thresholds to the impact and reliability of the signal. No single schedule or threshold fits every site.

The monitor cannot reach an internal page

Use a runner or hosted monitoring option that supports execution within the required private network. Datadog documents private locations; verify the current setup and access requirements in its browser testing documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a screenshot alone prove the website is healthy?

No. Pair the image with an assertion about the page or user journey that matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Playwright itself schedule checks from several regions?

Playwright provides screenshot comparisons, but a self-managed setup must arrange scheduling, regional execution, artifact storage, and alert routing separately.

Why can identical pages produce different screenshot diffs?

Rendering may vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode; dynamic page content can also change between runs.
