Save a screenshot to a folder
For a folder inside the directory where your Node.js process is running:

Use an absolute path if the file must go to the same location regardless of where the program is launched. Puppeteer infers the image format from the filename extension. If the destination directory does not exist, create it before calling screenshot(). Node.js’s mkdir option { recursive: true } creates missing parent directories and does not fail just because the directory already exists. See the Node.js filesystem documentation.

This ES module example creates an absolute output directory based on the current working directory, navigates to a page, saves a full-page PNG, and closes the browser even if navigation or capture fails.

}path.resolve('screenshots') anchors the output folder to the process’s current working directory; path.join() builds the filename using the platform’s path separator. The example combines the documented Puppeteer and Node.js APIs; it is not a claim of execution or testing. In a CommonJS project, the filesystem import can instead be written const { mkdir } = require('node:fs/promises').

Choose the path and capture options
- Relative or absolute: use a relative path for a folder under the current working directory. Use an absolute path when the destination should not depend on the launch directory.
- Portable path construction: use Node’s
path.join()rather than manually inserting slash or backslash separators. - File extension: provide an extension such as
.pngor.jpeg; Puppeteer uses the extension to infer the output format. - Page extent:
fullPage: truecaptures the full page; the documented default isfalse. - Other capture controls:
clipselects a region, andomitBackgroundcan make the background transparent. These affect the capture, not its destination.
If you omit path, Puppeteer does not save the image to disk; the screenshot call returns image bytes instead. That can be useful if the next step is to upload or process the image in memory. The path and screenshot options are documented in Puppeteer’s API reference.

Troubleshoot common save problems
- The folder is missing: call
await mkdir(outputDir, { recursive: true })before taking the screenshot. - The file is in an unexpected location: a relative path is based on the process’s current working directory, which may differ from the script’s directory. Log
process.cwd()or construct an absolute path withpath.resolve(). - The output is not the format you expected: check the filename extension; Puppeteer infers the image format from it.
- No file appears: confirm that
pathis present and that the process can write to the destination. Withoutpath, the screenshot is returned as bytes rather than saved to disk.
