How to Run vMix for Live Video Production on AWS EC2

Running vMix on EC2 requires GPU-backed virtual-display support, the EC2-specific NVIDIA Grid driver, careful Windows display setup, and workload testing before production.

You can run vMix on AWS EC2, but the setup depends on a Windows instance with GPU-backed virtual-display support—not just a large CPU instance. Choose a compatible GPU configuration, install the EC2-specific NVIDIA Grid driver, make its display the active Windows display, and control the desktop without relying on Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). The cited vMix EC2 guide was last updated April 16, 2020, so verify current AWS instance, image, and driver support before building a production system.

What you need before launching an EC2 instance

Start with the production you intend to run. List your video and audio sources, target resolution and frame rate, graphics, recording requirements, streaming destinations, and where the operator will connect from. Those details determine the workload you need to validate; the available vMix guidance does not specify a current EC2 instance size for a particular production.

  • A Windows EC2 instance with directly attached graphics that supports virtual display output. vMix’s EC2 guide, last updated April 16, 2020, identifies G4 or higher as supporting the required technology; do not treat that dated family guidance as a guarantee about today’s AWS catalog.
  • The EC2-specific NVIDIA Grid driver. vMix warns that ordinary NVIDIA drivers will not work for this setup.
  • At least four allocated CPU cores, the minimum named in the same dated vMix guide. This is a baseline requirement, not evidence that a particular production will perform well.
  • A remote-control method other than RDP, such as VNC, TeamViewer, AnyDesk, or a cloud desktop login solution such as Teradici. Availability, licensing, and suitability depend on the chosen service.
  • A streaming destination and its current ingest requirements, including supported codecs and connection details.

The vMix guide names Windows Server 2019 x64 as its documented operating-system baseline. Because that advice is from 2020, confirm that the Windows image you plan to use is currently supported by both AWS and your vMix version.

Set up vMix on AWS EC2

  1. Choose the instance and Windows image. In the AWS EC2 console, launch a Windows instance with directly attached GPU graphics and virtual-display support. Confirm the current instance family, supported Windows image, and regional availability in AWS documentation before deployment. The G4-or-higher guidance in vMix’s EC2 article is dated and should be checked against the current catalog.
  2. Install the EC2 NVIDIA Grid driver. Use the driver path AWS currently documents for the selected instance. The vMix guide says Grid drivers are required and ordinary NVIDIA drivers will not work; its linked driver directions may have changed since that article was last updated.
  3. Set the GPU-backed display as primary. In Windows display settings, make the display connected to the graphics adapter the primary display. Disable other displays attached to Microsoft Basic Adapter or a similar virtual adapter if they interfere with the graphics-backed display.
  4. Verify graphics access in vMix. Start vMix and add an MP4 input. Confirm that its video is visible and plays. vMix identifies blank video in this check as a sign that the application cannot access the graphics card; resolve the display or driver configuration before building the production.
  5. Configure remote operation without RDP. Connect using a direct screen-capture or cloud desktop login method. Test the connection and control workflow during a representative production load, not only at an idle desktop.
  6. Set up the stream for its destination. In vMix, configure output encoding and destination details according to the receiving provider’s current ingest requirements. The current vMix streaming help recommends FFMPEG for most situations and lists H.264, AV1, or HEVC video with AAC audio. Select only a combination the destination accepts; the provider’s requirements and the actual vMix workload determine the appropriate final settings.
  7. Rehearse the complete production. Run the intended sources, graphics, recording, streaming outputs, remote-control connection, and network path together. Check for visible playback, stable operation, and output accepted by the destination before relying on the cloud instance for a live event.

vMix cautions in its EC2 documentation that shared cloud services do not guarantee performance and advises thoroughly testing the setup in advance. A successful launch or idle test alone does not establish that the instance will meet the demands of a particular production.

Keep the vMix and AWS managed-streaming architectures distinct

With vMix on EC2, you operate the Windows desktop and vMix production environment on the instance. AWS’s separate Live Streaming on AWS reference solution is a managed pipeline: MediaLive ingests and transcodes, MediaPackage packages outputs, and CloudFront delivers them. Its guide describes redundant source feeds and adaptive-bitrate output, but it is not a guide to installing vMix on EC2.

That AWS reference solution has its own regional support considerations for MediaLive, MediaPackage, and MediaConnect. AWS advises stopping resources created by that solution after an event to help avoid unnecessary charges; that advice applies to the managed solution and is not a specific EC2 vMix billing instruction. The sources cited here do not establish current EC2 hourly prices, a suitable instance size for your workload, or current service availability by region, so check AWS’s current information before budgeting or deployment.

Troubleshoot common setup failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
MP4 video appears blank in vMix vMix cannot access the graphics card, or Windows is using the wrong display adapter. Confirm the EC2 Grid driver is installed, set the GPU-backed display as primary, and disable conflicting basic-adapter displays. Repeat the MP4 test.
The GPU-backed display is missing or not active The selected instance, driver, or display configuration may not provide the required virtual-display support. Verify the current EC2 instance capabilities and driver instructions for the exact instance and Windows image. Do not assume the dated G4-or-higher guidance covers every current configuration.
Remote control is unreliable or unsuitable RDP is being used, or the chosen alternative has not been tested under production load. Use a direct screen-capture solution or cloud desktop login method, then test control while vMix is handling the planned sources and outputs.
The destination rejects the stream The selected codec, audio format, or other output settings do not match its ingest requirements. Check the destination’s current specifications and configure vMix accordingly. FFMPEG is vMix’s recommended default for most situations, not a guarantee of compatibility with every provider.
Production performance is inadequate The workload exceeds what the chosen shared cloud resources deliver, or a necessary part of the production was not included in testing. Rehearse with the full source, graphics, recording, streaming, remote-operation, and network workload. Reassess the instance and configuration based on observed results; the cited guidance does not give a universal size recommendation.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is specifically to keep uploaded video looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, rather than mix a live production in vMix, StreamNeo is a simpler alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not camera-based live production. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
