How to Stream a YouTube Live Loop with Subtitles from Prerecorded Files

A practical guide to looping prerecorded video on YouTube Live with captions: broadcast setup, encoder settings, HTTP POST or embedded captions, testing and fixes.

To stream a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live loop with subtitles, create a broadcast in YouTube Studio and use an encoder to send the video to YouTube’s server URL with the stream key. You also need a live-caption workflow: YouTube documents captions sent by HTTP POST to a caption-ingestion URL or captions embedded in the video as EIA-608 and/or CEA-708. A subtitle file beside your video does not, by itself, establish that YouTube will show captions on the live broadcast.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube’s live-streaming tips say a channel must be verified and must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; check the current eligibility guidance because account policies can change.
  • A prerecorded video and an encoder that can play it and send a live feed to YouTube. Confirm in the encoder’s current documentation that it can repeat the file and support your intended caption-delivery method; YouTube’s documentation does not name an encoder that handles the complete loop-and-caption workflow.
  • A caption source and a way to deliver captions using one of YouTube’s documented live methods: HTTP POST or embedded EIA-608/CEA-708.
  • A reliable upload connection with enough capacity for the chosen video bitrate, plus time to test the entire file, its loop point, audio and captions.

You do not need expensive equipment just to get started: YouTube Help says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” The difficult part here is not buying hardware; it is making sure the encoder’s loop and caption output work together.

1. Create or schedule the YouTube Live broadcast

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
  2. Create a stream or schedule a broadcast in Live Control Room. Scheduling can give viewers a page to find and let you promote the event before it starts.
  3. Choose the encoder workflow and note the YouTube server URL and stream key shown for the stream.
  4. Keep the stream key private. It is the credential the encoder uses to send the feed to YouTube. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace it in the encoder before streaming again.

YouTube’s API distinguishes a live stream, which holds delivery settings, from a broadcast, which represents the event. That distinction is mainly useful when developers automate broadcasts; for this workflow, the Studio interface is the straightforward option.

2. Set up the prerecorded loop in your encoder

  1. Open an encoder that can read your local video and send a live output to YouTube.
  2. Enter the server URL and stream key from the YouTube stream setup.
  3. Select the prerecorded file as the program source and configure repeat or loop in the encoder. The exact control is encoder-specific; YouTube does not publish a universal loop command or guarantee that every encoder repeats files seamlessly.
  4. Set the output resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate as a matched configuration. YouTube recommends RTMPS for typical live content, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of two seconds (recommended, not more than four seconds), AAC or MP3 audio, and up to 60 fps. Use YouTube’s current encoder-settings table for a bitrate appropriate to your resolution, frame rate and codec rather than treating one bitrate as universal.
  5. Make sure the upload connection can sustain the selected output. Leave headroom for network variation and check YouTube’s stream-health messages during testing.

YouTube transcodes the incoming feed into formats for viewers, but that does not remove the need to send a stable feed with settings suited to your connection. The official settings and recommendations are listed on YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates page.

3. Choose how live captions will reach YouTube

YouTube’s LiveBroadcasts API documents two enabled caption-delivery modes. These are ways to deliver captions to a live event, not instructions for converting any subtitle sidecar file automatically.

Caption method How captions reach the broadcast What must support it
HTTP POST Captions are sent to the caption-ingestion URL associated with the livestream. The captioning or encoder workflow must send captions to that endpoint. The API reference passage does not name a sidecar subtitle format.
Embedded captions Captions are encoded into the outgoing video stream as EIA-608 and/or CEA-708. The encoder and output chain must embed a supported caption format in the video stream.

The API also defines a disabled-caption setting. If your file has SRT, VTT or another subtitle file, do not assume that selecting the video will make those subtitles live captions. Check the current documentation for your chosen encoder or caption workflow to determine whether it can convert or send those captions through one of YouTube’s documented methods.

Do not select ultra-low latency for a captioned stream: YouTube’s API reference says ultra-low latency does not support closed captions. Normal and low latency are the documented alternatives, but the documentation does not guarantee that every third-party caption setup will work under every remaining configuration. Verify your chosen method in a test broadcast. See the LiveBroadcasts API reference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Test the complete program before going live

  1. Start a test broadcast and start the encoder. Wait for the feed to appear in the Live Control Room preview before making the event public or clicking Go live on a scheduled broadcast.
  2. Test the actual prerecorded file, not a short substitute. Check that the video repeats as intended and that audio remains continuous across the loop boundary.
  3. Check caption timing near the beginning, during the file and around the loop point. Confirm that captions are readable and that the selected delivery method is active.
  4. Review YouTube’s preview, stream-health indicators and any messages. Check the stream’s audio and picture on the channel or watch page and, if possible, on a mobile device.
  5. Use footage and audio representative of the planned stream. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; checking the loop boundary and caption synchronization specifically is a practical extension of that guidance.

5. Start, monitor and end the stream

  1. Start sending the feed from the encoder and wait for the preview in Live Control Room.
  2. For a scheduled stream, select Go live after the preview appears. Monitor stream health, audio, picture and captions while it runs.
  3. When finished, end the stream in YouTube and stop sending content from the encoder, following the on-screen flow.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on automatic archiving for a stream that reaches or exceeds that duration; consult the current setup guidance for details.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
No preview appears The encoder is not sending to the right destination, or the stream key or server URL is incorrect. Compare both values with the stream details in YouTube Studio. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder.
Video plays once and stops The encoder is not configured to repeat the file, or its loop behavior differs from what you expected. Check that encoder’s current loop instructions, then test through the end of the file before going live.
Captions do not appear A subtitle sidecar file may not be reaching YouTube through an accepted live-caption method. Verify that the workflow sends HTTP POST captions to the livestream’s ingestion URL or embeds EIA-608/CEA-708 in the video output.
Captions drift out of sync The caption timing or conversion in the encoder/caption workflow may not match the outgoing program. Test the full file, including the loop point, and verify timing using the selected workflow’s documentation and preview.
Captions fail with ultra-low latency YouTube’s API reference says closed captions are not supported with ultra-low latency. Choose normal or low latency and test the caption path again.
Unstable picture or stream-health warnings The bitrate may exceed upload capacity, or the output configuration may not match YouTube’s recommendations. Check the current YouTube bitrate guidance for the chosen resolution, frame rate and codec; verify CBR, keyframe interval and network capacity.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules still apply

Sending a prerecorded program as a live feed does not change whether you have the rights to its video, music or other material. Use content you created, licensed or otherwise have permission to stream, and review YouTube’s current copyright rules and channel policies before scheduling a long-running broadcast. A technically valid live feed is not a guarantee that the content is permitted or that it will remain available.
