How to Run Two YouTube Live Streams from One FFmpeg Server Using Video Files

Use one FFmpeg input and tee to send an identical video-and-audio program to two YouTube Live events. Learn the setup, settings, limits and failure checks.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can send one video-and-audio program from a single FFmpeg process to two YouTube Live events by using FFmpeg’s tee muxer. First create both events in YouTube Live Control Room and collect the correct server URL and stream key for each. Tee duplicates the same encoded program to both destinations; it does not create two different shows.

How do I stream two YouTube Live streams from one server?

The basic arrangement is one media input, one video/audio mapping and encode, then two tee outputs. Prepare and verify both YouTube events before starting FFmpeg so each output uses the credentials for its intended event.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Create the first event: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy that event’s server URL and stream key from its stream settings.
  2. Create the second event: Create or schedule a separate stream and copy its own server URL and stream key. Keep the two destination pairs clearly labelled.
  3. Protect the keys: Treat stream keys like passwords. Do not publish them, commit them to a script repository, or expose them in logs or screenshots. YouTube’s encoder workflow requires entering the server URL and key in the encoder (YouTube Live encoder setup).
  4. Check concurrent activity: YouTube currently allows up to 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key, with both limits enforced at once. Two outputs are within those limits by themselves, but other active streams on the channel or either key can count toward them (YouTube simultaneous stream limits).
  5. Prepare and test FFmpeg: Confirm the installed build has the tee muxer and supports the options you plan to use. Run a trial with representative media, then check both event previews and stream-health indicators.

Can FFmpeg send one video to two YouTube stream keys?

Yes, if both events should carry identical audio and video. FFmpeg’s tee muxer writes the same data to multiple outputs and can encode audio and video once. The FFmpeg documentation describes it this way: “The tee muxer can be used to write the same data to several outputs, such as files or streams.” Because tee cannot automatically select streams, explicitly map the intended video and audio streams (FFmpeg tee muxer documentation).

Use separate input, mapping, filter or encode paths when the events need different content, start times, overlays, audio, resolutions or bitrates. A tee output is a fan-out of one program, not a way to make distinct programs. Conventional separate outputs can provide independent settings, but specifying an encode for each may require multiple encodes and more processing.

One encode with tee or separate encodes?

Approach What it does When it fits Trade-off
One encode, tee to two destinations Duplicates the same encoded audio/video to both event destinations. Both streams should be identical. One encode avoids duplicating encoding work, but both outputs share the same program and encoding settings.
Separate output paths/encodes Creates independently configured outputs, potentially from separate inputs or filters. The events need different content or output settings. Independent outputs can increase processing work, especially if each is encoded separately.

What FFmpeg command structure should I use?

There is no single safe, ready-to-paste command for every video file, FFmpeg build and YouTube event. The following is a schematic only: confirm the installed FFmpeg syntax and muxer options locally, substitute protected credentials, and test before going live. Do not put real keys in a published command or shell history.

ffmpeg [input options] -re -i "INPUT_FILE"
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0

  -f tee "[f=flv]rtmps://EVENT_1_SERVER/APP/KEY_1|[f=flv]rtmps://EVENT_2_SERVER/APP/KEY_2"

This illustrates the pieces, not validated syntax for every build or the exact endpoint format for every event. Use the RTMPS server URL shown in each event’s Live Control Room settings rather than relying on a remembered endpoint. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL, and documents how to reveal the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room (YouTube encoder settings and ingest URLs).

  • -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 is an example selecting the first video and first audio stream. Inspect the file first; a file may have a different stream layout or no audio.
  • The two tee destinations must be distinct and each must use the server URL and key belonging to its matching event. The example uses placeholders, not usable credentials.
  • Output options usually apply to the next output URL, while input options apply to the next input. FFmpeg notes that most options reset between files, so option placement matters; check the command-line documentation for the installed version (FFmpeg command-line documentation).

When can stream copy work?

Copying existing audio and video without re-encoding may work only when the file’s codecs, container-to-output compatibility, timestamps, audio layout and keyframe spacing suit the destination. Those properties vary by file, so do not assume copy mode is valid. If any requirement is unsuitable, encode to settings compatible with YouTube and verify the output in a trial.

How do I loop an MP4 on YouTube Live with FFmpeg?

Looping is a separate input-handling question from sending two outputs. The appropriate loop option and behavior depend on the installed FFmpeg build and the file; a loop boundary can expose timestamp discontinuities or audio gaps. Check the options documented by your build, test the exact file across a loop boundary, and confirm that audio and timestamps continue correctly before relying on a long-running stream. A command that works for one file is not a universal looping recipe.

Which YouTube encoder settings matter?

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); up to 60 frames per second; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. Its recommended bitrate varies with resolution, frame rate and codec, so choose the matching value from the current YouTube settings page rather than applying one bitrate to every stream (YouTube encoder settings).

  • Choose a resolution and frame rate the source supports and the server can encode reliably.
  • Use a bitrate the outgoing connection can sustain for both destinations, with headroom for network variation.
  • Use CBR and a keyframe interval aligned with YouTube’s current recommendation.
  • Test with representative motion and audio; a static test image may not reveal encoding or bandwidth problems.
  • Monitor each event’s stream health during the trial and after going live. YouTube’s guidance says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

How much bandwidth do two YouTube Live streams use?

With one encoded feed sent to two destinations, the server must upload that feed twice: total outgoing traffic is approximately the encoded feed bitrate multiplied by two, plus protocol overhead and normal network variation. With separately encoded outputs, calculate from the bitrate of each output and add them. These are planning relationships, not a YouTube minimum-bandwidth figure; the official guidance does not establish one universal bandwidth requirement for two FFmpeg streams.

Leave practical headroom rather than matching the sum exactly, and check sustained upload capacity from the machine that runs FFmpeg. Network paths, bitrate choice and server environment differ. There is likewise no universal CPU requirement: tee can avoid a second encode for identical outputs, while independent encodes require additional processing that depends on codec, resolution, frame rate and hardware.

What should I check if one or both streams fail?

  • One event is missing or shows the wrong program: Check each event’s preview and confirm the right key is paired with the right server URL. Ensure that both tee outputs point to their intended event.
  • YouTube rejects a connection or a stream will not start: Check for an accidentally reused key, an inactive or incorrect key, and other active streams that may have reached the channel or key limit.
  • Both outputs are unstable or drop frames: Check upload headroom for the combined outgoing feeds and look at YouTube’s stream-health warnings. Reduce output bitrate or quality if the connection cannot sustain the current settings.
  • FFmpeg reports a muxer or output-format error: Verify that the installed build includes tee support, that the output format is declared correctly for each destination, and that option placement matches the build’s syntax.
  • Video works but audio is absent: Inspect the input’s streams and adjust explicit mappings. The example’s first-audio mapping will not work for a file without an audio stream.
  • Copy mode fails, or playback stutters at a loop boundary: Check codec/container compatibility, timestamps, audio layout and keyframe spacing. Test a suitable encode path and separately verify the file’s loop behavior.
  • CPU use is high: Confirm whether the command is encoding once through tee or creating separate encode paths. Resolution, frame rate and codec affect processing load; no fixed server size is established for all deployments.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is simply to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running without leaving this FFmpeg server on, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative for uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded media from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
