Test with representative audio and motion, inspect the Live Control Room preview and health messages, and diagnose problems at the source, encoder or network before changing equipment. YouTube transcodes the incoming feed for viewers, so a stable, correctly configured stream matters more than simply choosing the highest settings.
Choose settings your connection and encoder can sustain
YouTube’s encoder recommendations depend on the video codec, resolution and frame rate. The values below are recommended ingest bitrates in Mbps from YouTube Help’s encoder settings guidance, current guidance accessed in 2026. Minimums are not a target for every situation: use a recommended value only when your encoder and sustained upload connection can support it.

| 2160p / 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |

| 720p / 30 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p / 30 fps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p / 30 fps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
These are encoder-to-YouTube ingest recommendations, not a promise that every viewer will receive a particular resolution or image quality. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats. Choose the best combination your actual connection can hold steadily rather than maximizing resolution or bitrate at the expense of interruptions.

Set the other encoder parameters
YouTube Help’s current guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS transport, with RTMPS recommended for encrypted transport; H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video; and frame rates up to 60 fps. Use constant bitrate (CBR), set a 2-second keyframe interval, and do not exceed 4 seconds. Use square pixels and progressive scan.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.
- The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.
- C270’s RightLight 2 feature adjusts to lighting conditions, producing brighter, contrasted images to help you look good in all your conference calls.
- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
- Audio: AAC or MP3. For stereo, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. For 5.1 audio, it lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps; 5.1 is supported only with AAC over RTMP/RTMPS.
- Color: Rec. 709 for SDR. YouTube’s listed guidance recommends H.265 for HDR; AV1 is not supported for HDR in that guidance.
- Codec choice: Match the bitrate row to the video codec actually selected in the encoder. Codec support and the processing load on your particular encoder also matter.
For the full current parameter guidance, see YouTube’s encoder settings page.
Calculate the upload speed you need
Measure outbound upload throughput, not download speed. A fast download result does not show that the streaming device can continuously send video at its target bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom and counting both primary and backup streams when applicable; its streaming tips also advise accounting for other people and devices sharing the connection.
- Run an upload speed test under conditions similar to the event: use the same network and, if possible, test when typical household or office devices are active.
- Add the video and audio send rates for every stream the connection must carry, including a backup feed if you are using one.
- Keep that combined bitrate below the available upload rate, with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. A speed-test result is a snapshot, so a fluctuating connection may still need a lower stream setting.
- If the connection cannot sustain the target reliably, reduce resolution, frame rate or bitrate and test again. Do not try to solve a weak connection by raising the encoder bitrate.
Run a representative test before going live
A test should resemble the actual event: include the planned audio and similar movement or visual detail. YouTube recommends preparing the event in advance, starting the encoder 15 minutes before the event, and setting up at least two hours beforehand. Follow its streaming tips for the current preparation guidance.

- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
- Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
- Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
- Configure the stream and encoder ahead of time, then send a test with representative motion and audio.
- Check the Live Control Room preview before starting the public event. Look for image softness, stuttering, missing audio and sync problems.
- Once live, monitor the stream health indicator and any messages in Live Control Room rather than assuming a successful encoder connection means the feed is healthy.
- Check that the local recording or archive is intact and continues to grow. It can help establish whether a defect exists before YouTube receives the feed.
- If using a backup encoder, test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection, then confirm the viewer player switches to the backup.
- Confirm that the stream is reachable from the channel or watch page and on mobile devices.
Fix blurry video, buffering and dropped frames
Picture is soft, blocky or unstable
- Verify encoder settings: Check resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate against YouTube’s table. A high bitrate cannot compensate for an upload connection that is too slow or fluctuating.
- Inspect the encoder and local recording: Look for encoder errors and high CPU load. Review the local archive to see whether the same defect appears before the feed reaches YouTube.
- Check the source: Inspect camera framing, focus, lighting and the quality of audio and video being sent to the encoder. YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking source quality.
- Test the outbound connection: If the encoder view and local archive look healthy, check the upload connection. YouTube advises contacting your ISP if connectivity tests indicate a connection problem.
Stream buffers or drops frames
Recheck sustained upload capacity, leave the recommended headroom, and account for other network users and any backup feed. If the connection is insufficient or unstable, lower resolution, frame rate or bitrate and run another test. These are applications of YouTube’s bandwidth guidance, not a guarantee that one adjustment will fix every cause of buffering or dropped frames.
Stream will not start
If you use a third-party encoder with a stream key, verify the key in Live Control Room and update it in the encoder if necessary. If you sign into YouTube through third-party streaming software instead of using a key, YouTube directs users to contact that software’s support team. See YouTube’s troubleshooting steps.
Viewers report trouble while your preview looks fine
Reports from many viewers on different internet connections can point to an issue with the live encoder. Check encoder diagnostics and Live Control Room health messages. YouTube transcodes the feed for different devices and network conditions, but that does not make every viewer’s playback conditions identical.

Choose latency with interaction and buffering in mind
Latency is the delay between capture by the camera or encoder and the video appearing to viewers. Lower latency can make interaction feel more immediate, but may increase playback buffering. If the event does not depend on real-time audience interaction, that tradeoff may not be worthwhile. YouTube says the 2160p (4K) option does not offer its low-latency setting; that stream is optimized for quality at normal latency. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance and its encoder settings guidance.

Check access, copyright and stream content
Quality settings cannot make a stream eligible to go live or resolve content-rights issues. YouTube’s getting started guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction during the preceding 90 days. Before a public broadcast, make sure you have rights to the audio and video you use and follow YouTube’s applicable live-stream and content policies. A successful technical test is not evidence that content is cleared for use.
