Canva can add a countdown timer to a design, help you customize a livestream countdown template, and edit a countdown video. The right method depends on what you need: a video asset to play before your stream, or a timer shown while presenting in Canva. Canva’s official information does not establish that its Countdown Timer app creates a live-updating browser source or overlay for OBS or other third-party streaming software.
Choose the kind of countdown you need

Add a Countdown Timer app to a Canva design
- Sign in to Canva and open a design, or create one for your countdown screen.
- Open Apps (the Apps Marketplace) and search for “Countdown Timer.” Select the app listing and open it in the editor. Canva describes the app as a way to “Add countdown timers to your designs effortlessly”; the listing identifies it as powered by TickCounter and free with any Canva plan. - Follow the setup prompts shown inside the editor. The app listing says it can read and change the contents of the design while it is open, so consider that access when deciding whether to use it with a particular design.
- Arrange the timer and surrounding design for the way viewers will see it. Keep the numerals legible at stream size, use contrast against the background, and leave important details clear of platform controls.
- Preview the result in the intended presentation or broadcast workflow before using it live.
Start from a livestream countdown template
- Browse Canva’s livestream templates and choose a countdown video or preview design. Examples in the collection include “Black Neon Light Livestream Countdown Timer Video” and “Red Black White Vintage Screen Countdown Timer Livestream Preview Video.”
- Open the design and adapt its colors, text, and branding to your channel. Check that the countdown and any stream-start information remain readable when the design is displayed at the size your viewers will see.
- If you need a video file, use Canva’s video editor to refine the asset with its timeline, text, overlays, or animation tools, then use the editor’s available sharing or export options. Canva’s editor features are described at Canva Video Editor.
- Check the timeline and preview the full countdown before exporting. A static design, or a date-based counter, does not necessarily become a timer that counts down continuously just because it is placed in a stream.
Use Canva’s presentation timer when presenting
If you are presenting directly from Canva, its Help Center documents a keyboard shortcut: while presenting, press a number key to add a timer for that many minutes—for example, 1 starts a one-minute timer and 2 starts a two-minute timer. This is a presentation-mode feature, not evidence of an exported countdown video or an overlay for third-party broadcasting software. What to know before using a Canva countdown in streaming software
Canva’s official app, template, editor, and presentation information describes timers in designs, video assets, and presentations. It does not confirm that the Countdown Timer app itself produces a continuously updating browser source that can be added to OBS or another third-party broadcast tool. Do not assume that the app can be connected as a live overlay; verify the specific workflow you plan to use.
For a prepared video asset, preview the exported file in your actual streaming setup before the event. Confirm that the countdown progresses as intended and that it ends at the right point. For a timer shown while presenting from Canva, test presentation mode instead.
