To add a chatbot to a YouTube Live stream, make the stream public and live, then connect a bot such as StreamElements or Nightbot and grant it moderator access as directed by the service. After it joins, configure commands, recurring messages, and spam controls. A bot supplements YouTube’s own moderation tools; it does not replace them.
Before you connect a bot
Both StreamElements and Nightbot require a public, currently live YouTube stream before the bot can join. This is a YouTube-specific requirement in their setup instructions. If your stream is private or unlisted, or has not started, complete the setup steps that do not require the bot first, then try joining once the public stream is live.

Set up commands, scheduled messages, and spam controls
Custom commands
A command gives viewers a repeatable response to a chat message. StreamElements’ command dashboard lets you set a command name and response, then activate it. Its advanced settings include aliases, cooldowns, loyalty-point costs, and conditions such as running only while the stream is live. You can also restrict commands by user level, which helps keep moderator actions away from ordinary viewers. Nightbot also provides command settings in its Control Panel.

- One-Touch Operation: change scenes, launch media, switch cameras, tweak lighting, adjust audio, post tweets – anything.
- Visual Feedback: know that your command has been executed.
Timers
Use a timer for a message you want the bot to post repeatedly, such as a channel link or a reminder. StreamElements lets you set the recurring message and an interval in minutes. Nightbot’s timers include an interval and a chat-line threshold, so you can account for how active chat is before a message is posted.
Spam filtering
StreamElements documents filters and banned words. Nightbot documents filters for capitalization, links, symbols, and a custom blacklist. Start with settings that address the spam you actually see; overly broad filters can also block legitimate viewer messages.
Which bot should you choose?
| What to compare | StreamElements | Nightbot |
|---|---|---|
| Connection workflow | Add the StreamElements channel as a moderator in YouTube Studio’s Community settings. | Click Join in the Nightbot dashboard, then follow its moderator instructions. |
| YouTube join requirement | Stream must be public and live; private and unlisted streams are not supported by its setup instructions. | Stream must be public and live; Nightbot cites YouTube API rate limits. |

| Spam controls | Filters and banned words. | Filters for capitalization, links, symbols, and a custom blacklist. |
Choose based on the connection workflow and controls you prefer. StreamElements’ YouTube setup article also says its bot name cannot be changed on YouTube, and that features tied to its loyalty system—including giveaways, stream store, viewer queue, and media requests—are not currently available for YouTube accounts. Feature availability can change; check the provider’s current documentation if one of these is essential to your setup.
Use YouTube’s moderation controls too
A chatbot is an additional moderation tool, not a substitute for YouTube’s native controls. YouTube lets creators add or manage moderators, set blocked words, hold potentially inappropriate messages with Basic or Strict moderation, and enable slow mode. During a live chat, available actions include deleting a message, timing out a user, or hiding a user. See YouTube’s live chat moderation help for the current controls.
