Three-point lighting uses a key light to illuminate your face, a fill to soften the key’s shadows, and a backlight to separate you from the background. For a streaming desk, start with one soft key placed in front of you and off to one side; add a reflector or wall bounce as fill, then add a controlled light behind you only if you need more separation. You do not need three powered lights.
What each light does
Key: the main light on your face
The key provides the main illumination and gives your face shape. Place it in front of you, slightly to one side of the camera. Adobe’s video guidance suggests about 45 degrees as a starting point, not a fixed rule. A larger, diffused source can create softer shadows than a small, hard source.

Fill: shadow control
The fill lifts the shadow side created by the key. It can be a second lamp, a reflector, or light bounced off a nearby wall. Use only as much as you need: too little may leave facial detail hard to see, while too much can flatten the image and reduce the key’s shaping effect. There is no universal key-to-fill ratio established for streaming; judge the result in your camera preview.
Backlight: separation from the background
A backlight sits behind you and adds a controlled edge of light around your head or shoulders, helping you stand apart from the background. It does not replace the key. Aim it so the beam does not spill into the camera lens, cause flare, or create a distracting bright outline.

Set up the lights in order
- Start with the key. Turn off competing room lights if they create unwanted mixed colors or shadows. Put the key in front of you and off to one side; about 45 degrees is a practical starting position. Adjust the light and camera exposure until your face has clear detail.
- Add fill only if the shadow needs it. Put a reflector or a second light on the opposite side of the camera, or bounce the key off a nearby wall. Increase the fill until the darker side of your face is readable, then stop before the image looks flat.
- Add a backlight if the background needs separation. Place it behind you, aim it toward your head or shoulders, and keep the fixture and direct beam out of the camera’s view. Lower or reposition it if you see flare or an overly bright edge.
- Match the light colors and set white balance. Elgato’s guidance gives 4000–5000 K as a neutral-office starting range and around 5600 K as a daylight-style reference. These are starting points, not universal settings: room light, walls, camera settings, and background all affect the result. Set the camera’s white balance after choosing the lighting you intend to use.
- Check the actual camera image. Review the shot at your intended exposure. Before buying a brighter light, try moving the existing one closer or changing its height, angle, or brightness. Placement and distance affect how much light reaches you.
Choose lights without overbuying
Begin with the lights you already have. A wall bounce or reflector can serve as fill, so the classic three-light arrangement does not require three fixtures. If you buy a light, choose for your desk and camera framing rather than the largest advertised output.
- Usable brightness at your working distance: a light has to reach your face from where it can actually be mounted.
- Source size and diffusion: consider how much of your face or upper body needs even coverage and how soft you want the shadows.
- Color-temperature control: adjustable color can help match the room or create a deliberate look.
- Mount and reach: check whether the light can sit at the needed height and angle without obstructing your desk or camera.
- Controls: choose controls that fit the way you adjust your setup.
Elgato’s current product-selection guidance, updated July 30, 2026, positions the Key Light Neo for close, compact or webcam setups, Key Light Air MK.2 for typical creator desks, and Key Light for setups needing more output, distance, or coverage. These are the manufacturer’s examples, not independent tests or universal recommendations. That guide lists maximum outputs of up to 1,000 lumens for Key Light Neo, 2,100 lumens for Key Light Air MK.2, and 2,800 lumens for Key Light; those specifications alone do not tell you how bright a light will look at your particular position.

Elgato’s current guide also lists a 2900–7000 K adjustment range for those three lights. Treat the listed range and the office and daylight references above as guidance, not a promise that one setting will suit every room or skin tone. Color-rendering measures such as CRI can help compare lights, but Elgato cautions against using CRI as the sole selection factor: placement, brightness, color temperature, and camera settings also affect the image.

Common problems and fixes
- The face looks flat: reduce the fill or move it farther away. Keep enough shadow to preserve shape.
- The shadow side is too dark: add a reflector, bounce light off a wall, or increase the fill slightly. Recheck the camera image rather than relying on how bright the room looks to your eyes.
- The backlight causes flare or a bright outline: lower it, change its angle, or reposition it so light does not reach the lens directly.
- Skin or the background looks unexpectedly warm or cool: check for mixed room and fixture lighting, match the lights as closely as practical, and reset camera white balance.
- The light seems too weak: move it closer or adjust its angle and height before assuming you need a higher-output model. Consider the actual working distance and coverage required.
Keep a separate prerecorded YouTube stream running
Lighting controls the camera image; it does not keep a prerecorded YouTube stream online.
