Use a browser automation script to capture the page, then use cron to run that script on a schedule. Cron does not set up Node.js, install the browser, choose when a page is ready, or decide where the image goes. Those details must work for the same operating-system user and environment that runs the scheduled job.
What you need before scheduling a screenshot
- A cron-capable machine that will be available when the job is due.
- A runtime and browser automation library installed for the account that will run the job.
- A capture script with a deliberate readiness condition and output path.
- A writable output directory and a way to inspect failures, such as a log file.
Playwright and Puppeteer both document browser screenshot capture. Choose based on the runtime and browser tooling your project already uses; the documented screenshot capabilities do not establish one as universally better. Keep the library and its browser installation in the same execution environment and user account. See the Playwright browser installation guide if using Playwright.

Write a website screenshot script
This Node.js example uses Playwright. Install Playwright and its browser in your project as described in the browser documentation, then adapt the URL and absolute output path. This is a template, not a command tested against your machine or target site.

Choose when the page is ready
The example waits for networkidle, but that is not a universal readiness rule. A site may render content client-side, load images after scrolling, require authentication, or keep network requests active. Select a condition that matches the page: for example, wait for a meaningful selector, use a considered delay, or use a suitable navigation condition. Test the result manually before scheduling.
Playwright’s screenshots guide covers page screenshots, including full-page capture. Its Page API documents screenshot settings such as output path, image type, scale, and a stylesheet string. A stylesheet can hide volatile elements or help make captures more repeatable.
Choose the capture area and output
- Viewport: capture the currently visible browser area when the goal is to monitor what a visitor sees without scrolling.
- Full page: set
fullPage: trueto capture the full scrollable page. Lazy-loaded content may need extra handling before capture. - One element: use a selector or element-specific screenshot method when only a component matters. Puppeteer documents both

Choose format, scale, and naming based on what will consume the file. If retaining every run, include a timestamp or date in the output filename and plan how old files will be removed; a fixed filename instead replaces the previous capture.

Test under the scheduled account
- Identify the operating-system user whose crontab will contain the job.
- Log in as that user, or otherwise run the script with that user’s permissions.
- Use the same Node.js executable and project dependencies that the cron command will use.
- Run the script manually and confirm the browser launches, the page loads as expected, and the output file appears.
- Confirm the output directory is writable and any required credentials or environment variables are available.
This check catches common differences between a terminal session and cron, including unavailable shell-profile variables, a different working directory, missing browser files, and permissions errors.
Schedule the script with cron
A per-user crontab entry has five time/date fields followed by a command in the Ubuntu Noble crontab(5) manual. This example runs daily at 06:30 according to the cron host’s schedule and time-zone rules:

Add the entry to the intended user’s crontab with crontab -e. Check that system’s manual because cron syntax and extensions can differ. The Ubuntu Noble crontab manual describes per-user crontabs, their time/date fields, and environment behavior.

Use explicit paths and environment
Cron supplies an execution environment rather than inheriting your interactive terminal session. Ubuntu’s manual describes variables including SHELL, HOME, and LOGNAME; defaults and extensions may differ on other cron implementations. Use absolute paths for the runtime, script, and output. If the script needs variables such as credentials, define them in the crontab or in a wrapper script with suitable access controls; do not assume a shell startup file is loaded.
Choose the schedule and time zone deliberately
The five fields represent minute, hour, day of month, month, and day of week. For example, 30 6 * * 1-5 is a common weekday schedule; verify the syntax on the host. Cron follows the configured schedule/time-zone rules, not necessarily UTC. The Ubuntu Noble manual notes that daylight-saving transitions can skip a scheduled nonexistent local time or run a repeated local time twice. For a job that must run at a particular UTC time, confirm how the host’s cron configuration handles time zones rather than assuming.
Make failures visible
The example appends both standard output and standard error to a log. Without redirection, cron may handle command output through its configured mail system, as described in the Ubuntu manual. Check your host’s mail setup if relying on it. Logs can grow indefinitely, so arrange log rotation or another retention policy appropriate to the machine.

Verify the recurring run
- Wait for the next scheduled time or use a temporary near-future schedule for validation.
- Check that the expected image exists and has a recent modification time.
- Read the log for navigation, browser-launch, permission, or missing-file errors.
- Remove any temporary test schedule and confirm the final crontab contains the intended cadence.
A successful manual run does not prove the scheduled run works: the cron environment and available permissions may differ. Keep the execution user, runtime path, browser installation, and output permissions aligned.
Make captures more reliable and comparable
- Match readiness to the site: wait for the content the screenshot is meant to show, especially on pages with client-side rendering or delayed images.
- Control changing content where practical: timestamps, rotating banners, animations, and personalized content can make successive images differ even when the layout has not changed.
- Keep the rendering environment consistent: Playwright cautions that browser rendering can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Use a consistent environment for image comparisons, but do not expect pixel-identical results across different machines or browsers.
- Plan storage: full-page images and timestamped output accumulate. Choose a retention approach that fits the capture frequency and review purpose.
- Consider host availability: a local computer cannot run a scheduled capture while it is off or unavailable. Use an always-on cron-capable environment if the schedule must continue independently of your workstation.
Troubleshoot cron screenshot failures
The script works in a terminal but not in cron
Likely cause: cron uses a different environment, user, or working directory. Fix: use absolute paths, specify required environment variables, and run the script manually as the crontab owner. Log stdout and stderr to see the actual failure.
No screenshot file appears
Likely causes: the job did not run, the destination directory is missing or unwritable, or the script failed before saving. Fix: inspect the cron host’s logs or configured mail, check the redirected log, and verify directory permissions and the output path under the scheduled account.

The browser fails to launch
Likely cause: the browser is missing from the environment or account used by cron. Fix: install the automation library’s required browser in that same environment and confirm the scheduled account can access it. For Playwright, follow its browser documentation.
The image is blank or missing page content
Likely cause: the capture happens before the relevant content is ready, or the page needs authentication or additional loading behavior. Fix: inspect the page’s loading pattern and wait for the intended content rather than applying one wait condition to every site.
Runs happen at an unexpected local time
Likely cause: the host’s time zone or daylight-saving behavior differs from your assumption. Fix: check the machine’s time-zone configuration and its cron manual; do not assume the schedule is UTC.
