How to Schedule Website Screenshots on a Raspberry Pi

Use a Raspberry Pi, a browser-automation script, and an operating-system scheduler to capture a website periodically. Learn what to validate for your OS and how to troubleshoot unattended runs.

You can schedule website screenshots on a Raspberry Pi by running a browser-automation script on a recurring schedule. The workflow has three parts: prepare a networked Pi, make a script that opens a page and saves an image, and configure the operating system to run that script. Raspberry Pi and Playwright document the headless setup and screenshot operations, but the sources cited here do not provide a current, tested cron recipe or a universal Playwright installation procedure for every Pi OS release and architecture. Treat the scheduler example below as a template to validate on your own system, not as a tested installation guide.

Choose a headless or graphical setup

For a monitor-free capture device

Raspberry Pi recommends Raspberry Pi OS Lite for headless use. Configure networking and remote access, such as SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect, through Raspberry Pi Imager so you can administer the device without a monitor. The Pi must be powered on and connected to the network when each capture is due.

For a desktop or kiosk

A graphical browser can help with interactive debugging or a display kiosk, but kiosk startup and recurring screenshots are different tasks. Raspberry Pi’s kiosk tutorial describes launching Chromium from the desktop autostart configuration; it does not give a scheduled screenshot recipe. Its Raspberry Pi 3-or-newer, 1 GB RAM threshold applies to the graphical kiosk tutorial, not to headless Playwright captures, so it should not be treated as a minimum requirement for this workflow.

Make a script that captures the page

Playwright’s Page API provides the core steps: launch a browser, create a page, navigate to a URL, save the screenshot, and close the browser. This Python example captures the visible viewport as a PNG. It assumes Playwright and its compatible browser runtime have already been installed for your selected Raspberry Pi OS release and architecture; verify that installation path for your system before relying on it.

from pathlib import Path
from playwright.async_api import async_playwright

URL = "https://example.com"
OUTPUT = Path("/home/pi/site-captures/latest.png")

async def main():
    OUTPUT.parent.mkdir(parents=True, exist_ok=True)
    async with async_playwright() as playwright:
        browser = await playwright.chromium.launch(headless=True)
        page = await browser.new_page()
        await page.goto(URL, wait_until="load", timeout=60000)
        await page.screenshot(path=str(OUTPUT), type="png")
        await browser.close()

asyncio.run(main())

Replace the example URL and output path. Use a directory the account running the scheduled job can write to. The load condition is only an example: sites with content that appears asynchronously may need a site-specific readiness condition, and no single wait strategy works for every page. Run the script manually and inspect the image before scheduling it.

Choose the capture and output

  • Viewport: the example records the currently visible browser area.
  • Full page: pass full_page=True to the screenshot call to include the scrollable page. A long page can produce an image much taller than a viewport capture.
  • Format: PNG is Playwright’s documented default; JPEG and WebP are also supported by selecting the screenshot type. Choose based on the fidelity and storage you need, and measure your own pages rather than assuming a particular format will always save space.
  • Path and scale: the screenshot API lets you select an output path and scale. Keep those settings constant if you intend to compare images over time.

Schedule the script to run repeatedly

Use the operating-system scheduler available on your chosen Raspberry Pi OS image. The sources cited here do not establish current, version-specific cron syntax or a tested Playwright installation for each Pi architecture, so validate both on the exact image before adopting a schedule. If you use cron, edit the crontab for the same account that successfully ran the script manually. A template line for an hourly run is:

This is an example of a schedule entry, not a verified Raspberry Pi OS setup command. Replace every path with the actual absolute path on your device, confirm the scheduler’s local-time behavior, and test the entry under the scheduled account. Redirecting output to a log gives you a place to look when a run fails; rotate or otherwise manage the log if it grows over time. Set the capture interval to suit the site’s update pattern and your storage budget.

  1. Run the script from the command line as the intended account and confirm that the output file appears and opens.
  2. Add a schedule entry with absolute paths and a deliberate output location.
  3. Wait for a scheduled run, then inspect both the new image and the log for errors.
  4. Check that the Pi remains powered, networked, and has enough free storage for the images you retain.

Keep captures useful and repeatable

Dynamic page content can change between runs, even when the script does not. A page may also render differently after changes to the host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, or headless mode. Playwright’s visual-comparison guidance recommends controlling the environment for consistent comparisons. For an archive, record the browser/runtime version alongside the images and avoid changing the capture configuration without noting it.

If a page is incomplete, choose a readiness condition appropriate to that site and test it through repeated manual captures. An arbitrary fixed sleep is not a universal fix: pages can load at different speeds, and the cited API documentation does not establish one page-ready strategy for every site. Full-page captures can also be unusually tall, so consider whether a viewport image better fits your retention needs.

Troubleshoot scheduled captures

  • The script works manually but not on schedule: the scheduler may use a different working directory, environment, or account. Use absolute paths and verify the job under the intended account.
  • No image is created: inspect the log, confirm the output directory exists or is creatable, and check that the scheduled account can write there.
  • The browser will not launch: check that the Playwright browser runtime is installed and compatible with the selected OS image and architecture. The cited sources do not establish a single installation procedure that applies to every Pi setup.
  • The screenshot is blank or incomplete: confirm the Pi has network access at capture time, inspect the page manually, and revise the page-specific readiness condition. Repeat captures to distinguish timing issues from content that is consistently unavailable.
  • Images vary unexpectedly: keep the operating system, browser/runtime version, settings, hardware, power conditions, and headless mode as stable as practical; note changes that could affect rendering.
  • Storage fills up: estimate retention from your own output files and schedule, then delete or archive older captures according to your needs. No universal image size is established here.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single request can return an image or PDF, without installing a browser on the Pi. Its capture flow accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets by default; each of those steps can be disabled. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server exposes screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

For a Raspberry Pi script, make an HTTP request to the API and save its response. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details.
