An AI governance platform can make risk assessments repeatable by keeping system inventories, context, evidence, reviews, decisions, and monitoring in one workflow. It cannot decide on your organization’s behalf whether a system is acceptable or whether legal requirements apply. Use the NIST AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF) to structure the work, keep accountable people responsible for judgments, and treat any platform-generated tier as an input—not a binding legal determination.
What an AI risk assessment needs to establish
A useful assessment is more than a score or a completed questionnaire. It should make clear what the system does, where and how it is used, who may be affected, what harms and trustworthiness concerns are relevant, what evidence supports the assessment, and who owns decisions and follow-up.

That record should evolve with the system. A change in model, data, use case, deployment context, or affected population can change the risks and should prompt review. The platform’s role is to help organize this work across systems and lifecycle stages; accountable staff still determine whether evidence is sufficient and what action is justified.

The NIST AI RMF 1.0 is voluntary, use-case-agnostic guidance. NIST says the framework is being revised, so check its official AI RMF page for the current version and profiles before relying on it. The NIST AI RMF Playbook offers suggested actions, which organizations can adapt to their own context.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The framework is organized around four functions: Govern, Map, Measure, and Manage. They are not a required sequence of steps. Govern is cross-cutting: governance decisions, roles, policies, and accountability inform work across the other functions. A practical assessment may move among the functions as new information emerges.
- Govern: establish decision rights, accountability, policies, risk tolerance, and escalation.
- Map: understand the system, its intended purpose, its deployment context, and who may be affected.
- Measure: identify and evaluate risks using evidence appropriate to the use case.
- Manage: prioritize findings, choose responses, and monitor risks over time.
Run the assessment in a platform-supported workflow
1. Set ownership and scope
Name an assessment owner and the people who must review or approve the work. Define the organization’s risk tolerance, escalation route, and the systems and lifecycle stages in scope. Keep decision rights visible in the platform record: a workflow can route a decision, but it cannot make the organization accountable for it.
Decide what counts as an AI system for your inventory and how teams will register new or changed systems. Include systems built internally and, where relevant, those provided by third parties or embedded in products and services.

2. Map the system and its context
Capture enough detail to interpret the assessment rather than merely identify a model. Adapt fields to the system and organization; a useful record may include:
- Use case and intended purpose, including uses that are out of scope.
- Users, people or groups potentially affected, and the deployment setting.
- Relevant provider and deployer roles, where applicable.
- Model, data, and other material dependencies.
- Lifecycle stage, system owner, and material changes since the last assessment.
NIST’s Map function emphasizes understanding context. The exact fields are not universal: an assessment should reflect the system’s real use, not just the platform’s default form.
3. Identify and measure relevant risks
Consider potential impacts on individuals, organizations, society, and the environment. Then determine which trustworthiness concerns matter for this use case. NIST’s AI RMF addresses concerns including validity and reliability, safety, security and resilience, accountability and transparency, explainability, privacy, and fairness.

Decide what evidence is suitable: for example, tests, technical documentation, operational records, or review by relevant experts. The method and evidence should fit the potential impact and context. A generic score can help sort or route work, but it does not capture every impact or establish that a system is safe, fair, or compliant.

4. Decide how to treat findings
Prioritize findings, record the rationale, and assign owners and due dates for responses. Possible actions include mitigation, further investigation, escalation, or a decision to proceed with documented residual risk. Record who accepts a decision and what evidence informed it.
A platform may connect findings to controls, route reviews, and preserve sign-offs. Humans must decide whether the evidence is adequate, whether the proposed response is proportionate, and whether residual risk is acceptable under the organization’s policies and applicable requirements.

5. Monitor and reassess
Set review triggers for material changes to a model, data source, use case, deployment context, or affected population. Where appropriate, connect ongoing monitoring and incident feedback to the assessment record, so new evidence can lead to review rather than remaining isolated in another process.
Do not treat a completed assessment as a permanent approval. NIST frames AI risk management as continuous across the AI lifecycle; the organization should determine how monitoring, incidents, and changes lead to reassessment.

| Comparison area | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Framework and regulatory coverage | Which frameworks, regulations, and templates are supported; how mappings are maintained; and whether your teams can adapt them. |
| Inventory and context | Whether the inventory captures use, purpose, affected people, dependencies, deployment context, ownership, and lifecycle changes—not only model names. |
| Risk taxonomy and tiering | Whether categories and tiers are explainable, configurable, and supported by recorded rationale. Confirm that a tier is not represented as a binding legal classification. |
| Workflow and decision ownership | Whether reviews, escalations, approvals, due dates, and decision owners can be configured to match your governance process. |
| Evidence and decision history | Whether teams can attach evidence, preserve rationale and sign-offs, and export records in a usable, portable form. |
| Integrations | Whether the platform connects with the model, data, security, and governance, risk, and compliance systems your organization actually uses. |
| Monitoring and reassessment | Whether changes or incidents can trigger review, and what ongoing monitoring the product supports for your use cases. |
| Deployment and plan constraints | How data is handled, what deployment options are available, and which integrations or features require particular plans or are limited by availability. |
Ask vendors to demonstrate a representative assessment using your own workflow and evidence requirements. Verify integrations, plan eligibility, and availability directly. Product materials describe vendor-stated capabilities, not independent test results or a ranking.
For examples of the kinds of claims to examine, IBM describes inventory visibility, risk management, policy and evidence functions, and continuous monitoring for watsonx.governance. Microsoft documents AI regulation templates in Purview Compliance Manager. OneTrust describes templates, risk tiering, lifecycle workflows, and evidence generation for AI Governance. These descriptions are starting points for verification, not proof that a feature meets a particular organization’s needs.
Keep legal classification separate from platform tiers
A platform’s risk score or tier is not a substitute for applying the law. For an EU-related assessment, the high-risk classification question depends on the applicable legal criteria and the system’s intended purpose. The European Commission’s guidance provides classification information and practical examples; consult current official guidance because implementation details can change.
