A trie stores strings as paths of shared prefixes. To autocomplete a prefix, follow its path from the root, then collect complete keys beneath that node. The basic approach takes time proportional to the prefix length to reach that point, plus the work required to find and return suggestions.

How a trie represents stored strings

A trie (also called a prefix tree) is a tree whose edges represent successive characters or other sequence elements. The root represents the empty prefix. Each path from the root spells a string, and a terminal marker identifies whether that string is stored as a complete key. PyTrie describes a trie as a structure for mapping keys that are sequences, usually strings over an alphabet (PyTrie documentation).

The terminal marker matters because one key can be the prefix of another. If both car and card are stored, the node for car is terminal and also has a child for d. A node’s children alone do not tell you whether its path is a stored key.

What operations cost

Let L be the length of the key or prefix being processed. If looking up a child takes constant time—or expected constant time when children are stored in a hash map—then insertion and exact search take O(L) traversal steps. Checking whether a prefix exists follows the same path but does not require the final node to be terminal. These are algorithmic bounds, not benchmark results.

Deletion also takes O(L) to reach the key’s node. After confirming the key is stored, unmark it as terminal. Prune nodes on the way back only when they are no longer terminal and have no children; otherwise, another key may depend on that shared path.

How to implement autocomplete(prefix, k)

  1. Start at the root and follow each character in the requested prefix.
  2. If any required child is missing, return an empty suggestion list.
  3. From the prefix node, traverse its descendants and collect paths whose nodes are terminal.
  4. Stop after collecting k results only if the traversal order is an acceptable result order. Otherwise, visit children in the required order or collect and sort results.
  5. If suggestions are ranked, apply a defined score and deterministic tie-break rule.

The prefix walk is only part of the query cost. Traversing descendants and emitting completions adds work, especially when many keys share the prefix. PyTrie provides a prefix-filtered key API, while the teaching implementation in the cited reference demonstrates traversal and collection (PyTrie documentation; GeeksforGeeks trie autocomplete example).

Define the interface before implementing it: decide how an empty prefix behaves, whether results are alphabetically ordered or ranked, and what happens when fewer than k completions exist. Also specify case normalization, separators, and Unicode handling; the lowercase a–z alphabet used in one teaching example is an example contract, not a limit of trie structures.

Choosing how each node stores children

The child representation affects memory use, lookup assumptions, and implementation complexity. No single representation is best for every alphabet or workload.

Representation Useful when Trade-off
Map children You want a readable, general-purpose trie for prefix operations. Maps carry per-node overhead; lookup complexity depends on the map’s behavior.
Fixed child array The alphabet is small, fixed, and well-defined. Indexing is simple, but unused slots still take space. A lowercase example can reserve slots for a through z.
Compressed or radix trie You want to reduce chains of single-child nodes. Edges hold string segments, so traversal compares segments rather than one character per node.
Ternary search tree A character-index structure is a better fit for the workload. Compare ordering behavior, implementation complexity, memory, and query needs; there is no universal winner.
Sorted set or list Ordered key ranges can handle the required prefix queries without trie-specific operations. Range-query behavior differs from direct trie traversal; weigh update and implementation costs in the target language.
Trie with a top-K cache at each node Ranked suggestions are requested frequently and the ranking set is bounded. Queries can read cached results, but writes require cache maintenance and extra memory.

A trie does not automatically outperform a hash table or sorted collection, nor is it always more memory-efficient. The outcome depends on how much prefixes are shared, the child representation, the balance of reads and updates, and which operations the application needs. PyTrie’s efficiency comparison is conditional on keys sharing relatively few prefixes, and the teaching reference also presents sorted-set alternatives (PyTrie documentation; GeeksforGeeks trie autocomplete example).

When to cache ranked top-K suggestions

For frequent ranked queries, a trie can keep a capped, sorted list of the best suggestions at each node. Once a query reaches its prefix node, it reads from that node’s cache instead of traversing every descendant. The DSA Handbook gives O(L × K) input or update work and O(L + k) query work for its presented design, where K is the cache cap and k is the number of requested results. These bounds describe that design, not every trie implementation (DSA Handbook: Tries).

This trades cheaper bounded suggestion reads for more work and storage during insertion or score changes. Maintain existing keys rather than adding duplicate cache entries, and define deterministic tie-breaking when scores match. The cache is most appropriate when reads are frequent enough to justify maintaining it across updates.

Correctness checks before shipping

  • Mark complete keys explicitly; a terminal node may also have children.
  • On deletion, unmark the key and prune only nodes that are neither terminal nor needed by another key.
  • Specify normalization, case sensitivity, Unicode behavior, separators, and empty-key or empty-prefix behavior.
  • Define suggestion ordering and the maximum result count; do not assume traversal order equals ranking order.
  • For ranked caches, update existing entries and test score changes and tie-breaking.
  • Choose a child representation and any cache based on the actual read/update mix and memory budget.
