To keep Happo visual tests affordable, first estimate snapshot use, then match the CI runner to your repository’s visibility and the job’s workload. Happo’s free plan currently lists 5,000 Chrome snapshots per month; GitHub Actions costs depend on whether the repository is public or private and, for private repositories, on the plan’s included usage. There is no evidence here to declare one India-based CI provider or cloud VM the cheapest.
Choose the right setup before writing workflow YAML
Happo compares screenshots with a baseline as part of a CI workflow. Its integrations include Storybook, Cypress and Playwright. Start with the framework and test path already present in your repository rather than adding a separate browser-testing stack just for screenshots. Monthly snapshots = component variants × browsers × Happo runs per month
For example, if a project captures 40 variants in one browser on 20 runs a month, that is 800 snapshots per month (40 × 1 × 20). Adding a second browser doubles the estimate to 1,600. These are arithmetic examples, not usage benchmarks.

Happo’s pricing page currently lists a free plan with 5,000 snapshots per month in Chrome, with no time limit or credit card. Paid plans add quota and browser options. The published quota and browser availability are subject to change; verify them on Happo’s pricing page before choosing a plan.
Control usage with deliberate triggers
- Begin with the browser coverage the team actually needs; the listed free allowance is Chrome-only.
- Decide which CI events need visual checks. More runs mean more snapshots when the same variants and browsers are captured each time.
- Count variants rather than pages or test files if that is how your integration defines captured components.
- Recalculate after adding browser coverage, variants or new CI triggers. Do not assume a run that fails elsewhere in CI consumes no Happo quota; confirm the behavior for your setup in Happo’s current documentation.
Select a low-cost GitHub Actions runner
GitHub’s billing rules differ by repository visibility. Under GitHub’s stated rules, hosted-runner usage for public repositories and use of self-hosted runners are free; hosted-runner use for private repositories draws on account allowances and may incur charges beyond them. Check the current GitHub Actions billing rules and your plan’s included minutes and storage before estimating spend.

Runner cost is only one part of the bill. A self-hosted runner can avoid GitHub hosted-runner charges under the stated rules, but the team still pays for any cloud VM or on-premises hardware and handles provisioning, maintenance and operations. When is ubuntu-slim worth considering?
Use it only if the whole job is lightweight, completes within the 15-minute timeout and does not need unsupported elevated privileges. A screenshot workflow may need to install dependencies, build or serve a UI, launch a browser and wait for tests. Measure the real workflow duration in your environment; the runner’s published limit is not a performance guarantee.

If the job exceeds the slim runner’s limits or needs capabilities it lacks, compare a suitable standard hosted runner with a self-hosted machine. For a private repository, include the GitHub plan’s remaining allowance and any overage in the hosted estimate. For self-hosting, include VM or hardware costs and the engineering time needed to keep the runner available and maintained. Without equivalent workload and current regional pricing, a universal cheapest option cannot be named.

Configure Happo without guessing at secrets or commands
The exact Happo Actions YAML, secret names, required permissions and package-manager commands depend on the current integration guide and repository. Use that guide to configure the workflow rather than relying on a generic snippet that might use an obsolete package or invented credential names. In the workflow, ensure the UI is built or served before the integration captures it, and make the CI trigger match the runs used in your monthly estimate.
Before enabling the workflow for every build, confirm that it can access the app or Storybook it needs, that its credentials are stored using the secret mechanism recommended by the integration, and that the selected runner can launch the required browser. Check the latest Happo instructions for exact configuration and secret requirements.
Troubleshoot the cost and setup problems that matter
- Snapshot use is higher than expected: Recount component variants, browser count and monthly run count. A browser matrix or additional CI triggers multiply usage.
- The free quota does not cover the planned checks: Reduce unnecessary browser or run coverage, or compare Happo’s current paid quotas and browser options on its pricing page.
- A private-repository Actions bill is higher than expected: Compare actual hosted-runner usage with the plan’s included allowance and current billing rules. Do not treat the hosted runner allowance as covering a separate VM used by a self-hosted runner.
- The job fails or times out on ubuntu-slim: Check whether the complete build-and-browser job exceeds its 15-minute limit or requires an operation needing elevated privileges. Select an appropriate runner if it does.
- The workflow cannot find the package, configuration or secret: Recheck the current Happo integration instructions and repository settings; the exact names and commands are integration-specific.
- A self-hosted runner is unavailable or unreliable: Review the team’s runner provisioning, maintenance and operational responsibilities. Self-hosting transfers those responsibilities rather than eliminating them.
