Start with Proton Experimental (or the newest numbered stable Proton shown in Steam), launch once with no extra options, then tune from a 1280×800, medium-quality profile with a consistent 30, 40, or 45 FPS cap.
The reliable approach is controlled testing: change one variable at a time, record what happens, and use current ProtonDB reports as community evidence rather than a guarantee. Your Deck model, SteamOS image, Proton build, game updates, graphics profile and Rockstar account state can all change the result.

What you need before installing
Install Grand Theft Auto IV: The Complete Edition from Steam. The listing identifies Rockstar North and Rockstar Toronto as developers, Rockstar Games as publisher, and 24 March 2020 as the Complete Edition release date. It includes GTA IV and both Episodes from Liberty City.
- Storage: Steam lists 22GB of required hard-drive space. Keep at least that amount available on the drive where Steam installs the game.
- Account: A Rockstar Games account and an internet connection are required for initial activation. Have the account credentials ready before the first launch.
- Steam Deck: The game is a Windows PC release. Steam Deck runs it through Valve’s Proton compatibility layer rather than a native Linux build.
- Features: The Complete Edition replaced the earlier digital releases. Steam’s update notice says Games for Windows Live, multiplayer mode and leaderboards were removed from this edition.
If the internal drive is full, a reputable Steam Deck-compatible UHS-I A2 V30 microSD card in a 512GB or 1TB capacity can provide installation space. Storage capacity does not change Proton compatibility or frame pacing.

Install the game and set a first Proton build
- Open Steam on the Deck, find Grand Theft Auto IV: The Complete Edition, and install it to the internal drive or an inserted microSD card with enough free space.
- After installation, open the game’s page, choose the gear icon, then select Properties.
- Open Compatibility and enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Choose Proton Experimental. If you prefer a numbered release, choose the newest stable Proton currently offered in the menu.
- Close Properties and start the game once before adding launch options. Let the first-run setup and Rockstar account activation complete.
- Exit normally, restart the game, and check that the same Proton build launches it consistently.
Do not begin with a collection of launch commands copied from an old guide. Extra options can mask the real cause of a failure and may become unnecessary after a Proton or game update. Add an option only when you can explain what it changes and test it independently.
Which Proton version is best?
For a new installation, Proton Experimental or the newest numbered stable Proton is the most sensible starting point. Proton changes over time, so a build that solved a launch problem last year may behave differently after a SteamOS, Proton or game update. Conversely, a newer build can fix a regression without any change to your graphics settings.
There is no authoritative, universal “best Proton” for GTA IV. The practical choice is the build that launches your current installation, completes the Rockstar account flow, renders video correctly, accepts your controller and maintains consistent frame pacing. ProtonDB reports can identify builds, launch options and workarounds that helped other players, but they are community reports, not guarantees across Deck models, SteamOS images, Proton versions, game updates or launcher states.

How to compare Proton builds without creating confusion
- Keep your resolution, graphics settings and frame-rate cap unchanged.
- Test one Proton build at a time. Start with Experimental, then test the newest stable build, followed by another build suggested by recent ProtonDB reports for your exact symptom.
- Use the same short test route in the game: reach the title screen, load a save, drive through a busy area and trigger a video or cutscene.
- Record launch success, controller behavior, black-screen or video problems, frame pacing and whether the Rockstar sign-in flow completes.
- Keep the build that is most reliable, not necessarily the one that produces the highest momentary frame counter.
Use a stable baseline for graphics and frame pacing
Set the game to 1280×800 first, with a medium graphics profile. This gives you a known baseline before you investigate individual settings. GTA IV can feel worse when its frame time fluctuates than when its average frame rate is lower, so a stable cap is more useful than chasing an uncapped peak.

Choose one cap and leave it in place while you adjust settings. If frame pacing is uneven, lower demanding options such as shadows or view distance one at a time. Test the same route after each change. Do not promise yourself a fixed FPS result: no authoritative, one-size-fits-all GTA IV Deck benchmark or battery test establishes a universal number.
Why frame pacing matters more than a peak number
A fluctuating 45 FPS display can feel less responsive than a steady 30 FPS presentation. GTA IV’s large streaming world can produce different workloads while driving, entering dense traffic, switching cameras or loading a cutscene. A cap that the Deck can hold in those demanding moments usually feels better than a higher cap that it reaches only in quiet areas.

A complete first-run procedure
- Install and activate: Finish the Rockstar account sign-in and initial internet activation. Do not judge Proton compatibility before this setup has completed.
- Confirm the baseline: Use 1280×800, medium settings and a 30 FPS cap. Play long enough to load a save and move through a busy section.
- Check the essentials: Confirm that the game reaches the main menu, video plays, Steam Input or your selected controller layout works, and saves load normally.
- Test a higher cap: Move to 40 FPS only if 30 FPS is consistent. Try 45 FPS last, and keep the lower cap if busy scenes become erratic.
- Tune one setting: If the cap is not stable, lower shadows or view distance, test again, and keep only changes that improve consistency without introducing visual errors.
- Document the working state: Note the Proton build, resolution, cap, graphics changes and any launch options. This makes recovery much easier after an update.
Troubleshooting GTA IV on Steam Deck

If the game returns to the library
Start with Steam’s file-verification tool, then restart the Deck. Re-test with Proton Experimental and the newest numbered stable Proton while leaving launch options empty. If one build fails and another works, record the working build instead of changing graphics settings that cannot affect the initial launch.

Allow the first-run setup to finish, including account activation, and remove commands you added from older guides. A different Proton build can change video behavior. If the issue persists, test with a newly created Proton prefix. A prefix reset removes per-game tweaks, so write down your working Proton version, controller layout and graphics settings before resetting.
If controls are wrong
Open the game’s controller configuration in Steam and confirm the active Steam Input layout. Then inspect the in-game bindings rather than changing Proton immediately. A community layout can help when a game expects keyboard-style controls, but test it against your own preferred button mapping.

If motion feels jerky
Lock the game to a cap you can sustain in the busiest area you have tested. Lower shadows or view distance separately, and avoid changing the cap and several graphics settings at the same time. If a setting improves a quiet scene but causes drops during driving, keep the lower setting or lower cap.
If activation or sign-in fails
Verify that the Deck is online and that you are signing in to the Rockstar account associated with the game. Account-service problems can look like Proton failures, so test the network and account flow before rebuilding files or changing graphics settings. Use current Rockstar and ProtonDB guidance for the exact error message.

When to verify files or rebuild the Proton prefix
File verification is a low-risk first response to a failed update, a missing executable or a sudden launch regression. It does not erase your graphics choices, so try it before more destructive steps.

Rebuild or reinstall the Proton prefix only when the prefix appears corrupted or a clean environment is required to test a suspected workaround. A prefix reset can remove launcher state, controller tweaks and other per-game changes. Record those changes first, then launch without extra options and complete the first-run setup again. If the clean prefix works, reapply adjustments one at a time so you know which change is responsible for any later failure.
How SteamOS and Deck models affect results
Steam Deck display, storage and hardware configurations differ by model. Steam’s product information cautions that product specifications are subject to change. Therefore, battery life, power draw, loading behavior and the frame rate you can hold at a given cap vary with the specific Deck, screen brightness, background activity, SteamOS version, Proton build and graphics settings.
Do not treat another player’s battery estimate or FPS counter as a promise for your system. Compare your own frame pacing and battery behavior using the same cap and route. If a SteamOS or Proton update changes the result, repeat the controlled Proton comparison before changing several settings.

The Steam-distributed Complete Edition contains the original GTA IV campaign and both Episodes from Liberty City. It is not the earlier Games for Windows Live release: Steam’s update notice records the removal of Games for Windows Live, multiplayer mode and leaderboards. Plan your Deck setup around the features that remain in this edition and do not follow guides that require the discontinued service.
A practical decision framework
- It launches and feels consistent: Keep the current Proton build, 1280×800 resolution, medium settings and the lowest cap that remains smooth in busy scenes. Raise the cap only after a repeatable test.
- It launches but videos or a feature are broken: Remove unnecessary launch options, test another current Proton build, and compare a fresh prefix if the problem survives.
- It does not launch: Verify files, restart the Deck, and test Experimental versus the newest stable Proton before changing graphics.
- It worked until an update: Record the new symptom, test one alternate Proton build, and check recent ProtonDB reports. Avoid assuming that an old workaround is still required.
- You need more storage: Move the installation to a suitable microSD card or expand storage; do not expect storage media to alter compatibility.
Recommended starting profile
For most installations, the clean starting profile is GTA IV: The Complete Edition from Steam, Proton Experimental or the newest numbered stable Proton, no launch options, 1280×800 resolution, medium graphics and a 30 FPS cap. After confirming activation, controller input, video playback and stable driving performance, test 40 FPS and then 45 FPS only if the Deck holds those targets consistently. Keep a different Proton build or a fresh prefix as troubleshooting tools, not as permanent rituals, and let repeatable behavior on your current Deck determine the final configuration.
