Use FFmpeg’s -nostdin option to prevent it from waiting for terminal input when you run it in the background. For a stream you want to manage beyond a single shell session, create a systemd service, then use journalctl to inspect its output. Point FFmpeg at the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room.
Before you start
- A Debian host with FFmpeg installed and a build that supports the encoders and protocols you plan to use. Check the Debian release and FFmpeg build; package versions and features vary.
- A scheduled or active YouTube live event, with its stream URL and stream key available in Live Control Room.
- An input file or other source FFmpeg can read, plus encoder settings that suit that source and YouTube’s current guidance.
YouTube recommends using the RTMPS URL for a secure connection. Its ordinary RTMP URL may appear by default, so select or reveal the RTMPS option in Live Control Room. FFmpeg documents RTMPS as encrypted transport. YouTube: Set up your encoder for live streaming · FFmpeg protocol documentation.

Prepare the FFmpeg command
Include -nostdin among FFmpeg’s options. Without it, FFmpeg may check for console input and suspend when launched as a background task. The FFmpeg FAQ also documents redirecting standard input from /dev/null as an alternative on Linux and macOS. FFmpeg FAQ: How do I run ffmpeg as a background task?

ffmpeg -nostdin -re -i /path/to/input
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac
-f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_HOST/APP/STREAM_KEY'
This is a template, not a tested command. Replace the input path and destination with your actual values from YouTube Live Control Room. The codec choices are illustrative: verify that your FFmpeg build supports them and that they fit your source. Follow YouTube’s current recommendations for resolution, frame rate, and bitrate rather than assuming one bitrate suits every stream. YouTube encoder settings.

For a file you intend to repeat, configure looping deliberately and check timestamp and audio/video behavior with that particular input. A loop option or command that works for one file may not behave correctly with another.
Choose how to keep the process running
For a short-lived background job
Use -nostdin in the command, or redirect standard input from /dev/null. A shell’s background operator can put the process in the background, but by itself it does not provide service supervision or arrange startup after reboot. Use this approach for a job you will manage within a short shell session, not as a substitute for a persistent service.

For a persistent job, use systemd
A systemd unit gives the FFmpeg process a name, lets you manage it as a service, and makes its output available through the system journal. Run it under an appropriate service account with a suitable working directory. Add a restart policy only if you want systemd to restart FFmpeg after a failure; decide that behavior intentionally so a persistent input or configuration error does not trigger an unwanted restart loop.

Create and start the unit
- Create a unit file such as
/etc/systemd/system/youtube-ffmpeg.service. Put the FFmpeg command in itsExecStartsetting, including-nostdin. Configure the service account and working directory for your setup. Keep the key out of broadly readable files and scripts. - After creating or changing the unit, reload systemd’s unit definitions:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Start the service:
sudo systemctl start youtube-ffmpeg.service. - Check whether it is running:
sudo systemctl status youtube-ffmpeg.service. - Read its recent logs:
sudo journalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.service. Follow new entries as they arrive withsudo journalctl -f -u youtube-ffmpeg.service.
Starting a service and enabling it at boot are separate actions. If the stream should start automatically after a reboot, configure the unit’s boot behavior for your Debian system and verify it rather than assuming that starting it once enables startup. The journal options above are documented by systemd. journalctl manual.
Protect the YouTube stream key
Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to the associated event. Restrict access to unit configuration, scripts, and any file containing the key. Do not commit it to a repository or paste it into shared logs or bug reports. A key embedded in a command-line URL may be visible to privileged local users or process-inspection tools, so account for that when setting host access controls. If the key is exposed, rotate it in YouTube Live Control Room.

Troubleshoot common failures
- FFmpeg stops or suspends after backgrounding: Add
-nostdinor redirect standard input with< /dev/null. A background operator alone does not prevent FFmpeg from checking terminal input. - TLS or SSL error: Confirm you copied the RTMPS URL rather than the ordinary RTMP endpoint. If the correct URL still produces an SSL issue, YouTube suggests trying port 443. YouTube encoder troubleshooting.
- Connection timeout: Recheck the server URL character by character and confirm the installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance calls out both URL correctness and encoder support.
- The service has no useful output, or you cannot tell why it exited: Inspect its journal with
sudo journalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.service; usesudo journalctl -f -u youtube-ffmpeg.serviceto watch new entries. - YouTube rejects the stream or no video appears: Check that the key belongs to the selected live event, the input is readable, and the encoder settings match the source and YouTube’s current requirements. Keep the key private while investigating.
