Start with Raspberry Pi’s recommended power supply for your model, then verify voltage at the Pi while your actual stream is running. No specific India-sold bank has been established here as safe or reliable for continuous streaming or pass-through charging.
Start with your Raspberry Pi model
Current Raspberry Pi setup guidance specifies different power requirements by model. These are supply recommendations, not measurements of a particular FFmpeg workload or power bank.

These figures come from Raspberry Pi Ltd’s official, undated setup documentation, accessed in 2026: Raspberry Pi getting started. A USB-C power bank advertised as 5 V/3 A may be a starting point for evaluating a Pi 4, but that label alone does not establish steady output at the board or continuous-streaming suitability. It is not the Pi 5 recommendation.

Confirm its output profile
Match the bank’s documented voltage and current output to the supply recommendation for your precise model. Check the output mode you intend to use; a maximum rating that applies only to another port or negotiated mode does not establish that the bank supplies the required profile over the cable you will use.

Measure voltage at the Pi under load
Voltage printed on a bank or measured at its port does not account for cable loss. Raspberry Pi’s guidance says, “Allow for voltage loss in the cable, especially if your power supply cable is removable.” Use a suitable short cable and, if practical, a USB-C power meter to check voltage at the device end while the Pi is doing the real FFmpeg job, with its normal peripherals connected.
Raspberry Pi’s hardware documentation says low-voltage detection on most models since Pi B+—excluding Zero models—detects supply voltage below 4.63 V (±5%). This is a detection threshold, not a target operating voltage or proof that a setup is stable. The documentation also lists total USB peripheral limits of 1,200 mA across Pi 2/3/4 and 600 mA or 1,600 mA for Pi 5 depending on supply capacity. These are peripheral limits, not an FFmpeg power-consumption profile. See Raspberry Pi hardware documentation.

Ask for evidence on continuous use
If the bank will remain plugged in while powering the Pi, confirm pass-through operation for that exact model in its maker’s documentation. Do not assume that charging and discharging simultaneously is supported or safe for continuous operation. Also look for documented thermal and battery behavior for sustained use, a measured runtime at a comparable load, and India-specific warranty and availability. No particular bank’s pass-through behavior, runtime, or 24/7 suitability has been verified here.

YouTube’s encoder recommendations describe the stream sent to YouTube; they do not show that a given Pi can encode it continuously or establish the Pi’s electrical draw. YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; constant bitrate (CBR); and a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. Its H.264 recommendations include 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. The available encoder formats and performance still depend on the Pi, software, and workload.

- Choose a resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate the Pi can sustain; do not infer encode capability from YouTube’s ingest targets.
- Run a speed test and set the stream bitrate to suit your available upload capacity.
- Test before the stream, using similar audio and motion, and monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages.
- During that same test, check the supply voltage at the Pi and observe the setup under its intended sustained workload.
YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” That test checks the stream, but it does not replace a power and load test. See YouTube Live encoder settings.
Power bank, UPS, or cloud streaming?
- Power bank: Consider it when portability or backup power matters, but select it by the Pi’s model-specific power profile and verify voltage, runtime, thermal behavior, and any pass-through operation under your actual conditions.
- Pi-compatible UPS: Consider a compatible UPS board or mini UPS if the goal is brief outage bridging or controlled shutdown. Its presence alone does not demonstrate that a Pi can stream indefinitely through an outage.
- Cloud streaming: If your goal is to keep an uploaded-video YouTube stream running without leaving a Pi, PC, or home connection on, a cloud service avoids powering an always-on device at home.

Common problems and what to check
- Low-voltage warning or instability: Check voltage at the Pi under load, reduce cable loss with a suitable cable, and verify that the bank’s output mode matches the Pi’s requirement.
- The stream drops even though the Pi stays on: Check YouTube stream health, network upload capacity, encoder settings, and FFmpeg behavior. A stable supply does not guarantee a stable ingest connection.
- The bank shuts down or runtime is too short: Check its documented low-load shutoff behavior and measured runtime at the real load; capacity printed in mAh alone does not establish usable runtime.
- Uncertain behavior while charging and powering the Pi: Confirm pass-through use for the exact bank with its maker. If continuous use is undocumented, do not assume it is supported.
Copyright and channel considerations
Power and encoder settings do not grant permission to stream the content. Before looping recordings, confirm that you have the necessary rights to the video and audio, and review YouTube’s applicable live-stream and channel rules, including copyright and reused-content policies. A technically healthy stream can still face content or policy issues.
