Check FFmpeg’s live status first: note its frame count, encoding rate, output time, speed, and any dup or drop counters shown by your installed version. Then inspect timestamps if the numbers look inconsistent, and check YouTube’s stream status separately. FFmpeg reports what its local process is doing; a clean counter alone does not prove YouTube received every frame or that viewers saw an uninterrupted stream.
Read FFmpeg’s live status
FFmpeg prints a human-readable status line while it runs. The -stats status is enabled by default, and the documented default update interval is 0.5 seconds. Watch how the values change over time rather than judging from a single line.

- Frame count: the number of frames processed so far by the relevant output operation.
- Encoding rate: the reported frame rate, often shown as
fps. Compare its trend with the output rate your command is intended to produce; a temporary fluctuation is not by itself proof of lost delivery. - Output time: the media timestamp reached by the output, not necessarily wall-clock time elapsed.
- Speed: processing speed relative to real time. Sustained speed below
1xcan indicate the process is not keeping up with real time, but does not establish what YouTube received. dupanddrop: if present in your build’s status, these counters indicate frame duplication or dropping in FFmpeg’s processing/output path. Their interpretation depends on the command and whether it is encoding or stream-copying.
Status fields and presentation can vary by version and command. Check your installed build with ffmpeg -version; use the documentation corresponding to that version when a field is absent or behaves differently.
Capture machine-readable progress
For monitoring or logging, add -progress pipe:1 as a global option. FFmpeg emits periodic key-value records to standard output; each update ends with progress=continue, and the final update with progress=end. Set the reporting interval with -stats_period.

ffmpeg -stats_period 1 -progress pipe:1 -i INPUT [existing options] OUTPUTThis is an illustration, not a complete streaming command: preserve your existing input, encoding, and YouTube output options. If a script parses standard output, capture standard error separately so human-readable messages do not contaminate the progress records.
Check whether your command is causing rate conversion
Before treating a drop counter as an unexplained failure, inspect every -r option and where it appears. Input and output frame-rate options do different jobs, and stream copy behaves differently from encoding.

Also verify whether the relevant video stream is actually being encoded or copied. The same-looking option can have different implications depending on its placement and the processing path.

Investigate timestamps when the status is unclear
If counters and playback do not agree, inspect timestamp progression rather than assuming the counter explains the symptom.

Use -debug_ts for a live diagnostic
FFmpeg documents -debug_ts as a timestamp and latency debugging option. Its output may change between versions, and FFmpeg warns against using it as a portable scripting interface. Treat it as diagnostic text to examine for irregular timestamp progression, not as a stable format for automation.
Use the showinfo filter where appropriate
The showinfo filter logs basic packet information for debugging and development. It can help you inspect the stream’s timing and frame information, but it does not automatically identify the cause of an irregularity.

Check YouTube separately
FFmpeg’s output is evidence about the local process. YouTube’s stream status is a separate observation of what the platform is receiving and processing. Check the status for the active stream in YouTube’s live-streaming interface and compare its timing with the FFmpeg log. The exact Studio navigation and health labels can change, so use the current interface rather than relying on a remembered menu path. Do not infer that a clean FFmpeg counter guarantees YouTube received every frame or that playback was clean for viewers.
