Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

This lets you work with multiple checked-out branches at once and inspect or assert on the messages each test sends. It does not isolate running services, configuration, secrets, ports, or external test data; manage those separately.
What a worktree isolates—and what it does not
Git worktrees attach multiple working directories to one repository, so you can check out more than one branch at a time. Git documents detached worktrees as useful for throwaway experiments or tests that should not disturb your existing development work. See the Git worktree manual.

A linked worktree gives a test scenario its own checked-out files and working state. It is not a separate clone or a container: Git shares repository data and refs in documented ways, while each linked worktree has its own administrative information. A worktree also does not create separate application services or isolate state outside Git.

Use a named branch when the test change needs to persist or be reviewed. For a disposable experiment, a detached worktree can avoid creating a branch. Choose distinct directories so each test setup has its own working files.
#1 Best Overall
-
From the existing repository, add a worktree for a new test branch with
git worktree add -b test/email-scenario ../email-scenario. This creates the branch and checks it out in the sibling directory. -
For a throwaway test based on the current commit, use
git worktree add --detach ../email-experiment. The directory checks out a commit without switching the branch in your original worktree. -
Change into the new directory, then install or prepare the application dependencies using the project’s normal setup process. Dependency commands vary by language and framework.

Repeat with a different path and branch or commit for each concurrent scenario. Avoid configuring two test instances to compete for the same port or to mutate the same external test data.
Route test mail to a capture service
Configure the test instance’s mail transport to send to an SMTP capture service rather than real recipients. Mailpit is one local option: its project describes an SMTP server with a web interface and API for automated integration testing. The project lists both single-binary and Docker distribution options; see the Mailpit project.
Set the SMTP host, port, and any authentication options using the capture service’s documented configuration. Keep these values confined to test configuration, and do not put test credentials or routing settings into production configuration. If several worktrees run simultaneously, give each instance an appropriate service endpoint or otherwise ensure they do not unintentionally share captured messages.
Inspect messages and assert on outcomes
After a test triggers an email, inspect the captured message in the service’s web interface or use its API for automated checks. Mailpit’s integration guide describes querying its API, retrieving rendered HTML or text message parts, and using its Chaos feature to test how an application handles unexpected SMTP responses. These are project-documented capabilities, not a guarantee that a particular application’s test suite already integrates with them. See the Mailpit integration testing documentation.

-
Check that the expected message was captured and that its recipient and subject match the scenario.
-
Assert on the relevant rendered HTML or text content rather than relying only on a successful send call.
-
When failure handling matters, use the capture service’s documented SMTP failure behavior and verify the application’s response.
-
Keep scenarios distinguishable through separate test data or message identifiers so parallel runs do not make assertions against each other’s messages.

Keep parallel runs independent outside Git
Worktrees organize source trees; your test setup must provide any further isolation it needs. Before running scenarios in parallel, check which resources are shared by your application and capture-service configuration.
Best Value
-
Assign non-conflicting ports and service endpoints.
-
Use separate test accounts, databases, queues, or other mutable external state when a scenario writes to them.
-
Scope SMTP settings and credentials to the test environment, and keep secrets out of committed files.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Choose a message cleanup or retention approach appropriate to your capture service and tests.
Remove temporary worktrees when finished
When a scenario is done, remove its working directory with Git rather than deleting the directory behind Git’s back: git worktree remove ../email-experiment. For a named branch worktree, first preserve or discard any work you need; then remove it with the corresponding path. Git documents adding and removing worktrees in its worktree manual.
Use this workflow when the main problem is avoiding branch switches and keeping test changes separate. For isolation of processes, services, or external state, configure those boundaries independently; a worktree alone does not provide them.
