To run playlist media processing unattended on Windows, use yt-dlp to extract playlist items, FFmpeg to process a media input, and a Windows service wrapper such as WinSW or NSSM to launch and manage the command. These are separate jobs: an ordinary YouTube playlist page URL is not automatically a stable media input for FFmpeg. First validate the exact extraction and handoff interactively; only then configure it as a service.
How the pieces fit together
FFmpeg reads inputs supplied with -i and supports network streams and other input types, but a playlist webpage is not itself necessarily a direct media stream. The FFmpeg command-line documentation describes its input model; yt-dlp documents playlist selection and output templates in its README. A service wrapper then runs the configured executable and arguments outside an interactive terminal.

- yt-dlp: finds and extracts playlist media according to the options you choose.
- FFmpeg: consumes a suitable media input and performs the processing or output operation you configure.
- WinSW or NSSM: registers and launches the ordinary executable as a Windows service.
Do not assume a particular yt-dlp-to-FFmpeg pipeline will work unchanged: the right handoff depends on whether the downstream process can read stdin and on the output you intend to create.

Test the playlist interactively
- Install FFmpeg and yt-dlp, then note their full executable paths. Use the current yt-dlp documentation for playlist-selection options and output templates rather than assuming every playlist should be treated as one continuous media stream.
- Run the intended yt-dlp command in a normal terminal and confirm it can access and extract the playlist items you need. Playlist access and extraction behavior can change, so test the exact command you plan to deploy.
- Choose how the extracted media reaches FFmpeg. yt-dlp can write output to stdout for a downstream process that reads stdin; its FAQ illustrates piping to a player. That example does not establish a ready-made FFmpeg pipeline for every use case.
- Test the complete handoff interactively, including the intended FFmpeg input and output. Confirm that it works for your media, then preserve the tested arguments for the service configuration.
Make FFmpeg suitable for background operation
Include -nostdin in the FFmpeg invocation so it does not check console input while running in the background. The FFmpeg FAQ recommends this option for background operation; redirecting stdin to NUL on Windows is an alternative. Neither step installs or supervises a Windows service.
#1 Best Overall
- Edit your videos and pictures to perfection with a host of helpful editing tools.
- Create amazing videos with fun effects and interesting transitions.
- Record or add audio clips to your video, or simply pull stock sounds from the NCH Sound Library.
- Enhance your audio tracks with impressive audio effects, like Pan, Reverb or Echo.
- Share directly online to Facebook, YouTube, and other platforms or burn directly to disc.
An illustrative command shape is ffmpeg -nostdin -i "INPUT" [your tested output options] "OUTPUT". Replace the bracketed portion and input/output values with the arguments validated for your task. This is a configuration shape, not a verified end-to-end yt-dlp/FFmpeg playlist command.
Choose and configure one Windows service wrapper
Both WinSW and NSSM can launch an executable as a Windows service. Set the executable, arguments, and working directory explicitly, and use absolute paths so the service does not depend on an interactive shell’s PATH or current directory.

| Wrapper | Configuration model | Useful details |
|---|---|---|
| WinSW | XML configuration beside the wrapper executable | Supports install, start, stop, restart, and status commands. Its v3 documentation describes LocalSystem as the default service account and the configuration directory as the default working directory. See WinSW v3, XML configuration, and CLI commands. |
| NSSM | Application path, arguments, and startup directory configured through its command line or GUI | The application path is mandatory. NSSM says it attempts graceful shutdown of the monitored application and subprocesses when the service is stopped. See NSSM usage. |
WinSW setup outline
- Follow the WinSW v3 documentation to place and name the wrapper executable and its XML configuration. Define the FFmpeg executable path and the tested arguments in that configuration.
- Set the working directory explicitly. If your command references local files, confirm that the service account can read or write them at those locations.
- Review the configured service account rather than relying unknowingly on defaults. WinSW v3 documents LocalSystem as the default; choose an account and permissions appropriate for the required files and network access.
- Use the WinSW CLI commands documented for your version to install the service, start it, and check its status. Use stop or restart when managing it; do not assume the wrapper validates the yt-dlp/FFmpeg pipeline for you.
NSSM setup outline
- Use NSSM’s install workflow and supply the full path to the executable you want the service to launch. Configure the tested arguments and a startup directory.
- Check argument quoting carefully, especially where paths contain spaces. Use absolute paths for FFmpeg, yt-dlp, and any files referenced by the command.
- Configure the service, then start and inspect it using NSSM and Windows service-management tools. NSSM documents its application configuration and stop behavior in its usage guide.
For either wrapper, remember that a service can run under a different account and environment from your signed-in shell. A command that succeeds interactively can still fail as a service if that account lacks access to a file, executable, or network resource. WinSW’s XML configuration documentation describes service-account and working-directory settings.

Troubleshoot failures by reproducing the service environment
- FFmpeg cannot open the input: confirm that the input is a usable media source, not merely a playlist webpage URL. Re-run the yt-dlp extraction and handoff interactively and check that the chosen downstream input method matches the command.
- The command works in a terminal but not as a service: run it under the same service account and working directory where possible. Verify permissions for executables, local files, and network resources, and replace relative paths with absolute ones.
- The service starts and then exits: inspect the wrapper’s available logs and Windows Event Log entries. Re-run the tested command directly with the service account and environment to distinguish command errors from service configuration issues.
- FFmpeg appears to wait for input: use
-nostdinfor background execution, or redirect stdin toNULon Windows. This only addresses console input checks, not extraction failures or service supervision. - Playlist extraction changes or stops working: test the current yt-dlp command again and consult the yt-dlp FAQ. Playlist access may change; service-wrapper documentation does not guarantee uninterrupted playback.
- Stopping the service leaves a process behind: check the wrapper’s stop behavior and logs. NSSM documents an attempt at graceful shutdown of the monitored application and subprocesses; do not assume all commands or child processes will respond identically.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep pre-recorded video live on a YouTube channel rather than build and maintain a Windows pipeline, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; video streams as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; automatic recovery is available if YouTube drops the stream; and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
