Yes, vMix can loop video and stream to YouTube, but the documentation does not confirm that playback from a network drive or NAS will remain reliable unattended. vMix’s List and PlayList features can repeat video playback for a basic continuous stream. They are not a full broadcast scheduler, and you should test your exact network path and recovery behavior before depending on it for a 24/7 channel.

There is an important distinction between repeating a playlist and scheduling a television-style channel. In its knowledge-base article last updated January 17, 2025, vMix says it is primarily designed for live events and “does not support time of day scheduling.” It also says it does not provide the functionality to broadcast a 24/7 television programming schedule. The same guidance describes List and PlayList as useful for basic 24/7 streaming when videos do not need to start at specific times. Does vMix support scheduling?

For a simple shuffled or sequential file rotation, List is usually the closer fit. Choose PlayList when item-level timing, transitions, or switching between inputs matters. A List can also be used within a standard PlayList, and vMix’s scheduling guidance notes that List does not require loading every video at once—a consideration when loading the entire collection would consume system resources.

How to set up a basic looping YouTube stream
- Choose the playback method. In vMix, create a List for a collection of media files, or use PlayList if you need to sequence inputs or configure individual item positions, durations, or transitions.
- Set and check the loop behavior. For List, confirm Auto Next is enabled and turn on Loop. For PlayList, enable Loop. Check that playback advances to the intended next item and returns to the beginning at the end. List guide · PlayList guide
- Configure YouTube streaming in your current vMix installation. vMix supports YouTube as a destination. - Test from the actual production environment. Use the same Windows account, path form, share permissions, vMix preset, and network conditions planned for the live channel. Let the playlist pass through the entire media set and repeat at least once.
- Test interruption and restart cases. Check playback when the network share disappears and returns, whether the next file loads across transitions, and whether restarting vMix restores the intended playlist and stream setup. Keep a local fallback copy of essential media if losing access to the share would take the channel off air.
- Verify YouTube account and content requirements. Check current YouTube Help for live-stream eligibility, duration, and archive handling for the account you plan to use. Review copyright and reused-content implications for every video; the fact that a file can be looped does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast it or that it complies with YouTube policies.
What a network drive changes
The vMix documentation establishes file-list playback and looping, but it does not explicitly confirm behavior for mapped Windows drives, UNC paths, SMB shares or NAS devices. It also does not specify share-credential handling, local caching, buffering, recovery after a share interruption, or reliable continuous playback from a network location. General support for video files is not a guarantee that a particular network setup will work unattended.
- Test the exact path style and permissions under the account that will run vMix; a path available in your interactive session may not be available in a different run context.
- Watch what happens at file boundaries, when the share is briefly unavailable, and after it reconnects. Confirm the playlist advances rather than stopping on an inaccessible file.
- Restart the host and vMix as part of the test. Check whether the media paths, playlist, and intended streaming setup return as expected.
- Use a local fallback for critical media if an interruption cannot be allowed to stop playback. Treat these as operational precautions, not behaviors vMix guarantees.
Plan for more than a playback loop
A loop setting only addresses what happens when the media sequence reaches its end. It does not establish that the network path will stay available, that the host will recover after a restart, or that YouTube will accept a reconnection. Treat the complete system—media access, vMix playback, the host, network, and YouTube stream—as something to test under realistic interruption conditions. If you need fixed program start times or daypart schedules, vMix’s own guidance says its List and PlayList features are not a substitute for a full scheduling system.
