You can run an always-on YouTube video stream from a Windows mini PC by sending an encoder feed from OBS Studio to YouTube Live. First confirm your channel is eligible, then configure the stream key and a bitrate the PC and internet connection can sustain. Test the complete setup before relying on it: a mini PC, OBS, and YouTube do not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation, and YouTube may not archive streams longer than 12 hours.
What you need before setting up
- An eligible YouTube channel: YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. First-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned start. See YouTube’s live-streaming enablement guidance.
- A Windows mini PC that can sustain the workload: OBS supports Windows 10 and Windows 11, but operating-system compatibility is not a performance guarantee. The required capability depends on resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity. Use the OBS system requirements as a compatibility floor, not proof that a particular configuration will work.
- OBS Studio and a video source: Prepare the video or scene you intend to stream. Test the actual content, including audio and movement, rather than assuming a static or short preview represents the full workload.
- A stable internet connection and enough upload capacity: YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate. Use a speed test and leave that margin available for the live feed.
- Storage for a local recording, if you need a copy: YouTube recommends keeping a local archive. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as a YouTube archive.
Set up OBS and YouTube Live
- Enable live streaming on your channel. In YouTube Studio, start the live-streaming setup and complete any verification or eligibility steps shown. If this is your first time enabling live streaming, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Install OBS Studio on the mini PC. OBS supports Windows 10 and Windows 11. Run its Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then test the resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene you plan to use; the wizard cannot guarantee that a sustained workload will run reliably on your hardware.
- Create or schedule a stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Open the stream’s settings and copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential: do not publish or share it, and reset it if you think it has been exposed. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and stream settings guidance.
- Choose an encoder configuration the PC can sustain. For 1080p at 30 frames per second using H.264, YouTube’s 2026 guidance recommends a 5 Mbps video bitrate and lists 4 Mbps as the minimum. YouTube’s general guidance for RTMP/RTMPS includes CBR, H.264, H.265, or AV1, up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval not exceeding four seconds. These are platform settings, not proof that a given mini PC can encode them continuously. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates for the output format you select.
- Check upload headroom. Measure the real outbound speed on the connection the mini PC will use. YouTube recommends that upload capacity exceed the total stream bitrate by 20%; allow for audio and any other outbound traffic rather than sizing the connection to the video bitrate alone. A connection disruption can break a live stream.
- Preview and test the complete feed. Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages before making the stream public or relying on it. Include the intended audio and representative video movement. Watch for encoding overload, dropped frames, or network warnings during a sustained test.
- Enable and verify local recording if retention matters. Configure OBS to record locally and confirm that the recording file is growing. Ensure the mini PC has enough available storage for the recording duration you need.
- Use content you have rights to stream. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match may cause a placeholder to replace the stream, an interruption, or termination. Having a licence does not necessarily prevent an interruption: where Content ID applies, confirm that the rights holder has allowlisted your channel. Review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and YouTube’s Terms of Service.
Plan for the mini PC to stay online
An encoder setup is only one part of a long-running stream. The PC, power, network, and OBS session all need to remain available. Windows updates or restarts, a network outage, an encoder failure, or heat under sustained load can interrupt the feed; the cited platform and OBS guidance does not promise 24/7 uptime or establish a universal mini PC duty-cycle rating.

- Use a stable connection and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages while the feed is running.
- Check that the local recording continues to grow if you need a backup.
- Plan how you will notice and recover from a lost connection, OBS crash, or PC restart. Do not assume that a stream will resume automatically after every interruption.
- Evaluate a mini PC for the encoder available in its CPU or GPU, sustained output at your chosen resolution and frame rate, thermal behavior, wired-network availability, restart recovery, recording storage, noise, and price. These are practical selection criteria, not tested performance claims about any particular model.
Know YouTube’s long-stream archive limits
YouTube says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, so an always-on live feed does not guarantee one complete, replayable recording. YouTube also warns that DVR rewind may be limited on very long streams. Troubleshooting common interruptions
