A YouTube playlist can give viewers one place to find your scheduled livestream, its published archives, and fallback videos. It does not keep a broadcast running or automatically move viewers to another stream when an encoder or network fails. Treat viewer navigation, stream continuity, and recording backup as three separate parts of your plan.
What a backup playlist can—and cannot—do
A playlist is a shareable collection of YouTube videos and watch pages. It can help viewers find the right destination and browse related material, such as livestream archives, highlights, or an evergreen fallback video. YouTube recommends organizing livestream archives and highlight clips into playlists (YouTube Help: Create and manage playlists).

A playlist is not an outage redirect. It does not keep an encoder online, restore a failed connection, or switch a live player to another broadcast. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes testing rollover to a backup encoder; that is a separate continuity measure (YouTube live streaming tips).

Schedule the stream and keep its watch-page link

In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule stream. Create a stream or reuse settings. YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance explains scheduling and stream configuration: Manage live stream settings.

Keep the scheduled stream’s watch-page URL for promotion and add it to the playlist when YouTube makes it available for selection. YouTube recommends sharing the stream link in advance (Promote your live stream).

If you are using an encoder, retrieve the stream URL and stream key from YouTube and enter them in the encoder. YouTube says the stream key functions like a password and address: do not share it publicly. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room. Create and fill the playlist

Open an existing video’s watch page, choose More → Save → Create new playlist, give it a clear name such as “Live now and backup videos,” and choose its visibility. YouTube’s desktop help says a private playlist is visible only to its owner. Follow YouTube’s playlist instructions if the controls differ in your current interface.

Add the scheduled or live watch page when it can be selected, along with published livestream archives, highlights, and any suitable evergreen video that can serve as fallback viewing. A fallback video gives viewers something to watch; it does not replace the live broadcast.

After each event, check the playlist and remove unavailable or stale items so viewers are not sent to the wrong destination.
Public playlist creation has a daily limit across YouTube surfaces and the API, according to YouTube’s playlist help. That limit is unlikely to matter when creating one playlist, but it may affect automated or bulk playlist creation.

Share the playlist—and label the live destination clearly
Put the playlist link where your viewers already look: for example, in your channel description, a pinned post, stream description, or established viewing instructions. Share the scheduled watch-page link in advance as well. These links help people find the destination; neither one is a documented YouTube outage redirect.
Make clear which item is the live stream and which items are archives or fallback videos. YouTube’s guidance on promoting a stream is available at Promote your live stream.
Test actual stream failover separately
If your setup uses a primary and backup encoder, test the configured failover rather than assuming it works. YouTube’s live-stream tips advise stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup encoder. The same guidance recommends checking that the local archive remains intact and continues to grow, and monitoring stream audio and video (YouTube live streaming tips).

That test establishes only the rollover you actually configured and observed. It does not prove uninterrupted operation through a power failure, internet-provider failure, YouTube outage, or every other failure mode.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Because a continuous 24/7 stream exceeds that threshold, do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive to preserve the entire broadcast. YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup (Archive live streams).

Check that your local recording is being created and growing while the stream runs, particularly when testing encoder failover. Plan storage around your actual resolution, codec, bitrate, and retention period; without those details, there is no responsible universal capacity figure.

Check your stream’s schedule and viewer instructions
For recurring broadcasts, keep the scheduled stream information and viewer-facing links aligned with your programme schedule. YouTube also publishes live upload schedule tips. Confirm that the playlist points to current watch pages and that any failover arrangement has been tested; the playlist itself remains an organizational tool.
