n8n usually returns a screenshot response as JSON because the HTTP Request node is set to Response Format: JSON—or because the screenshot API itself sends JSON rather than image bytes. If the endpoint returns raw PNG, JPEG, or WebP data, set the node’s response format to File and choose a binary output field such as data. If the API returns a URL, base64 data, or a job status in JSON, handle that response according to the provider’s flow; changing n8n to File cannot turn JSON into an image.
First identify what the API actually returned
There are two different situations that can look alike in an n8n execution:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The API returned image bytes, but n8n handled them as JSON. Change the HTTP Request node’s response format to File.
- The API returned a JSON object. That object may contain a download URL, base64-encoded image data, or an asynchronous job ID/status. Follow the provider’s documented response flow rather than treating the JSON as a broken image download.
The screenshot provider and endpoint are not specified here, so the response format must be verified against that API’s documentation and the actual execution output. The n8n HTTP Request node documentation describes response handling; its current V3 node description lists Autodetect, File, JSON, and Text as response formats. The source is the rolling master branch, so labels can differ in an installed n8n version.

Run the node and inspect its output. The image should be available as binary data under the named field, not as ordinary JSON properties containing the image.

Binary file data is a different workflow data type from JSON fields. A successful download therefore does not necessarily show a readable image object in the regular JSON view. For deployments that need to manage binary data storage, see n8n’s external storage documentation.

Handle JSON responses according to their contents
| What the API returns | n8n handling | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Raw PNG, JPEG, or other image bytes | HTTP Request response format File; choose a binary field name | Pass that binary field to a file-aware node. |
| JSON containing an image URL | Keep the response as JSON to read the URL | Add a second HTTP Request to fetch the URL, with that download request set to File. Preserve any authentication the provider requires. |
| JSON containing base64 image data | Keep or parse the JSON response | Decode or convert the documented field to binary file data. Confirm the field name and encoding in the provider’s documentation. |
| JSON containing a job ID or status | Keep the response as JSON | Poll or wait as the provider documents, then download the completed image. |
These are common response patterns, not claims about a particular screenshot API. The API documentation determines which one applies.
Check status, headers, and error payloads
If File mode still does not produce a usable image, verify that the request succeeded and that the body is actually image content. An endpoint can respond with JSON describing an authentication error, rate limit, CAPTCHA, or other failure even when the request was intended to capture a page. Where available in your n8n version, enable the HTTP Request node’s full-response option to inspect the status and headers alongside the body. The HTTP Request V3 node description documents the node options; check your installed version if its controls differ.

- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
- Confirm the URL, credentials, required headers, and request parameters match the screenshot provider’s documentation.
- Check the HTTP status and response headers, then inspect whether the body is an image, JSON, or an error page.
- Do not assume that selecting File changes the API’s response type; it changes how n8n handles the response body.
Common causes and fixes
Response Format is set to JSON
Symptom: The node output is presented as JSON even though the endpoint returns image bytes.
Fix: Set Response Format to File, name the output field, and reference that binary field downstream.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The endpoint returns a URL in JSON
Symptom: The response has a URL or download link rather than image bytes.
Fix: Read the URL from the JSON response, then make another HTTP Request to download it as File. Include the authentication or parameters required for that download.

The endpoint returns base64 or job metadata
Symptom: The response contains encoded data or a job ID/status instead of an image file.
Fix: For base64, decode the documented field into binary data. For a job response, follow the provider’s polling or completion instructions and download the result afterward.
File mode produces an error payload or unusable output
Symptom: The node does not yield a usable image despite File mode being selected.
Fix: Inspect the HTTP status, headers, and body. Correct any failed request or provider-side response before passing the result to a file-capable node.

ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-call endpoint returns a screenshot or PDF; set the n8n HTTP Request node to File when you want the returned image bytes as binary data. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

For a direct image response, a cURL request looks like this:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
In n8n, use https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot as the request URL, send access_key and url as query parameters, and select File with a binary field name such as data.
