To run ads on a YouTube live stream, open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, turn on monetization for the stream, and choose how to handle mid-roll ads. Pre-roll and display ads are enabled with stream monetization; mid-rolls can run automatically, on a schedule, or when you insert them manually. You must be eligible to monetize live streams, and YouTube does not guarantee that every ad slot will show an ad.
Before you turn on live-stream ads
Your channel must be in the YouTube Partner Program and have accepted the Watch Page Monetization Module to earn ad and YouTube Premium revenue from live streams watched on the Watch Page or embedded in the YouTube player. You can configure ad settings without assuming every viewer will see an ad: YouTube decides whether an ad runs for each eligible opportunity.

Start a stream from the Stream tab, or select a scheduled stream from Manage.

Select Edit → Monetization.

Set Monetization to On.

Choose a mid-roll approach: Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual.
With monetization on, eligible streams can show pre-roll and display ads. Mid-rolls have separate settings, so choose a mode rather than assuming they will be inserted automatically.

Choose how mid-roll ads run

YouTube’s earnings comparison is a platform-reported possibility, not a guarantee for an individual channel or stream. Choose based on how much timing control matters and how interruptions fit your format, not on an assumed revenue outcome.

Delay automatic mid-rolls
In Live Control Room, use Delay ads to pause automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes. A five-second countdown appears before automatic ads resume. This control does not suppress mid-rolls you insert manually while the delay is active, so avoid manual insertion during a moment you need to protect.

Use Take a Break
Take a Break offers 1-, 3-, or 5-minute intervals for a temporary away screen. Eligible viewers may see ads during the break, so do not treat it as an ad-free pause.
What viewers see—and why ad delivery varies
YouTube states that ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads. Its systems decide whether to run an ad based on factors intended to balance viewer experience, creator earnings, and advertiser values. A viewer who does not receive an ad continues watching the stream; a viewer who does receive one rejoins when it ends or when they skip it. When a live stream is embedded on an external site with autoplay, YouTube says ads are turned off for that live stream.

Ads may be limited or unavailable if content is age-restricted or does not comply with advertiser-friendly content guidelines. Advertisers may also avoid content they consider misaligned with their brands. Turning monetization on is therefore not a promise of an ad on every break or revenue from every viewer.

Review live-stream ad revenue
To review live-stream and live-replay ad revenue, open YouTube Analytics and select the Live filter. Use the results to assess your channel’s actual performance rather than counting planned breaks as delivered ads.

YouTube reported that creators who chose live automatic mid-rolls saw, on average, over 20% uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour. This was YouTube’s comparison of channels with live automatic mid-rolls enabled against channels without them, averaged across 207 countries in January 2024. It is a historical platform-reported average, not a forecast or guarantee for an individual stream.
Optional physical control for manual ad insertion
YouTube’s live monetization help page names a YouTube plugin for Elgato Stream Deck that can insert ads while streaming. This is optional; the standard monetization and ad settings are in Live Control Room. YouTube’s guidance cited here does not establish which current Stream Deck models are compatible or whether a particular model is available, so verify both before purchasing.
