First identify when the problem happens
Separate trouble uploading the file from lag or freezing viewers see when the scheduled broadcast plays. A shaky connection can interrupt or slow an upload; it does not, by itself, explain playback problems in a file that has already uploaded. For prerecorded-stream lag, StreamYard points to the source video’s encoding and bitrate.

- During upload: Check whether the upload is failing, stalling, or taking unusually long. Connection consistency is relevant here.
- During playback: Check the file format, video encoding, bitrate, and HandBrake export settings.
Check the source file against StreamYard’s guidance
StreamYard’s prerecorded-stream help guidance specifies MP4 uploads with H.264 video and a maximum bitrate of 10 Mbps. The optimization guide says that reducing a video above that bitrate ceiling may prevent lagging or freezing. These are StreamYard’s published product recommendations and limits; verify the current help guidance if your plan or workflow has changed.

StreamYard’s help article for “Why is my pre-recorded stream lagging?” recommends re-encoding the video with HandBrake. Follow StreamYard’s current video optimization steps; the key settings it calls out are MP4, Align A/V Start, and Web Optimized. Keep the exported bitrate at or below 10 Mbps for the prerecorded upload.

- Open the source video in HandBrake and choose an MP4 output.
- Use H.264 for video encoding, consistent with StreamYard’s upload guidance.
- Enable the Align A/V Start and Web Optimized options described in StreamYard’s optimization guide.
- If the source exceeds 10 Mbps, reduce its bitrate to no more than that maximum when exporting.
- Upload the resulting file and check the scheduled broadcast. If it still lags, confirm the export settings and file limits for your StreamYard plan before trying unrelated network changes.
HandBrake controls and labels can vary by version. Use StreamYard’s linked steps for the current walkthrough rather than assuming a setting absent from your version has the same name.
If the upload itself is unreliable
For a file that will not upload reliably or takes too long, StreamYard recommends Ethernet when possible for a more consistent connection. Its requirements guidance says Wi-Fi works in most cases but may cause issues. A wired connection may help with the upload stage; it is not established as a fix for an encoding or playback problem after the video has been uploaded.

StreamYard’s separate live-stream testing guidance recommends at least 5 Mbps upload speed, with 7 Mbps or higher preferred, for live broadcasts. That is guidance for live-stream connectivity—not a bitrate target for a prerecorded file. The prerecorded upload’s stated bitrate maximum is 10 Mbps.

Troubleshooting by symptom
- The aired video lags or freezes: Re-encode with HandBrake, check MP4/H.264, enable the recommended Align A/V Start and Web Optimized settings, and reduce a bitrate above 10 Mbps.
- The upload fails or stalls: Check connection stability; try Ethernet if available, then verify that the file fits your plan’s size and duration limits.
- The video exceeds a plan limit: Check the current StreamYard plan limits and prepare a file that fits them. A connection change will not resolve an upload-size or duration restriction.
