You can rerun board game sessions on YouTube Live by sending a prerecorded session through an encoder such as OBS, or by using a cloud service to play uploaded videos. First confirm that your channel can livestream, then choose between scheduled reruns and a continuous loop, make the game easy to see and hear, test the stream, and check copyright claims after it ends. YouTube documents encoder streaming and copyright controls, but its cited Help pages do not expressly guarantee a 24/7 prerecorded rerun format.
Can I stream prerecorded videos live on YouTube?
YouTube supports livestreaming through several methods, including an encoder. An encoder is useful when you want to compose a scene from cameras, microphones, overlays, or captured gameplay. The official guidance explains livestream access and encoder workflows, but does not expressly promise that a prerecorded video may be run continuously as a 24/7 live channel. Treat a rerun as a programming and operations choice, not as a special YouTube approval.

Before planning a schedule, confirm that your channel is verified, has no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and meets YouTube’s minimum age requirement of 16 to livestream. Check YouTube Help’s current Get started with live streaming and Avoid restrictions on YouTube live streaming pages for the applicable rules and any channel-specific restriction.
Choose the rerun format
Scheduled episode reruns
A scheduled rerun has a defined start and finish. Give it a title and description that identify it as a replay, name the game and episode, and set expectations about whether chat will be live or moderated. This format makes it easier to present campaign or session context and to review each broadcast’s archive.

Continuous loop
A continuous loop is an operationally different choice: viewers may arrive midway through an episode, and the stream needs monitoring and a plan for encoder or internet failure. Label the stream clearly as prerecorded or a rerun so viewers do not mistake it for a live tabletop session. The official YouTube pages cited here do not establish guaranteed uptime or archive-capture duration for a 24/7 broadcast.
For either format, use consistent episode names and playlists so viewers can find sessions in order. If the channel presents the rerun as a live community gathering, arrange for someone to handle chat and interruptions.

How do I rerun a board game session on YouTube Live?
1. Prepare the recording and rights
Choose a finished recording you have the right to use, and decide what should happen at its beginning and end: a short slate can identify the replay, while a clean ending avoids an abrupt cut. A filmed session can include music, artwork, card text, video, or other third-party material. Rights depend on the particular game, publisher, territory, and use; do not assume that showing components or adding commentary automatically resolves a rights question. Check the relevant publisher’s current policy and obtain permission where appropriate. If music is not essential, omit it or use music you have permission to use.
2. Build a readable scene in OBS
- Open OBS and create a scene for the rerun. Add the session recording as a media source, then position and size it in the canvas so the board state, cards, and player actions remain legible.
- If you are presenting a physical game live rather than replaying a finished recording, add a camera as a video capture source. A stable overhead view is often useful for seeing the whole board; add a host view only if it does not obstruct play. An overhead mount or tabletop stand is optional, and fit depends on the camera, table, reach, and mounting method.
- For digital console footage, bring the game output into OBS. A capture device may be needed. OBS notes that Nintendo Switch family consoles can be captured this way when docked; Switch Lite cannot be docked for that approach.
- In the OBS audio mixer, check microphone and game or desktop audio levels. Keep commentary intelligible rather than letting game sound compete with it.
OBS’s Quick Start Guide covers adding sources, selecting audio devices, configuring output, and testing. Its Stream Layout Tutorial 1: Game Screen explains source placement and audio checks; its console capture guide covers capture devices and console compatibility.

- NYT WIRECUTTER: Featured in “The best board games”
- Works in groups from 2-12+ people. Great for large parties, offsites, family gatherings, and anywhere you need instant fun.
- 5 seconds to set up, 1 minute to learn, 30 minutes to play
3. Connect OBS to YouTube and rehearse
- In YouTube Studio, open the live control room and create or select the broadcast. Copy the stream key from YouTube’s stream settings into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key as a password: do not show it in a recording or share it publicly. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance describes the available methods and encoder use.
- Set OBS output and audio for the recording and connection you actually have; confirm the selected scene and source before starting. YouTube and OBS guidance cited here does not establish a single required bitrate, resolution, or keyframe interval for every channel and network, so use the current settings guidance shown in your encoder and YouTube Studio rather than copying a one-size-fits-all number.
- Run a private or otherwise suitable rehearsal before the first public broadcast. Check framing, focus, glare on cards or the board, audio balance, transitions, dropped frames, and the opening and ending slate. OBS explicitly recommends testing settings before the first stream.
- Start the broadcast in OBS and verify the preview and stream status in YouTube Studio. During a scheduled rerun, monitor for audio loss, frozen video, or an unexpected stop. For a continuous loop, decide in advance who will monitor it and how they will restart or recover it if the encoder or connection fails.
4. Review the recording after the broadcast
After each broadcast, check the YouTube Studio dashboard and the archive for Content ID claims. A stream that appeared uninterrupted while live can still receive a claim after it ends; do not treat a successful broadcast as proof that the archive is clear.
Will music or game art cause a copyright claim on a live rerun?
YouTube says: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If a match is detected, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder and issue a warning; leaving the matched content in place can interrupt or terminate the broadcast. A rights holder may need to allowlist your channel even when you have a license. Archived livestreams can also receive Content ID claims after the event.

For board game sessions, evaluate each game’s artwork, text, music, and other included material against the applicable rights and publisher policy. The available platform guidance describes YouTube enforcement, not a blanket legal rule about showing a board game or its components. For a specific game or territory, seek the relevant publisher’s current guidance or permission where needed.
What can go wrong during a rerun?
- You cannot start a livestream: check channel verification, the live-stream restriction history, and the age requirement in YouTube Help; channel access can be restricted.
- YouTube warns, replaces, or interrupts the stream: check for third-party content matches, including music or material inside the recording. Remove or replace material you cannot use, and ask a rights holder about channel allowlisting when you have a license.
- Commentary is hard to hear: check OBS microphone and desktop or game audio levels; reduce competing audio and rehearse again.
- The board is difficult to read: adjust the camera or recording crop, reduce glare, and ensure cards and player actions are not blocked by a host view or overlay.
- The stream drops or freezes: check the local encoder and internet connection, then follow your restart plan. The cited sources do not establish guaranteed uptime for continuous broadcasts.
- A claim appears after the stream: inspect the archive and the Studio claims dashboard. Live continuity does not establish that the finished archive is free of claims.
Run reruns locally or from the cloud?
With a local encoder, you keep direct control over OBS scenes and monitoring, but the computer and internet connection used to send the stream must remain available while the broadcast runs. A hosted service can handle playback from the cloud instead; it does not change YouTube’s copyright rules or remove the need to manage episode labeling and rights.
