Design for a phone-sized screen, then verify the actual live playback on phones and tablets before leaving a story stream running around the clock. Keep on-screen text focused, send captions to YouTube and check that captions do not cover essential information. YouTube does not specify a minimum text size, contrast ratio or story-card layout for this use, so treat readability as something to test—not a setting you can assume is correct.
Design each story moment for a small screen
Make the essential information easy to grasp
Give each visual moment one main piece of information. A viewer should not have to read a dense paragraph over moving footage or follow a tiny ticker to understand what is happening. Put supporting context into narration and captions where appropriate, rather than relying on small text as the only way to convey it.

- Open the stream preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room and review the output before starting the stream.
- Play the stream on an actual phone and tablet. Check both portrait and landscape orientations if your presentation is intended to work in both.
- Look for text that is difficult to read, obscured by player controls, or crowded by captions. Check the whole story moment, not just a still frame.
- Adjust the composition and repeat the check. A desktop editing monitor or preview alone does not establish that the content is legible on mobile.
YouTube’s creator guidance recommends verifying mobile access and checking the Live Control Room preview. It does not prescribe a minimum overlay size or a standard story-card design.

Send captions and test how they appear
Plan caption delivery before going live
Captions do not arrive automatically just because viewers can turn them on. YouTube says creators must send captions, either embedded in the video or through supported software. Its documented embedded 608/708 workflow supports one caption track; although the 608/708 standard supports up to four language tracks, YouTube’s current statement for that workflow is one track. Confirm that your chosen caption route can reliably deliver captions for a continuous stream.
Check captions in the live player
- Turn captions on in the live player on a phone and tablet.
- Check that the words arrive in time to follow the narration and that captions do not hide essential story text.
- Check the layout with captions both on and off. Make changes if the two viewing states compete with important information.
YouTube provides mobile viewers with caption controls, including options to change caption size and style. On iPhone and iPad, YouTube also documents creating a caption style through device accessibility settings. YouTube says “Show when muted” is available on mobile and tablet. Viewer controls help people adapt captions to their needs, but they do not replace the creator’s responsibility to supply them.

Choose stream settings for the viewing experience
Balance latency against buffering
Lower latency can mean more buffering, according to YouTube. It matters less when the creator is not interacting with the audience. For a mostly prerecorded, unattended story loop, decide whether a shorter delay benefits viewers; for chat-led segments, the value of more immediate interaction may justify prioritizing lower latency. Check playback stability as well as delay rather than treating one setting as universally best.

Decide whether viewers should have DVR
YouTube’s DVR option lets viewers pause and rewind during a live stream. Consider whether someone joining partway through should be able to catch up or revisit a story beat. If that behavior matters to the way the stories unfold, enable DVR and test the viewer experience.

Preflight the stream and protect its continuity
Check the picture, sound and mobile experience
- Review the Live Control Room preview before starting.
- Verify mobile access and inspect playback on a phone and tablet.
- Monitor audio and video quality, including after changes to overlays, aspect ratio, caption delivery or stream configuration.
- Repeat the mobile readability check whenever a change could affect what viewers see or where captions appear.
Leave upload-bandwidth headroom
YouTube recommends that the total stream bitrate stay within available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom. Shared networks can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder, so consider what else is using the connection. These are network-stability precautions, not guarantees of stream quality or text readability.
