How to Run a Pre-Recorded YouTube Live Stream with XSplit

Use XSplit to play a prerecorded video into a YouTube Live event. This guide covers channel eligibility, sources and playlists, stream keys, settings, rehearsal, publishing, and troubleshooting.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can broadcast a pre-recorded video as a YouTube Live event by playing it in XSplit Broadcaster and sending XSplit’s encoder feed to YouTube. YouTube Live Control Room handles the event and its final publication: for a scheduled stream, starting XSplit alone does not make the event live to viewers—you must preview the incoming feed and click Go live in YouTube.

Before you start: make sure your channel can go live

YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction during the preceding 90 days. If you have never enabled live streaming, YouTube says initial activation can take up to 24 hours. Check eligibility and enable the feature well before your planned broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance has the current requirements.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

You will also need XSplit Broadcaster installed, the video file stored on the computer running XSplit, a stable internet connection with sufficient upload capacity, and access to the YouTube account that will host the event. A webcam, microphone, capture card, or separate media player is not required for a file-only broadcast.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare the YouTube Live event

Create an event or schedule it

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live.
  2. To schedule the event, open the Manage tab and select Schedule stream. Set its title, visibility, and planned time, then save. Scheduling gives you an event URL to share and lets viewers set reminders.
  3. Keep the Live Control Room open; you will use it to check the encoder feed and publish the event.

YouTube Live encoder events are not the same workflow as YouTube Premieres. Here, XSplit sends a live encoder feed to a YouTube Live event, even though the content being played is prerecorded. See YouTube Help’s encoder setup instructions.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Add the prerecorded video in XSplit

Use one video file

  1. Open XSplit Broadcaster and select or create the scene you intend to broadcast.
  2. Choose Add Source > Video File, then select the local video. Arrange and resize the source in the scene so it fills the intended output.
  3. Use the source’s playback controls to start playback. Check both the picture and audio in XSplit before connecting to YouTube.

XSplit Support documents the Add Source > Video File route and lists common media formats, including MP4, but playback depends on the file and the installed environment. Confirm your specific file plays correctly in your version of Broadcaster. XSplit Support: Image, Video, and Audio Source.

Use a playlist for multiple clips

If the broadcast consists of several prerecorded clips, XSplit documents a Video Playlist source with continuous playback options. Add the playlist source, select the clips, and inspect its playback settings. Test the order, transitions or gaps, audio, and what happens at the end in your installed version; do not assume a single-file source will loop automatically.

Connect XSplit to the YouTube event

Try XSplit’s integrated YouTube setup

  1. In XSplit, select Stream, choose YouTube or the available YouTube platform option, and follow the setup wizard to authenticate and configure the output.
  2. Confirm the intended account and event are selected, then review the output settings before sending the feed.

The exact wizard screens can vary by XSplit version and account setup. XSplit’s getting-started guide describes choosing a streaming platform from the Stream menu and completing its setup.

Enter the stream URL and key manually if needed

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, open the event’s stream settings and copy its server URL and stream key.
  2. In XSplit’s stream output configuration, choose the option to enter a custom or manual destination and paste the URL and key into the matching fields.
  3. Save the configuration and verify it is associated with the correct YouTube event.

YouTube’s instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots, share it, or publish it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio. The current steps are in YouTube Help’s encoder guide.

Choose encoder settings that fit the video and connection

Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations as the baseline, then check the corresponding controls in your installed XSplit version. There is no single bitrate that is right for every file: match the output resolution and frame rate to the source and the quality you need, then choose an appropriate bitrate for that output and your sustained upload capacity.

  • Transport: Use RTMPS for encrypted transport when the encoder configuration supports it.
  • Rate control: Set constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Codec, resolution, and frame rate: Choose settings supported by the file, XSplit, and YouTube’s current guidance. Avoid upscaling a lower-quality source without a specific reason.
  • Bitrate: Select it for the chosen resolution and frame rate, and ensure the connection can sustain it with headroom. Refer to YouTube’s encoder settings for its current recommendations.

YouTube’s streaming tips recommend upload bandwidth 20% above the total stream bitrate. That is a headroom recommendation, not a guarantee: other devices and applications sharing the connection can reduce what is available to XSplit. Measure or test outbound upload performance under realistic network conditions rather than relying only on download speed. YouTube’s streaming tips explain its bandwidth advice.

Rehearse, then publish the scheduled stream

  1. Allow time to prepare. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time.
  2. Start the video in XSplit and confirm that it is actually playing, positioned as intended, and producing audible audio.
  3. Start the XSplit YouTube output. Starting the encoder sends the feed; it does not, by itself, publish a scheduled event.
  4. In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming feed preview. Check the picture and sound there, along with the event details and visibility.
  5. When you are ready for viewers to watch, select Go live in Live Control Room. For a scheduled event, this is the explicit publication step.

A private or unlisted rehearsal can help you check the exact file, settings, and connection without presenting an untested broadcast as the finished event. YouTube’s lead-time recommendations and event workflow are described in its streaming tips and encoder instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

End the event and check the archive

  1. When the program is over, select End Stream in Live Control Room.
  2. Stop the XSplit output so it no longer sends the encoder feed.
  3. Check that the YouTube event has ended as intended and that its archive is available.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer stream will be archived the same way; check YouTube’s encoder guide for the current limit and handling.

Troubleshooting common problems

You cannot start a live stream

Check that the channel is verified and eligible, and that it has no live-streaming restriction within YouTube’s 90-day lookback. If you just enabled live streaming, allow up to 24 hours for activation. Review YouTube’s eligibility requirements.

YouTube does not show an incoming preview

Confirm that XSplit is sending to the intended YouTube account and event, and that the output is running. If using manual setup, check the server URL and stream key for that event; if using the wizard, verify the selected account and destination. Re-enter the key privately if necessary—never paste it into a public support post.

The picture is missing, frozen, or the wrong size

Confirm the video file plays in XSplit’s preview and that its source is visible and correctly arranged in the scene. Check that output resolution and frame rate are supported and suitable for the source. If the file itself will not play, test a known-compatible file and consult XSplit’s media-source guidance; compatibility can depend on the file and system environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no audio or it is too quiet

Check that the selected video source includes an audio track, that source audio is enabled, and that XSplit’s audio meters respond during playback. Listen to the YouTube preview before publishing. A moving picture in the preview does not establish that the audio is reaching the event.

The stream drops or looks unstable

Check sustained outbound bandwidth against the full stream bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended 20% margin. Reduce output bitrate or quality if the connection cannot maintain it, and account for other traffic sharing the network. Verify that the chosen encoding settings follow YouTube’s CBR and keyframe recommendations.

The event is not visible to viewers after XSplit starts

For a scheduled stream, return to Live Control Room, inspect the preview, and select Go live when ready. Encoder connection and event publication are separate actions.
