The fault may be missing at the source, an incorrect input audio selector, an output without a mapped audio encode, or an ingest or playback issue. Work through the checks below in order.
1. Confirm the source actually has audio
Listen to or monitor the signal before it enters MediaLive. If the source is silent, downstream settings cannot restore its audio.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
If the source is AWS Elemental Link, check that the signal is locked and inspect the EncoderRunning metric. AWS says a value of 0 means the encoder is not processing the input; verify that a valid signal is being sent to the device. AWS Elemental Link monitoring guidance describes the metric.
2. Verify MediaLive is extracting the intended audio
In the MediaLive channel configuration, inspect the input attachment and its audio selectors. A selector identifies the audio asset MediaLive extracts; confirm that it points to the track, PID, or language actually present in that input. The selector requirements vary by input type: for example, HLS and other multitrack inputs may require identifying a PID or language, while RTMP is described as carrying a single audio asset. See the MediaLive input documentation.

If audio fails only when the channel switches to certain inputs, compare each attachment’s available tracks and selector configuration. For a multiple-input channel, AWS says to extract the same audio languages from each input and use identical selector names across inputs.
3. Check the output audio encode and mapping
Inspect the output used for YouTube. It needs an audio encode, and that encode must reference the intended input audio selector. A video encode alone can produce a picture without sound.

For AWS’s documented MediaLive-to-YouTube HLS example, the output group is HLS; in Stream settings, select Audio 1 and choose AAC. That example was published on 14 April 2021, so use it as a configuration example and verify the current console labels and available options for your channel. Do not apply its HLS settings automatically to an RTMP workflow. AWS Media Blog: streaming to YouTube with MediaLive.

Check that the MediaLive output group and protocol match the ingest workflow configured in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that the destination uses the intended YouTube stream URL and stream key. - PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
5. Use YouTube’s live preview to locate the break
Compare the source audio with the Live Control Room preview. If the preview is silent, continue upstream through the MediaLive output, selector, and input. If the preview has sound but a viewer’s playback is silent, check that device’s mute, volume, and playback path before changing the MediaLive channel. This comparison helps narrow the fault; it does not by itself identify a specific cause.
6. Confirm the audio format fits the protocol
Audio compatibility depends on the ingest protocol and intended channel layout. For the AWS-documented HLS configuration, YouTube HLS audio is AAC in an MPEG-2 transport stream. YouTube’s 5.1 guidance is a separate case: it lists AAC for RTMP and AAC, AC-3, or E-AC-3 for HLS, at 48 kHz and 384 Kbps. Those 5.1 values are not general stereo requirements. YouTube supports mono, stereo, and 5.1 configurations; consult its 5.1 surround sound live-streaming guidance when producing surround audio.

Quick fault-isolation guide
| Where to check | What to inspect | What the result suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Is audio audible before MediaLive? For Elemental Link, is signal lock present and is EncoderRunning nonzero? |
If the source signal is absent, changing YouTube settings will not repair it. AWS documents zero as the encoder not processing the input. |
| MediaLive input | Does the selector identify the actual track, PID, or language for this input? | Selector requirements vary with input type; a wrong or unavailable selection can leave the output without the intended audio. |
| MediaLive output | Is an audio encode present, mapped to the correct selector, and configured for the ingest protocol? | The AWS HLS example uses Audio 1 and AAC; RTMP should not be configured by blindly copying that HLS example. |
| YouTube ingest and playback | Does Live Control Room receive the intended stream and show audio? Is the configured ingest protocol the one MediaLive sends? | If preview audio is present but playback is silent, investigate the player or device path rather than assuming the channel encode is at fault. |
Common causes and fixes
- No audio at the source: restore the signal or source audio first; for Elemental Link, verify signal lock and
EncoderRunning. - Wrong input audio selector: select an audio asset that exists on the attached input and matches the required track, PID, or language.
- Audio encode missing or mapped incorrectly: add or correct the output audio encode and point it to the intended selector.
- Protocol mismatch: align the MediaLive output group with the YouTube ingest workflow; do not treat HLS and RTMP settings as interchangeable.
- Silence only in a playback device: use the Live Control Room preview to distinguish a stream-side problem from a muted or misrouted playback path.
