What you are deploying
Playwright MCP is a browser-control server that an MCP client can use to navigate pages and capture screenshots. The official Node.js setup supports headless operation and requires Node.js 20 or newer. Its documented standalone HTTP endpoint is http://<host>:8931/mcp. This guide uses an EC2 Linux host in Mumbai and keeps the service private. Choosing Mumbai does not by itself guarantee a particular response time, data-residency outcome, or compliance result; those depend on the workload and how the deployment is configured. AWS identifies the region as ap-south-1 in its Systems Manager endpoints and quotas documentation.
Prepare the EC2 instance and private access
Choose a Linux AMI and instance size
Launch an EC2 instance in ap-south-1 with a currently supported Linux AMI suited to your environment. Select CPU and memory capacity based on expected browser concurrency and page weight, then adjust after observing actual use. The cited AWS introductory walkthrough uses an older Amazon Linux 2 example; its sample AMI and instance size should not be treated as universal current recommendations. No instance-size benchmark is established for this workload.

Set up Systems Manager before connecting
For Session Manager access, the instance must be managed by Systems Manager and have the required permissions. AWS specifies an attached instance role with AmazonSSMManagedInstanceCore when default host management is not being used. Follow AWS’s current Session Manager connection guide and managed-instance setup procedure for the selected AMI and account configuration.
Session Manager provides an interactive shell and supports port forwarding. With the SSM prerequisites and network connectivity configured, an administrator can forward the MCP port without adding inbound SSH or MCP access to the instance security group. Consult AWS’s Session Manager documentation for the current CLI procedure and the local Session Manager plugin required for your platform.
Restrict inbound network access
Do not add a public inbound security-group rule for port 8931 when clients will connect through a Session Manager tunnel. Security groups control inbound and outbound traffic to the instance; AWS explains them in its guide to creating an EC2 security group. If you choose SSH rather than Session Manager, limit SSH ingress to the administrator’s known source IP range instead of allowing access from anywhere.

Install and start Playwright MCP
Node.js launch
After connecting to the Linux instance, verify that Node.js 20 or newer is available, then start the headless server:
npx @playwright/mcp@latest --headless --port 8931This follows the documented command-line launch shape. For repeatable production deployments, review and pin a specific package version rather than relying indefinitely on the floating latest tag. The standalone HTTP server example uses port 8931; the client endpoint includes /mcp.
Docker alternative
The official repository also documents a long-running Docker example using headless Chromium and port 8931. Its example binds the service inside the container to 0.0.0.0 and maps host port 8931; keep the EC2 security group and any host firewall restrictive so untrusted networks cannot reach it.

The example includes --no-sandbox in the project’s documented command; do not add or repeat that switch without understanding and accepting the container-isolation assumptions for your deployment. Connect an MCP client and capture a screenshot
Forward the private endpoint to your workstation
Use AWS’s Session Manager port-forwarding procedure to forward remote port 8931 to a local port on the machine running your MCP client. The exact CLI invocation depends on the current AWS procedure, instance identifier, and local plugin installation; follow the AWS Session Manager guide rather than copying a command for a different environment. Keep the client pointed at the forwarded local endpoint:
http://localhost:8931/mcpFor a client running inside the same private network, use an address reachable on that network and retain the /mcp path. The server’s documented URL shape is described in the Playwright MCP guide.

Ask the client to navigate and save a screenshot
Once connected, ask the MCP client to open the target page and take a screenshot. Playwright MCP documents screenshot capture as a supported interaction. The saved file location depends on the server configuration and MCP client; confirm the output path for your setup instead of assuming a particular default.

Treat MCP clients as trusted code
The Playwright MCP project warns: “Playwright MCP is not a security boundary.” Its getting-started guide also warns that browser_run_code_unsafe runs arbitrary JavaScript in the server process and is “RCE-equivalent — only enable it for trusted MCP clients.” Do not expose the listener to untrusted clients; use a restricted network path and limit who can operate the client. The configuration options guide describes secret redaction as a convenience, not a security boundary. Origin allowlists and file-access guardrails are also convenience defenses; they do not replace operating-system or container isolation, client authorization, and network restrictions.

Protect persistent browser data
Playwright MCP can retain browser state in its default profile mode. Cookies, authenticated sessions, and other persistent state are sensitive: use a separate, access-controlled profile and storage approach when login state is needed, and do not share a browser context across untrusted clients. Review the configuration options for profile behavior.
Keep the deployment reliable and right-sized
- Size from observed workload: browser resource use varies with page content, concurrency, viewport, and enabled capabilities. Monitor CPU and memory under your own workload; documentation examples are not performance guarantees.
- Plan process recovery: for a persistent service, configure restart behavior and logs through the host service manager or container runtime you operate. The cited documentation does not prescribe one production supervisor or availability target.
- Decide what to retain: choose a screenshot and browser-state retention policy appropriate to your data. No canonical retention period is established by the cited setup materials.
- Validate before handing it to an agent: connect from the intended MCP client, navigate to a test page, and confirm a screenshot is produced where expected.
Troubleshoot common connection and capture problems
