For a new MCP-first screenshot workflow, choose Playwright MCP. Its current documentation describes a dedicated screenshot tool for viewport, element, and full-page captures. The Model Context Protocol’s Puppeteer reference MCP server is archived and no longer actively maintained. That status applies to the reference server—not to Puppeteer’s screenshot API, which remains documented for use in your own code.
Which should you choose?
Choose Playwright MCP if an AI assistant needs to capture screenshots directly through a currently documented MCP server, especially when it also needs structured page information to locate and interact with elements. Choose Puppeteer’s library if your project already uses Puppeteer and you want to capture screenshots in your own scripts or application.

Do not treat the archived Model Context Protocol Puppeteer server as interchangeable with Puppeteer the library. Its maintainer said on May 29, 2025 that the server was no longer actively maintained. Puppeteer’s documentation separately points to chrome-devtools-mcp for MCP browser automation and debugging; that is a distinct server, not a continuation of the archived reference server. The maintainer’s status statement and Puppeteer’s documentation index describe those distinctions.

These are documented feature and maintenance differences, not a performance test. The sources do not establish a head-to-head winner for screenshot fidelity, speed, output size, or reliability. Capture a screenshot with Playwright MCP
Install and connect the server
The Playwright MCP installation guide lists Node.js 20 or newer and an MCP client as prerequisites. Its standard setup runs @playwright/mcp@latest through npx; the browser downloads automatically on first use. Follow the official installation instructions for the configuration format required by your MCP client, since client configuration locations and schemas can differ.
Ask for the capture you need
Once the server is connected, call browser_take_screenshot through the MCP client. For example, ask the assistant to open a URL and capture the full page, or to capture a specific element. The screenshot tool accepts these optional parameters:
target: an element target.type:png,jpeg, orwebp.filename: a file destination; omit it to receive the image inline in the tool response.fullPage: capture the full scrollable page. It cannot be combined withtarget.scale: CSS pixels (the default) or device pixels for a higher-resolution image.
If type is omitted, Playwright infers the format from the filename extension; if there is no filename, it defaults to PNG. The server can be configured to omit image responses with --image-responses=omit, which is useful when the client should not receive image data inline. Check the tool reference for the exact parameter schema and current response behavior.

Use snapshots to interact, screenshots to inspect
Playwright MCP is not just a pixel-driven screenshot tool: its interaction model uses accessibility snapshots to expose structured page elements and references. Use a snapshot to identify and interact with page controls; use a screenshot to inspect visual layout, canvas or chart content, or document a visual bug. As the official screenshot guide puts it, “Screenshots are for looking at, not for acting on — use browser_snapshot to get refs to interact with.”
Use Puppeteer when screenshots belong in your code
If your application already controls a browser with Puppeteer, its library API offers page and element screenshot methods without requiring an MCP server. The example below is an illustrative Node.js pattern using the documented API; install and configure Puppeteer according to your project before running it.

Common pitfalls
Full-page capture and a target are mutually exclusive
For Playwright MCP, use either fullPage or target in a screenshot request, not both. To capture a particular element, omit full-page mode; to capture the entire scrollable page, omit the element target.

A screenshot is not a reliable way to locate controls
When the assistant needs to find or operate a button, link, or form field, use Playwright MCP’s accessibility snapshot and references rather than inferring an interaction target from pixels. Reserve the image for visual inspection.

Puppeteer’s current API may document clipping, quality, or transparency options, but that does not establish those controls in the archived Model Context Protocol server. Verify the exact wrapper’s tool schema before depending on an option.
Inline image responses may not be wanted
Omitting a filename returns the Playwright MCP image inline. If the MCP client should not receive image responses, configure the server with --image-responses=omit; use an output filename when you need a saved image.

Choose by workflow, not an unmeasured quality claim
- New MCP screenshot workflow: start with Playwright MCP because its official docs describe the screenshot tool and current setup path.
- Existing Puppeteer codebase: use Puppeteer’s page or element screenshot APIs inside your own script or application.
- New Puppeteer-based MCP option: evaluate
chrome-devtools-mcpseparately; Puppeteer’s docs point to it for MCP browser automation and debugging, while the Model Context Protocol reference server remains archived.
No controlled comparison in the cited documentation establishes that either approach produces sharper, faster, smaller, or more reliable screenshots. Select based on the maintained integration and capture controls your workflow actually needs.
