For a straightforward static showroom, start by testing 1080p at 30 frames per second (fps) with H.264 video at YouTube’s recommended 5 Mbps, a 2-second keyframe interval, and AAC or MP3 audio. Those are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Mac mini or internet connection will sustain the stream.
Before you begin: confirm the channel and the archive you need
Enable live streaming early
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so complete activation and a test well before the showroom’s planned launch. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Plan around the 12-hour archive limit
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not establish automatic archiving for streams lasting 12 hours or more. Do not count on one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast to produce a complete recording. If you need a retained archive, verify YouTube’s current behavior and consider separate recording or shorter, segmented broadcasts.

Set up the Mac mini and YouTube encoder
- Choose the stream destination. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown there. YouTube describes the key as the stream’s password and address: keep it private. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder.
- Configure an encoder. Use an encoder that supports YouTube Live; YouTube’s documentation includes OBS among its encoder options. In its stream settings, enter YouTube’s server URL and key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. HLS is a separate ingestion option for supported encoders and can have higher latency; it is not necessary for this basic setup. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and HLS setup guidance.
- Start with a testable output. For a simple showroom scene, try H.264 at 1080p30, CBR, and 5 Mbps video bitrate. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. Set audio to AAC or MP3. These are YouTube’s recommended settings, not a universal best configuration. If the connection or encoder struggles, reduce the output and test again rather than pushing a bitrate the connection cannot sustain.
- Check available upload capacity. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. That means a 5 Mbps video stream needs more than 5 Mbps of available upload capacity once audio and headroom are considered. Test upload speed and stability, not just download speed, and account for other devices using the same connection. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream; see its streaming tips.
- Rehearse the real scene. Send representative showroom footage and audio before relying on the feed. Check YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages, verify the sound is audible and appropriate, and watch for dropped frames or connection warnings. A static product display may be less demanding than fast motion, but only a representative test can show whether the chosen settings work on your setup.
- Go live and monitor it. Start the encoder and confirm the preview in Live Control Room before starting the public broadcast. During operation, monitor image, audio, and stream health, and have a person responsible for responding to a failed connection, encoder issue, or power interruption.
Make a realistic continuity plan
A Mac mini encoder is a supported way to send a YouTube Live feed, but YouTube’s encoder guidance does not establish which Mac mini generation can sustain a particular resolution or codec. The research also does not establish model-specific macOS sleep or power settings, current OBS compatibility details, or an unattended failover method. Check current Apple and encoder documentation for your exact Mac mini and software versions rather than assuming that a particular setting or model is suitable.

For a showroom that must remain live, distinguish three needs: keeping the encoder process running, maintaining internet and power, and recovering after YouTube or the connection drops. A nonstop plan needs an operator or tested recovery process for interruptions; a computer-based encoder alone does not make the connection or broadcast interruption-proof.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
- Live streaming is unavailable: verify that the channel is eligible and verified, and that activation is complete. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: check that the server URL and stream key match the current stream in Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, reset it there and update the encoder.
- Warnings, buffering, or dropped frames: check actual upload bandwidth, other network use, and stability. YouTube’s suggested 20% upload headroom is above total stream bitrate. Reduce the output bitrate or resolution and rehearse again if capacity is insufficient.
- Video works but sound does not: confirm the encoder is sending an audio track in AAC or MP3 and that the intended microphone or audio source is selected and audible in the preview.
- The stream ends unexpectedly: check the connection, encoder, and power, then follow the operator recovery plan. Do not assume one long broadcast will also create a complete archive, particularly at or beyond 12 hours.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube showroom loop rather than a live camera view, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It plays the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, once per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded video, not a camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Start the free first day.
