To transition between prerecorded retail promos during a YouTube Live broadcast, prepare each promo as a separate scene in OBS Studio, choose a scene transition, and switch scenes while OBS keeps sending one continuous feed to YouTube. Use Studio Mode to preview the next promo before taking it live. YouTube receives the finished encoder output; the scene change happens in OBS, not through a YouTube playlist control.
Prepare the promo scenes in OBS
- Create one scene per promo. In OBS, add a scene for each segment, then add the corresponding video file as a source. Check the preview to confirm that the intended video and audio appear. This scene-per-promo arrangement is a practical workflow; OBS documents scene switching and transitions, not a retail-specific setup.
- Check the creative in the frame. Confirm that product imagery, logos, prices, offer terms, disclaimers, and calls to action are visible. Check audio levels and whether one clip’s audio should continue or change when the next scene appears.
- Choose a transition. In OBS’s Scene Transitions controls, select a transition and set its duration. OBS provides Fade and Cut from first launch and also documents Swipe, Slide, Fade to color, and Luma Wipe. The OBS guide explains these controls but does not prescribe a duration for retail promos. Choose a transition that suits the edit

There is no universally correct transition duration for this use. Judge it against the actual clips: a longer effect may cover more of the offer, while a very brief one may feel abrupt. Rehearse the transition with the outgoing audio and on-screen copy in place.

Preview and switch without interrupting the broadcast
- Enable Studio Mode if you need a preview stage. OBS Studio Mode separates the scene currently being sent to the output from the scene you are preparing. Select the next promo in the preview, check its opening frame and audio, then transition it to the output when ready.
- Make repeated switches predictable. OBS supports Quick Transitions and hotkeys. Set them up if they suit the operator’s workflow, and rehearse the sequence and any handoff between operators. A control pad is optional; it is not required to trigger OBS scene transitions.
- Keep the encoder feed running. Scene transitions change the program output; they are not a reason to stop and restart the YouTube broadcast. Monitor the outgoing result and audio through each change.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube’s Live Control Room and configure the encoder stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key into the matching connection settings in OBS. Treat the key as a password: do not share or expose it.
- Start streaming from OBS so the encoder sends its feed to YouTube. Wait for the Live Control Room preview and check that it shows the expected scene and audio.
- When the preview is ready and you are prepared to broadcast, select Go live in Live Control Room.
- Run the planned promo scene changes in OBS while the encoder continues sending the program.
YouTube’s encoder instructions describe this sequence: enter the stream URL and key, start the encoder, check the preview, and then go live. YouTube recommends RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP for encoder streaming. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Choose live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.

Rehearse the retail run of show
- Play through the promo order and confirm each scene opens on the intended frame.
- Check that the transition does not hide important prices, terms, product details, or calls to action.
- Listen for unexpected overlap, silence, abrupt cuts, or changes in audio level.
- Confirm the operator knows which scene is live and which is being prepared, especially during a handoff.
- Check the YouTube preview before selecting Go live, then watch the outgoing program during the event.
These are production checks rather than claims that a particular retail creative or transition has been tested.
What YouTube’s Take a Break does—and does not do
YouTube’s Take a Break control is an away-slate and ad-break feature, not a playlist or scene-switching tool for chaining retail promos. Its countdown does not automatically end the break; an operator must end it in Live Control Room. YouTube’s help page also lists eligibility conditions for a custom video used as a break overlay: it must be public or unlisted, allow embedding, and not be a Premiere, members-only, monetized video, or a video with a copyright claim.
