YouTube does not document a built-in giveaway picker, so you are responsible for keeping the entry process fair and honoring your rules.
Write the rules before the stream
Settle the details before inviting anyone to enter. YouTube requires creators to administer the contest and award prizes according to the official rules. Its policy says, “You’re solely responsible for your contest.” Read YouTube’s contest policies and guidelines and make the rules easy to find from the stream, such as in its description.

- Eligibility: State who may enter, including any age, location, or other restrictions. Check the laws that apply where you and potential entrants are located.
- Entry window: Give the opening and closing date, time, and time zone.
- Entry method: Specify the exact action or message that counts, whether multiple entries are allowed, and how you will handle duplicate or late entries.
- Prize: Describe it accurately, including any material restrictions on delivery or redemption.
- Selection and notification: Explain how you will select the winner, when you expect to do so, and how and by when you will contact them. Include what happens if they do not respond or are ineligible.
- Delivery: Explain how and when the prize will be awarded.
- Conduct and legal terms: Link YouTube’s Community Guidelines, explain that entries must comply, include applicable legal disclosures, and state that YouTube is not the sponsor and is released from contest-related liability.
- Privacy: Say what entrant information you collect, why you need it, how it will be used and retained, and how entrants can contact you about it. Collect only what is needed to award the prize.
YouTube says its contest policy is informational, not legal advice. Legal requirements depend on the organizer’s location, the entrants you permit, and how you run the promotion; check applicable federal, state, and local requirements rather than treating a template as universally sufficient.

YouTube’s policy requires a contest to be free to enter and warns creators to check local lottery laws. Do not require a purchase, Super Chat, gift, or other payment as a condition of entry. Do not make entry contingent on actions designed to inflate views, likes, dislikes, or subscriber counts. A viewer choosing to support the channel should not gain an advantage in the giveaway.

Choose an entry method viewers can follow
Use Live Chat for a simple on-stream giveaway
Chat entry works well when the rules can be applied to a clear message. Tell viewers exactly what to post, when the entry window closes, and where to read the rules. Keep the prompt plain and short: YouTube Live Chat does not allow special characters, URLs, or HTML tags. The chat is available on YouTube watch pages, not in embedded players.
YouTube’s Live Chat help page lists a limit of up to 11 messages every 30 seconds and up to 200 characters per message. These are platform limits, not a guarantee that every entry will be visible to you or equally easy to review. If the stream has heavy chat activity, subscriber-only chat, or moderation, explain any eligibility and review rules in advance. Do not promise viewers that every message will display identically.

Use an external form only if its trade-offs are clear
A form can make it easier to collect information needed to verify eligibility, but it adds friction and personal-data handling. Link to it only if your rules identify what data it collects, why it is needed, and how it will be used. Make sure the entry window, duplicate-entry handling, and selection method work for form entries as well as any other permitted entry route.
Run the entry window and draw as promised
- Announce the giveaway: State the prize, eligibility basics, entry instruction, closing time with time zone, and where the complete official rules are available.
- Keep the entry period consistent: Open and close entries at the times in the rules. If you need to change a material term, communicate the change clearly and apply it consistently; do not quietly change how entries qualify.
- Record eligible entries: Keep a record sufficient to apply the eligibility and duplicate-entry rules you published. For chat entries, be mindful that chat visibility and moderation can affect what you can review.
- Select the winner: Use the selection method described in the rules. YouTube’s documentation does not establish or endorse a particular picker, randomizer, or audit procedure. Whatever method you choose, make sure it actually considers the eligible entries and can be explained if questioned.
- Notify and award: Announce the result clearly, contact the selected entrant through the method stated in the rules, verify only the information needed to confirm eligibility and deliver the prize, and follow the stated response deadline and fallback process.
Do not mistake other YouTube features for a giveaway picker
YouTube live polls are for voting, not an entry list or random draw. YouTube documents polls with two to four options and a duration of up to 24 hours; poll results do not appear in chat replays. A poll is not a fair giveaway method unless separate rules and a complete eligible-entry process support the selection.

YouTube Giving and Virtual Items are separate platform features, not giveaway-entry mechanisms. Do not present donations, gifts, or virtual items as a way to qualify for a prize.
Troubleshoot common giveaway problems
- Entries are hard to distinguish: The prompt may be unclear or too complicated. Use one exact, short message and state the closing time and time zone before entries open.
- Some viewers cannot enter through chat: Subscriber-only settings or the viewer’s access to chat features may affect participation. State any chat eligibility condition in advance and consider whether a non-chat route is needed for your audience.
- You cannot review every message: Chat has rate and length limits, and visibility can be affected by presentation or moderation. Avoid promising that every entry will be seen; define a practical, fair review process in your rules before the giveaway.
- The selected entrant is ineligible or does not respond: Follow the disqualification and alternate-selection process stated in your rules; do not invent a new procedure after the draw.
- You need more personal information than expected: Pause before collecting it. Request only what is necessary to verify eligibility and award the prize, and ensure the privacy notice explains its use.
Keep the live broadcast running
For the giveaway itself, YouTube Live Chat and clear rules are the central tools; a separate production service is not needed just to accept entries or select a winner.
