How to Encode Videos for a YouTube Loop Stream with FFmpeg on Windows in India

A practical Windows guide to sending a prerecorded video to YouTube Live repeatedly with FFmpeg, including RTMPS setup, encoder settings, testing, and troubleshooting.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop a prerecorded video into YouTube Live from Windows, copy the current RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, then send the file to that destination with FFmpeg using a bitrate your connection can sustain. YouTube’s general encoder guidance—not an India-specific preset—recommends CBR, keyframes every 2 seconds (no more than 4 seconds apart), and testing with representative audio and motion before a long broadcast. A loop command can repeat an input, but it does not guarantee gapless playback or an uninterrupted YouTube connection.

Before you start

  • A prerecorded video file with audio and frame rate/resolution you know. Check that the file plays correctly from beginning to end.
  • An FFmpeg build for Windows that includes the needed input and RTMPS output protocols. Consult the FFmpeg project documentation for build and version details; the command below is illustrative, not verified against every Windows build.
  • A YouTube channel able to create a live stream, access to Live Control Room, and the stream key for the stream you will use.
  • A stable upstream connection. In India, as elsewhere, measure sustained upload capacity where and when you intend to stream; the official settings do not prescribe a separate India bitrate or endpoint.

Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it, include a working key in screenshots, or leave it in a shared command history or support post. Use a private or unlisted test stream where appropriate.

Choose encoding settings that fit the source and connection

YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for live encoding. H.264 is used in the example below because it is a familiar baseline, not because it is the only supported codec. Select a resolution and frame rate appropriate to the video, then choose a bitrate the sustained connection can hold. Higher resolution and frame rate generally require more bitrate. The figures below are YouTube Help’s published H.264 recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026; the page does not state a publication date. They are guidance, not a guarantee of stable streaming on a particular connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Input resolution and frame rate Minimum H.264 bitrate Recommended H.264 bitrate
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
480p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps

YouTube’s general settings also recommend constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of 2 seconds and no more than 4 seconds, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Confirm the current guidance on the YouTube encoder settings page before configuring a production stream, since recommendations may change.

Get the current RTMPS destination and key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream.
  2. In the stream settings area, click the lock icon to reveal the RTMPS URL. Copy the URL shown for that stream and copy its stream key from the same settings area.
  3. Use the current values rather than a URL or key copied from an unrelated tutorial. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and instructions for encrypting a stream using RTMPS.

Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide specifies a valid YouTube RTMPS endpoint and application path, with connections over port 443; the hostname is required for SNI-based authentication. Copy the complete URL from Live Control Room rather than trying to construct an endpoint yourself.

Send a looping file from Windows with FFmpeg

Open Command Prompt and adapt this schematic example to your own file, settings, and current Live Control Room URL. It is version-dependent and has not been verified against every FFmpeg build or source file. Replace every placeholder locally; never put a working stream key in published material.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "C:pathtovideo.mp4" -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2 -f flv "rtmps://CURRENT-URL-FROM-LIVE-CONTROL-ROOM/STREAM-KEY"

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Set the source path. Replace C:pathtovideo.mp4 with the actual file path. Keep quotation marks around paths containing spaces.
  2. Set the loop and playback rate. -re reads the input at its native rate; -stream_loop -1 is a plausible starting point for indefinitely repeating a single input. Confirm these options with the installed FFmpeg version and test the exact file, especially at the loop boundary. The option does not prove that repeats will be seamless.
  3. Match video output settings. In this example, libx264 selects H.264, -b:v 8M sets the target video bitrate to 8 Mbps, and -r 30 sets output to 30 fps. The keyframe options produce a 2-second interval at 30 fps. The example’s bitrate suits neither every resolution nor every connection; use YouTube’s table and your measured sustained upload capacity to choose values.
  4. Set audio output. The example encodes AAC stereo audio at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz, matching YouTube’s general stereo recommendation. If the source has no audio or needs different treatment, test and adjust rather than assuming this command fits it.
  5. Set the destination. Replace the destination with the exact RTMPS URL and stream key for your stream. FFmpeg’s output format flag is -f flv; the URL must still be the RTMPS destination supplied by YouTube. Keep input options before the relevant -i and output encoding/muxing options before the destination, since FFmpeg option order matters.

RTMPS means RTMP over a secure SSL connection in the FFmpeg protocol documentation. Whether a particular binary supports it depends on how that build was compiled. The example illustrates option placement, not a guaranteed command for every file, FFmpeg version, or network.

  • 【What You Get】Includes: HDMI Capture Card, USB 3.0 to USB-C Adapter, User Manual. Tips: Make sure your tablet’s OTG function is enabled before connecting. Test your HDMI device with a monitor first to confirm video and audio output, then connect to the Video Capture Card for recording.

Test before a long or public stream

  1. Start with a private, unlisted, or otherwise appropriate test stream in Live Control Room.
  2. Use the same audio and representative motion you expect in the real broadcast. YouTube Help specifically advises testing with similar audio and movement.
  3. Check the YouTube preview and stream health, including audio, motion, dropped frames, and any warnings. Monitor health and messages while the stream is running.
  4. Let the file complete a full loop. Inspect the transition and confirm that the stream continues. Repeat tests after changing the file, FFmpeg build, encoding settings, or connection.
  5. Stop the test, correct problems, and test again before relying on a long run.

FFmpeg continuing to read a looped input is different from YouTube guaranteeing an uninterrupted broadcast. The available FFmpeg documentation does not establish that arbitrary files loop gaplessly or that YouTube accepts every reconnect indefinitely.

Troubleshoot RTMPS and stream problems

SSL error

  • Check that the destination begins with rtmps and is the complete current server URL from Live Control Room. YouTube says an incorrect URL can cause an SSL error.
  • If needed for the endpoint or network setup, specify port 443 as YouTube’s RTMPS instructions describe. Do not otherwise edit or guess the endpoint.
  • Confirm that the installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. Consult that build’s documentation if secure connection setup still fails.

Connection timed out

  • Recheck the URL and stream key, and confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS.
  • Check that the network can reach the required RTMPS endpoint over port 443. Google’s ingestion guide describes the endpoint and application path requirements.
  • Test again with the current values from Live Control Room. A retry cannot fix an incorrect key, invalid endpoint, unavailable connection, or account-side problem.

Unstable video, dropped frames, or poor quality

  • Choose a bitrate supported by sustained upstream capacity, not just a brief speed-test peak. If the stream is unstable, test a lower bitrate or lower resolution/frame rate using YouTube’s table.
  • Verify that the selected frame rate, keyframe interval, and codec match the settings you intended, then check YouTube stream health again.
  • Test audio and motion in the preview; a still or silent clip may not reveal problems that appear with the actual program material.

A visible pause or jump at the repeat point

Check the source file’s beginning and end and observe a complete repeat in the YouTube preview. A loop option does not establish a gapless transition for every file, and latency settings do not solve loop-boundary problems.

Copyright and YouTube channel considerations

Sending a file as a live stream does not grant rights to its video or audio, and using FFmpeg does not change YouTube’s content rules. Before broadcasting, confirm you have the necessary rights to every component, including music, visuals, and any third-party clips. Review the copyright safety checklist. A live loop is also different from an ordinary on-demand upload; do not assume that repeating prerecorded material meets every channel or monetization requirement. Check YouTube’s current policies for your channel and content before a long broadcast.
