Encoder streams offer controls such as stream keys, latency, DVR, and auto-start or auto-stop; webcam and mobile streams have different options. The steps below cover the settings that matter before you go live.
Before you customize a stream
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. You must be at least 16 to stream. Available methods include mobile, webcam, encoder, and console; the controls differ by method. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and setup overview.

Open the Live Control Room
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live. This opens the Live Control Room.
- Choose an existing scheduled stream in Manage, or create a new stream. Select the stream you want to configure.
- Edit its details and settings. The available controls depend on whether the broadcast uses an encoder, webcam, mobile device, or console. YouTube’s Manage live stream settings page focuses on stream settings and scheduled events.
Set the stream’s details and audience options
Use the stream’s details to make clear what viewers will see and when. Available choices include title, description, privacy, category or type, schedule, comments, and ratings. Privacy options include public, private, and unlisted. A scheduled stream can appear as upcoming in subscribers’ feeds, where viewers may select “Notify me.”

Tags have a limited discovery role, according to YouTube: they are mainly useful for common misspellings, and otherwise play a minimal part in discovery. Prioritize an accurate title and description, a useful schedule, and interaction with viewers rather than spending time trying to optimize tags.

Choose and configure the streaming method

For encoder streams, YouTube’s Live Control Room can manage the stream key and URL, latency, DVR, and auto-start or auto-stop. A stream key is a credential for the encoder; YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep it private. If it is exposed, an owner or manager can reset it in the Live Control Room, then update the encoder with the new key. Details are in Manage live stream settings.
Pick latency for the kind of interaction you want
Lower latency can help when you need a more immediate exchange with viewers, but can increase buffering. Normal latency prioritizes less buffering. Webcam and mobile streamers cannot set latency manually; encoder users can choose from the available options. Check YouTube’s latency guidance for the current options.

Configure the viewing layout before starting
Documented Live Control Room workflows support horizontal and vertical output. For the vertical canvas, the available layout choices include center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked. Decide on vertical output before starting: YouTube says it cannot be added after the stream begins. Review the Live Control Room guidance for the workflow available to your stream.
Add a trailer or Live Redirect to a scheduled stream
Trailer
A trailer can play on a scheduled stream’s watch page before the event. YouTube’s stated eligibility is more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes. The trailer must be 15 seconds to 3 minutes long. See YouTube’s scheduled-stream settings for the current details.

Live Redirect
Live Redirect can send viewers to a Premiere or another live stream. To redirect to another channel’s live stream, you need that channel’s permission. YouTube’s stated eligibility for the sender is more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes. Confirm current conditions in How to use YouTube Live Redirect.
Use live chat and preview the stream
Before going live, check the Live Control Room preview so you can catch problems with the selected source or layout before viewers see them. YouTube recommends previewing before clicking Start Streaming; see its live-stream tips.

You can embed live chat on a website using an iframe, provided the embed domain matches the website’s domain. Embedded chat is not available on mobile web. See YouTube’s live chat guidance.
Troubleshoot common customization problems
- A setting is missing: Controls vary by broadcast method. Encoder-only options such as manually selectable latency or encoder stream-key settings will not necessarily appear in webcam or mobile workflows. Confirm the method and consult the relevant stream-settings guidance.
- The encoder will not connect: Check that it is using the current stream key and URL shown in the Live Control Room. If the key was reset, replace the old key in the encoder. Never share the key publicly.
- The stream buffers more than expected: If you selected lower latency for an encoder stream, consider whether normal latency better suits a broadcast where minimizing buffering matters more than immediate interaction.
- The vertical option is unavailable after starting: YouTube says vertical output cannot be added once the stream has begun. Stop and configure the layout before the next start.
- A trailer or redirect option is unavailable: Check the stated subscriber and Community Guideline eligibility conditions; for a redirect to another channel, also confirm that channel’s permission.
- Viewers cannot see embedded chat: Check that the iframe’s embed domain matches the website domain. Embedded chat is not available on mobile web.
