Before you do, consider whether an always-on public stream is appropriate for infant sleep: caregivers control the playback device’s volume and placement, and pediatric guidance advises keeping sound machines far from the infant, using the lowest practical volume, and limiting duration. A continuous YouTube stream is not a substitute for safe-sleep practices.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Confirm that Live Control Room lets you create a stream before investing time in setup.
- A computer running compatible encoder software, a stable internet connection, and the white-noise audio and any static visual you have rights to use.
- A plan for checking the broadcast, recording a local copy if you need a complete archive, and handling interruptions.
YouTube does not specify a particular computer model in its encoder workflow. Choose hardware that can run your encoder reliably; no specific configuration can be confirmed from the available guidance.

Create and start the livestream
- Open YouTube Studio and create an encoder stream. In Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream. YouTube provides a server URL and stream key for the encoder connection. The stream key functions like a password: keep it private, and reset it if you think someone else has obtained it. (YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.)
- Set up the encoder input. Enter the server URL and stream key in your encoder software. Select the white-noise audio source or file and, if the stream uses video, a static visual. Use audio and video you have permission to livestream on YouTube.
- Set stream quality and network headroom. Configure the encoder for the format and quality you intend to send. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend keeping total stream bitrate below available upload bandwidth, with 20% room above the bitrate. For example, if the encoder’s total bitrate is 8 Mbps, leave at least 1.6 Mbps of additional upload capacity under that recommendation. This is headroom guidance, not a promise that a particular connection will be stable.
- Start early and check the preview. Start the encoder before making the stream public or beginning the scheduled broadcast. In Live Control Room, check the preview and confirm that the audio is present and the visual is correct.
- Verify and monitor the live broadcast. Confirm that viewers can reach the stream, watch for encoder or network warnings, and check that any local recording is growing as expected. YouTube recommends preparing well before the event and monitoring quality.
Choose how to handle the 24-hour schedule
A continuous encoder session is not the same thing as a guaranteed complete archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. DVR rewind on very long streams may also be limited or unavailable. YouTube documents the archive and DVR caveats but does not prescribe a universally correct restart schedule or guarantee uptime. If a complete record matters, make and inspect a local recording rather than relying only on the YouTube archive.

Use sound carefully around an infant
A livestream does not determine the sound level in a baby’s room. The playback device, its volume, distance from the infant, and duration of use all matter. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) notes potential benefits in some studies of infant sleep machines, as well as concerns about sound output. Its practical advice is cautious: “if these devices are used, it may be safer to locate them as far away as possible from the infant, set the volume as low as possible and limit duration of use.” The guidance does not give one decibel level or duration that is safe for every speaker, room, and infant. Follow safe-sleep guidance independently of any sound choice: place babies on their backs for every sleep, use a firm, flat sleep surface, room-share ideally until at least six months, and keep soft objects and loose bedding out of the sleep area. Secure audio rights and set realistic monetization expectations
YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the content provider to hold the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of live content, including music licensing rights. Use original sound or obtain a license that explicitly covers the actual YouTube livestream use, territories, and duration, and keep the documentation. A license for personal listening or a downloadable recording may not establish permission for continuous public livestreaming. (YouTube Help: Livestream terms and conditions.)
Do not assume that an always-on loop will qualify for monetization. YouTube says live streams can be monetized by eligible channels through ads and some additional features, but channel monetization policies apply. Repetitive or mass-produced material may fall under the inauthentic-content policy, and the reused-content policy applies channel-wide. Eligibility and approval are not guaranteed. Troubleshoot common problems
- You cannot create a livestream: Check channel verification and whether the channel has had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days; confirm Live Control Room access.
- The encoder will not connect: Recheck the server URL and stream key in the encoder. Treat the key as a password; reset it if compromised and update the encoder with the replacement.
- The preview has no sound or the wrong visual: Check the selected audio source or file and visual input in the encoder, then confirm the preview before relying on the public stream.
- The broadcast is unstable: Compare total stream bitrate with available upload bandwidth and preserve the recommended 20% headroom. Check encoder and network status while monitoring the stream.
- The archive is missing or rewind is limited: A session over 12 hours may not be captured, and DVR on very long streams may be limited. Use planned shorter sessions if their transitions suit your listeners, and maintain a local recording when completeness matters.
- You receive a rights claim or cannot establish permission: Stop using the disputed audio until you confirm that your rights cover public YouTube livestreaming, the relevant territory, and continuous use. Keep license records.
