How to Stream a Radio Station to YouTube from a Synology NAS

By Freedom251 Team · · 5 min read

You can relay a radio station to YouTube from a Synology NAS only if you can run an encoder on the NAS (or another computer) that can read the station’s actual stream format and send it to YouTube. YouTube’s workflow uses an encoder, a server URL and a private stream key. Synology’s documented Surveillance Station broadcast feature is for camera video; it does not establish a built-in way to send an internet radio stream to YouTube.

Before setting anything up, confirm that the station permits rebroadcasting. A stream you can listen to is not automatically a stream you are allowed to simulcast.

What you need to confirm first

  • Permission: Check that the station allows you to rebroadcast its audio on YouTube, including the music and any other third-party material in the stream.
  • A usable source URL: Obtain the station’s actual audio stream URL, not just its website or player page. Confirm that your chosen encoder can ingest its format.
  • An encoder and an appropriate visual: The encoder must send audio in a format YouTube accepts. Depending on the encoder workflow, a radio broadcast may also need a still image or motion visual. The official guidance cited below does not specify a Synology command or visual setup.
  • A reliable network path: The NAS or other device running the encoder must remain online and connected for the duration of the broadcast.

The station, stream format, rights and NAS model are not specified here, so the steps below describe the YouTube side and the decisions to make. They are not a verified, model-specific Synology configuration.

Set up the YouTube live stream

  1. Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a stream. In Live Control Room, follow YouTube’s encoder workflow. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream into your encoder. YouTube describes the stream key as a credential that allows an encoder to send content to your channel, so do not share it or publish it. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  2. Choose RTMPS if your encoder supports it. Use the RTMPS endpoint displayed in Live Control Room and pair it with the corresponding stream key. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL; use the exact URL shown for your stream rather than guessing an endpoint. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
  3. Configure the encoder for YouTube’s requirements. YouTube’s published encoder settings include RTMP/RTMPS transport, H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval. For stereo audio, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz. Match the encoder’s output to those settings and to the capabilities of the source and chosen visual. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
  4. Start the encoder and check Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed and inspect the incoming preview and status before starting or promoting the broadcast. Starting the encoder sends the feed; stopping it ends transmission. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

What Synology’s documented broadcast feature does—and does not do

Synology documents a Surveillance Station Live Broadcast feature that can send a selected camera stream to YouTube using a YouTube RTMP path and key. The cited documentation is labeled for Surveillance Station version 8 and describes H.264 camera video. It does not document taking an internet radio URL as an audio source, so it should not be treated as proof of a radio-to-YouTube workflow. See Synology’s Live Broadcast documentation.

A software encoder running on a compatible NAS could be a possible route, but the exact package, Container Manager configuration, command line and recovery behavior depend on the NAS model, DSM version, source format and encoder. Those details are not established here. Do not paste an arbitrary radio URL into Surveillance Station or assume that a command written for another Synology model will work.

How to assess an encoder or NAS-based setup

Before choosing an implementation, check each item against your specific station stream and Synology system:

Synology 4-Bay DiskStation DS925+ (Diskless)
  • Supports drives on the model's official compatibility list
  • Up to 522/565 MB/s sequential read/write throughput supports stable data transfers.
  • Dual 2.5GbE ports provide fast network transfer speeds and increased redundancy.
  • Leverage built-in file and photo management, data protection, virtualization, and surveillance solutions.
  • Backed by Synology's 3-year limited hardware warranty.
  • Can the encoder run on your NAS and DSM version, or will it need to run on another computer?
  • Can it ingest the station’s actual stream format and maintain playback continuously?
  • Can it produce the audio format YouTube accepts and any visual output required by its workflow?
  • Does it support the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room?
  • What happens if the station source or your network connection drops? Can the encoder recover, and how will you notice a failure?
  • Are you comfortable installing, configuring and maintaining the encoder, and testing it before relying on it?

These are evaluation questions, not claims that a particular Synology package or encoder supports those capabilities.

Rights and YouTube interruptions

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder; continued use can interrupt or terminate the broadcast. YouTube also says that even creators who have licensed third-party content may need the rights holder to add their channel to its Content ID allowlist. See YouTube’s live copyright guidance.

  • Easy sharing and syncing - Safely access and share files and media from anywhere, and keep clients, colleagues and collaborators on the same page
  • Automated Backup Protection - Set-and-forget backups for Macs, PCs and mobile devices to multiple destinations including cloud and external drives
  • Home Security System - Record and monitor your property 24/7 with support for multiple IP cameras and remote viewing

YouTube’s livestream terms require the content provider to have the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation on Google services, including music rights, and to maintain applicable licenses, registrations, consents, notifications or approvals for the relevant territory. That platform requirement does not determine whether a particular station’s licence covers your YouTube simulcast. Confirm the scope of permission directly with the station or rights holder before going live. See YouTube’s livestream terms.

Common problems to check

  • YouTube does not show an incoming preview: Check that the encoder is running and that the server URL and stream key were copied correctly from the matching Live Control Room stream.
  • The encoder cannot open the station feed: Verify that you used a direct stream URL and that the encoder supports its actual format. A station’s web player page may not be the audio stream URL.
  • The stream is interrupted after starting: Check the encoder’s source and network connection, then review Live Control Room for status information. A third-party content match can also interrupt a stream; permission alone may not prevent this if Content ID allowlisting is needed.
  • Audio or video is rejected or does not appear as expected: Compare the encoder output with YouTube’s published settings, including H.264 video where video is used, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR, the recommended two-second keyframe interval and 44.1 kHz for stereo.
  • The setup instructions do not match your NAS: Confirm the exact NAS model, DSM release, Surveillance Station version and encoder before following model-specific commands. The camera broadcast instructions for Surveillance Station version 8 are not radio-source instructions.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded recordings rather than relay a station’s live internet audio, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera or an internet radio source.
