To run a 24/7 YouTube stream from a cloud server with limited monthly data transfer, send one continuous encoder feed to YouTube and set its bitrate low enough to fit your server’s allowance. At a constant bitrate, a stream uses about 324 decimal GB per month for every 1 Mbps it runs, before overhead and provider-specific accounting. YouTube handles viewer playback formats, so a normal YouTube stream does not multiply the server’s contribution traffic by the number of viewers.
How much data does a 24/7 YouTube stream use?

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Monthly decimal GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 324 × fraction of the month online
The calculation converts megabits per second to bytes and multiplies by 2,592,000 seconds, the length of 30 days. It assumes a steady bitrate and decimal gigabytes. It does not include protocol overhead, reconnects, telemetry, or differences between decimal and binary units, so leave headroom rather than targeting the advertised cap exactly.

| Sustained bitrate | Estimated transfer at 24/7 for 30 days |
|---|---|
| 1 Mbps | About 324 GB |
| 4 Mbps | About 1,296 GB (1.3 TB) |
| 6 Mbps | About 1,944 GB (1.9 TB) |
| 10 Mbps | About 3,240 GB (3.2 TB) |
These are calculated planning estimates, not hosting-provider quotes. If the stream runs for only 20 hours a day, multiply the estimate by 20/24. Actual transfer can vary with encoder behavior and provider metering.
Choose a bitrate that fits the data cap
Resolution and frame rate are the practical quality controls: choose the lowest combination that meets the stream’s needs, then budget using its video bitrate. YouTube’s currently documented H.264 recommendations include 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. At those continuous rates, the approximate monthly transfer is 1.9 TB and 3.2 TB respectively, before overhead.
YouTube’s recommended settings can change and vary by codec and format. Check its current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before configuring the encoder. The same guidance recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP.

Work backward from your allowance
- Find the provider’s monthly transfer allowance for the exact server plan and region.
- Determine which traffic directions count, whether allowances are pooled, and what happens when you exceed the cap.
- Reserve a safety margin for overhead and unexpected restarts.
- Use the formula to find a sustainable bitrate: divide your usable decimal GB budget by 324 for the approximate maximum Mbps at continuous 30-day uptime.
- Choose an appropriate resolution and frame rate, configure that bitrate, and measure actual usage during a test run.
Set up the cloud server and YouTube stream
You need a cloud server with enough sustained upload capacity to maintain the selected bitrate, an encoder that can run on its operating system, and an authorized YouTube channel. The server sends one contribution stream to YouTube. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams for viewer devices, so you do not need to send a separate copy from the server to each viewer.
- Confirm live-stream access. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and obtain its server URL and stream key.
- Protect the stream key. Enter the key in the encoder’s stream settings; do not publish it or share it. A key gives access to the stream destination.
- Configure the encoder. Use RTMPS where supported. YouTube’s current guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds). Supported audio codecs include AAC and MP3. Choose settings and bitrate from the current YouTube table for your codec and resolution.
- Test before going unattended. Start an unlisted test if appropriate, check the YouTube preview and stream-health messages, and test with audio and motion similar to the real content. Measure server transfer and confirm the stream remains stable at the chosen settings.
- Set up monitoring and recovery. Use a process monitor or service manager suited to your server and operating system so encoder failures are visible and can be recovered. Test your restart procedure rather than assuming the process will run indefinitely.
Check how your cloud provider counts transfer
A headline data allowance does not tell the whole story. Compare the selected plan’s allowance, included traffic directions, regional limits, overage treatment and price, sustained upload quality, and ability to monitor and restart the encoder. Check current plan terms for the exact region because provider accounting rules differ.
A concrete example is AWS Lightsail: its documentation says both inbound and outbound transfer count toward an instance’s allowance, but excess inbound transfer is not charged; excess outbound can incur fees. Allowances vary by region and are aggregated under specified rules. Do not assume another provider uses the same accounting.

A basic YouTube workflow needs an encoder and a contribution stream to YouTube. A separate stack that encodes, packages, and distributes video to viewers—such as a cloud video delivery architecture—serves a different purpose and has separate delivery traffic and costs. It is not required just to send a stream to YouTube.
Plan for long-running sessions and archives
A 24/7 broadcast and a complete YouTube archive are different things. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If individual archives matter, plan session endings and restarts before that threshold, test how your encoder and YouTube behave when one session ends and the next begins, and keep a local recording as a backup. Monitor both the live stream’s health and the recording file.
Troubleshoot data and stream problems
- The server is close to its cap early. Check measured bitrate, uptime, and provider metering units. Reduce bitrate or time online, verify whether inbound traffic also counts, and preserve a margin for overhead and reconnects.
- The video buffers or stream health degrades. The server’s sustained upload may not support the configured bitrate, or the network may be unstable. Check YouTube’s health messages and server upload performance; lower bitrate or resolution and run another test.
- YouTube does not receive the stream. Verify channel eligibility, the stream URL, the private stream key, and encoder settings. Check that the encoder is using a compatible codec and keyframe interval, then review YouTube’s preview and messages.
- The stream stops after an encoder failure. Inspect encoder logs and the server’s process monitor, then test a recovery or restart procedure appropriate to your software and operating system. Monitoring makes failures visible but does not guarantee uninterrupted service.
- A long broadcast has no complete archive. YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Use shorter planned sessions if archives are important and maintain a local recording backup.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos live on YouTube, StreamNeo is an alternative to managing a server and encoder. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud. It is YouTube-only and does not stream from a camera.
