You can run a 24/7 YouTube playlist from Google Cloud Compute Engine by keeping a Linux virtual machine (VM) online to play and encode your videos, then send its feed to YouTube Live. The playlist is not hosted by Compute Engine: the VM runs the playback process, while YouTube receives the live stream. A startup script can launch software when the VM boots, but boot automation alone does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast; monitoring and recovery must also be configured and tested.
How the setup works
The workflow has four parts: create a VM, configure playback and encoding software, connect it to a YouTube Live stream, and monitor the result. The VM needs to stay running and maintain an outbound connection to YouTube. You do not need to open inbound firewall ports just to publish a stream.

- Create a Compute Engine VM. Choose a Linux image, region, machine size, boot disk, and network configuration in the Google Cloud project where you want to run the service. Size the machine for the playlist and encoding workload you select; there is no universally correct machine type for every setup. Follow Google’s Compute Engine instance creation guide.
- Install and configure a playlist-capable player and encoder. The software must be able to play the files in sequence or loop and publish a live feed to YouTube. The sources cited here do not establish a validated command, encoder product, or systemd service, so confirm the exact configuration against the software you choose rather than copying an unverified command.
- Arrange boot-time startup. Google defines a startup script as a file containing commands that run when a VM boots. On Linux VMs, startup scripts run as root; public Compute Engine images include the Google guest environment needed to run metadata scripts. Put installation or launch logic in a startup script only after testing it in your project. See About startup scripts and Use startup scripts on Linux VMs.
- Connect the encoder to YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a stream. Copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder’s live-output settings. Start the encoder and wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room before selecting Go live. YouTube’s walkthrough is Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Verify and monitor. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and confirm the playlist advances as intended. Test what happens after a VM reboot, an encoder exit, and a dropped connection. A startup script launches software at boot; it does not, by itself, prove that the encoder reconnects or that the broadcast runs without interruption.
Choose stream settings that match your source and connection
YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion. Match the encoder output to the video resolution and frame rate you intend to send, and ensure the VM has enough reliable outbound bandwidth for that stream. YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations include:

Do not select a higher resolution or frame rate solely because the VM can run it: the source files, encoder workload, and available upload bandwidth all matter.

Keep the stream key and VM network secure
- Treat the stream key like a password. It lets an encoder send a feed to your channel. Keep it out of public scripts and shared logs; reset it if you believe it has been exposed. YouTube explains stream controls in Manage live stream settings.
- Avoid unnecessary inbound firewall rules. Google says the default VPC firewall rules block incoming connections and allow outgoing connections. Publishing an encoder feed normally requires outbound connectivity, not an open inbound port. Add ingress only if your chosen management or monitoring design needs it, and restrict access appropriately. See Google’s networking overview for VMs.
- Understand external IPs separately from firewall access. A VM having a public external IP does not automatically mean all inbound traffic is allowed; firewall rules still govern traffic. Google’s IP addresses documentation describes VM address options.
Plan for recovery, monitoring, and archives
A 24/7 design needs more than a process that starts once. Decide how you will detect a stalled playlist or unhealthy stream, how the encoder should restart or reconnect, and how you will know when the VM or YouTube connection needs attention. The appropriate process supervisor, retry policy, and alerting method depend on the implementation; validate them rather than assuming a startup script supplies them.
YouTube’s encoder help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That statement does not establish that a longer continuous 24/7 broadcast will be archived in full. If you need recordings, plan a separate recording and retention approach, and confirm current behavior in Live Control Room before relying on an archive.

Also confirm that you have the rights to stream every playlist item. A cloud VM does not change copyright obligations or guarantee that YouTube will permit, keep available, or monetize a particular stream. Review YouTube’s applicable policies for your content and channel.
Estimate Google Cloud costs for your configuration
There is no single defensible VM price for this workflow without knowing the project region, machine type, disk size, runtime, and network use. Compute Engine charges depend on the resources and billing assumptions you select, so use the current Google Cloud pricing information for your chosen configuration before deploying. Include the always-on VM and boot disk in the estimate, and account for network requirements relevant to your workload. Not by itself. It runs commands when the VM boots; process supervision and reconnect behavior depend on the implementation and must be configured and tested.
