Before you start
Confirm your channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so check access before your planned launch. See YouTube’s getting-started guidance.

Prepare audio and video you are allowed to use
Keep the cricket-and-rain recording on the computer that will run OBS. OBS Media Source supports common audio and video files, including MP4 and WAV, and can play a local file. Check that the file contains the picture and sound you intend to broadcast. Use recordings you own or have permission to stream; the sound of rain or crickets does not itself establish rights to a particular recording.

Set up the repeating video in OBS
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, choose an existing scene or create one for the ambience stream.
- Add the local recording. In the Sources panel, select + → Media Source. Give it a recognizable name, select the local file, and confirm.
- Enable the loop. Open the Media Source properties and check Loop. OBS describes this option as restarting the media file when playback reaches its end.
- Check picture and sound. Play the source in OBS and confirm both are present. Let the file finish during a test so you can verify that it starts again as intended.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live, then open the Stream tab. Create a stream or schedule one. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover this workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into OBS’s streaming settings. The key is a credential that identifies where OBS sends the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Treat it like a password: do not share it or publish it.
- Start streaming from OBS. Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room, then check the image and sound. Click Go live in YouTube only after the preview looks and sounds right.
YouTube describes an encoder as a tool that converts video into a digital format for streaming. Its guidance recommends testing with similar audio and movement and monitoring stream health during the broadcast; see YouTube’s streaming tips and live streaming tips.
Keep the stream stable and plan its duration
Allow upload headroom
YouTube recommends keeping roughly 20% more upload capacity available than the stream’s bitrate. For example, if your chosen stream bitrate is 5 Mbps, aim for about 6 Mbps of available upload capacity under streaming conditions. This is headroom, not a guarantee: other devices using the connection or network interruptions can still affect stream health. YouTube also recommends testing and monitoring the stream.

Keep the encoder and connection running
With the OBS method, the computer running OBS and the network equipment must stay powered and connected. A computer sleep setting, OBS closing, a power interruption, or a failed internet connection can interrupt the broadcast. A dedicated computer is optional, not a requirement established by YouTube’s encoder guidance. A UPS might help bridge brief power interruptions, but it is optional and cannot guarantee continuity.
Decide how to handle YouTube’s archive threshold
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is an archive warning, not a stated rule that YouTube ends every stream at 12 hours. If having a replay matters, end the session before it reaches 12 hours, save a local recording as backup, and start another stream. YouTube also notes that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR settings guidance.

Troubleshooting common problems
- You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification and restrictions, then allow for up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- The preview does not appear: Confirm OBS is sending to the stream URL and key shown for the active stream in Live Control Room. Check that OBS has actually started streaming.
- The video plays once and stops: Reopen the Media Source properties and verify that Loop is enabled. Test playback through the file’s end.
- There is no picture or sound: Confirm the selected file includes the missing media, and check the OBS preview and audio meters before starting the public broadcast.
- The stream health is poor or the feed drops: Check available upload capacity against the bitrate, aiming for YouTube’s roughly 20% headroom recommendation. Reduce competing network use and monitor stream health; the computer, network or platform may still be interrupted.
- The replay is missing after a very long session: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. For future sessions, stop before that threshold and keep a local recording if the archive matters.

Use a recording you own or are licensed to broadcast, including its audio and any visuals. A loop setting only repeats a file; it does not grant permission to use it or establish that a channel qualifies for monetization. YouTube’s setup guidance does not settle whether repetitive ambience streams qualify for monetization, so do not assume that going live makes a recording eligible.
