How to Run a 24/7 YouTube Bhajan Stream Using OBS on a Laptop

A practical OBS setup for a looping YouTube bhajan stream, with encoder settings, rights checks, monitoring steps, and a plan for long broadcasts.

You can run a YouTube bhajan stream from a laptop by creating an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, sending it from OBS, and looping a playlist in your OBS scene. The laptop must remain powered on, connected to the internet, and running OBS for the stream to continue; no universal laptop specification or guaranteed 24/7 runtime is established. Before going live, confirm YouTube eligibility, test the upload connection and audio, secure music rights, and decide how to handle broadcasts longer than 12 hours.

What you need before setting up OBS

  • A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube requires this for encoder streaming. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup requirements.
  • OBS installed on a laptop that can play your video files and encode the chosen settings. No official minimum laptop specification or assured continuous runtime is established; test the actual machine and connection before relying on them.
  • A playlist of bhajan videos and visuals you have the rights to broadcast and archive.
  • A stable upload connection tested at the intended resolution and bitrate, plus sufficient local storage if you plan to record a backup.

Prepare the YouTube encoder stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming if you have not used it before. Account eligibility and activation may affect when you can start; check the live-streaming page for your channel’s status.
  2. Create or schedule a live stream and choose the encoder option. In the stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key for OBS.
  3. Keep the key private: YouTube describes stream keys as password-like credentials. Do not show it in screenshots, overlays, or public instructions. Reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed. See Manage live stream settings.

Configure OBS and build a looping bhajan playlist

  1. Open OBS and go to Settings > Stream. Select YouTube as the service, then enter the stream key and, if OBS requests it, the server or stream URL supplied by YouTube. Prefer RTMPS where supported; YouTube recommends it as the encrypted version of RTMP. Encoder guidance: YouTube live encoder settings.
  2. In the OBS Sources panel, add the video or media source for your first bhajan. Add the remaining videos to the scene or use a playlist-capable media workflow that advances through your files and loops them. Check that the playlist actually returns to the first item rather than stopping after the final file.
  3. Set the scene’s visuals, such as a still image or devotional artwork, and ensure that any image or video assets are also cleared for use. Avoid displaying private information or the stream key.
  4. Under OBS Settings > Output, choose an H.264 video encoder if available and set the bitrate and rate control to match YouTube’s guidance below. Under Settings > Video, set the output resolution and frame rate you intend to stream. Exact menu labels can vary by OBS version and encoder.
  5. Under OBS Settings > Audio, check the correct audio device and sample rate. YouTube accepts AAC or MP3 audio; verify that the bhajan audio is clear, not clipped, and not duplicated through multiple audio sources.
  6. Start OBS preview and play representative sections from the beginning, middle, and end of the playlist. Confirm transitions, sound levels, and that the loop behaves as intended before starting the public stream.

Choose a starting video setting and bitrate

For a modest devotional visual, 720p at 30 frames per second is a practical starting point to test. YouTube lists 4 Mbps as its recommended H.264 video bitrate for 720p30 and 0.4 Mbps as the minimum. Those are platform guidance figures, not a promise that a particular laptop or internet connection can sustain a continuous stream.

Setting Starting value or guidance What to check
Resolution and frame rate 720p30 Use the same output resolution and frame rate in OBS that you intend to send; test the image and laptop load.
Video encoding H.264 Choose an encoder supported by your OBS setup and avoid settings that overload the laptop.
Video bitrate 4 Mbps recommended; 0.4 Mbps minimum for 720p30 H.264, per YouTube’s encoder guidance Use a reliable upload connection with headroom and inspect YouTube’s stream-health feedback.
Rate control CBR recommended Set constant bitrate in OBS if the selected encoder exposes this control.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds Set the interval in the encoder’s output settings.
Audio codec AAC or MP3 Listen for dropouts, clipping, silence, or unexpected source changes.
Connection RTMPS preferred where supported Use the secure stream endpoint YouTube provides or recommends for the encoder.

If you increase resolution or frame rate, reassess the bitrate, upload capacity, and encoding load rather than assuming the 720p30 figure applies. The appropriate setting depends on your actual scene, connection, and laptop; test it under realistic conditions.

Preview, start, and monitor the broadcast

  1. In OBS, click Start Streaming. Wait for the incoming feed to appear in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
  2. Check YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages. Confirm the picture is stable and that audio is present before taking the event live.
  3. In Live Control Room, start the YouTube live event when the preview is ready. Keep OBS open and the laptop awake, powered, and connected while the stream is meant to remain on air.
  4. During operation, monitor video and audio quality, YouTube’s health indicators, and the playlist’s progress. If recording locally, check that the archive file is growing and that the laptop has enough available storage.
  5. Keep a person responsible for responding to failures. A laptop, power supply, network connection, OBS process, or source file can fail; YouTube and OBS guidance does not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 delivery from a laptop.

Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive and DVR limits

A single live stream lasting more than 12 hours may not be captured in YouTube’s archive at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If replay archives or rewind matter, plan separate broadcasts shorter than that threshold and verify your chosen procedure; do not assume transitions between sessions will be seamless. Keep a local recording as a separate backup where practical.

Clear rights for the bhajans and visuals

Devotional, traditional, or religious subject matter does not automatically make a recording free to use. Check rights for the specific recording, composition, performance, and visual assets in the places where you will stream and archive them. YouTube scans live audio and video for third-party matches; it can warn, interrupt, replace, or terminate a stream when a match is detected. A license alone may not prevent an interruption if the rightsholder has not allowlisted your channel in Content ID. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance and ask the relevant rightsholder about live-stream and archive permissions and Content ID allowlisting.

Troubleshoot common interruptions

Symptom Likely cause What to do
YouTube does not show an incoming preview Wrong stream key or URL, encoder not streaming, or live access not enabled Check channel eligibility, confirm the selected event and stream key in YouTube Studio, and verify OBS is connected to the matching stream settings.
Stream health reports unstable delivery or viewers see buffering Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuating for the selected bitrate Test the connection, reduce output demands if needed, and retest at the intended bitrate before relying on the stream.
Video stutters, but the connection appears stable The laptop may be struggling to play or encode the scene at the chosen settings Check OBS and system performance, simplify the scene, and test a lower resolution or frame rate. No single laptop specification guarantees a fix.
Audio is silent, clipped, or doubled Wrong audio device, mismatched source routing, or excessive levels Check OBS audio meters and device selection, listen to a test recording, and remove duplicate audio paths or reduce levels.
The playlist stops or repeats incorrectly Looping or playlist advancement is not configured as expected, or a media file has an issue Test every item and the transition from the final item back to the first before going live; replace or repair files that fail in playback.
The stream is interrupted after a copyright match A third-party recording, composition, performance, or visual triggered YouTube’s matching systems Use material you are authorized to broadcast and archive; contact the rightsholder about the relevant permission and channel allowlisting.
The live replay is missing or rewind is unavailable The stream exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive or DVR guidance threshold Use shorter sessions when YouTube replay or DVR is important, and keep a local recording if you need another copy.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a laptop and home connection to stay on, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded video in the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.

  • Nothing has to stay running at home; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • Each slot streams uploaded material as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot without re-encoding or quality tiers.
  • The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. A monthly option is $9.99 per month.
