AWS MediaLive supports UHD output up to 2160 vertical resolution with H.264/AVC or H.265/HEVC, but the published AWS Live Streaming solution profiles top out at 1080p. A 24/7 UHD deployment therefore needs a custom MediaLive configuration, verified regional capacity, tested redundancy and a cost estimate built for your actual channel—not the reference solution’s default ladder.

Choose the architecture and define the service target
AWS’s reference live-streaming architecture sends contribution feeds to MediaLive for real-time encoding, passes adaptive-bitrate (ABR) outputs to MediaPackage, and uses CloudFront to deliver playback to viewers. It demonstrates two feeds processed in parallel for redundancy and MediaPackage endpoints for HLS, DASH and CMAF delivery. That is a useful architecture pattern, not a ready-to-deploy UHD channel profile: its published encoding ladders are SD/HD, with profiles at 540p, 720p and 1080p at 30 fps.

Reference architecture components
| Component | Role in the channel | Decision to validate |
|---|---|---|
| Contribution feed and input | Supplies the live video and audio that MediaLive will encode. | Confirm the input type and source format match the upstream workflow and are supported in the selected Region. |
| MediaLive | Encodes the live source into the configured output or ABR ladder. | Build a channel-specific UHD configuration; do not mistake the reference solution’s 1080p profiles for UHD. |
| MediaPackage | In the reference design, ingests the MediaLive output and exposes HLS, DASH and CMAF endpoints. | Use it when its packaging and origin capabilities suit the delivery requirements. |
| CloudFront | Distributes playback from configured origins to viewers. | Set the origin, cache behavior and authorization path for live manifests and segments deliberately. |
Set a real availability target
For a channel that must stay on air, plan the source and processing paths as well as the delivery stack. AWS’s reference solution demonstrates two input feeds and parallel MediaLive processing. Your own design still needs independent, appropriately provisioned source paths and a defined failover approach. Confirm how the selected input type supports failover, then test failure and recovery behavior in your environment before relying on it in production. Redundancy can add processing and delivery costs, so include it in the design and estimate.
Prepare and validate the contribution feed
Start with the feed you can actually deliver continuously. Establish whether it is already UHD, what resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate it uses, and whether it carries the audio tracks, captions or alternate language tracks required downstream. Choose an input compatible with that workflow. The AWS Live Streaming solution guide lists URL pull, RTMP pull or push, RTP push and MediaConnect as input options; check current support for the chosen option and Region before building around it.

Input and redundancy checklist
- Document the source’s resolution, frame rate, video codec, bitrate, audio format and any caption or alternate-track requirements.
- Choose an input type that matches the upstream source and operational workflow; do not assume every input type works in every Region or account.
- For a redundant channel, arrange distinct primary and backup contribution paths where the workflow allows, and establish how the system detects loss and switches or recovers.
- Confirm that the required AWS services are available in the intended Region and that the account has enough quota for the selected design.
- Test source loss, restoration and failover behavior with the planned feed format before production launch.
Configure MediaLive for UHD output
MediaLive supports UHD/4K output at vertical resolutions above 1080 up to and including 2160. AWS documents H.264/AVC and H.265/HEVC for UHD output; AV1 is documented for SD and HD, not UHD. Select the codec based on your workflow and the devices your audience uses: the AWS documentation establishes UHD support for H.264 and H.265 but does not establish universal device compatibility or one universally preferable codec.

Build the UHD output and any companion renditions as a channel-specific configuration. The AWS Live Streaming solution’s published profiles are progressive 30 fps examples at 540p, 720p and 1080p. They illustrate an adaptive bitrate ladder, but they are not a UHD profile and should not be described as one. AWS’s MediaLive feature-rules documentation states: “Ultra-high definition (UHD or 4K) video is supported with H.264 and H.265.”

Choose the output ladder
Decide whether the service should provide only a UHD rendition or a UHD rendition plus lower-resolution versions. A UHD-only output may suit a narrowly controlled playback environment, while a multi-rendition ladder can serve devices and network connections that cannot sustain UHD. The sources reviewed establish MediaLive’s UHD capability but do not prescribe a single ladder for a 24/7 UHD channel. Set rendition resolutions, frame rates, codecs and bitrates for your source, player population and delivery budget, then validate the resulting playback on representative devices and connections.
Check UHD-specific limits
- A MediaLive channel using a CDI input can have a maximum of one UHD output encode.
- The maximum number of MediaLive channels with UHD is controlled by a changeable account quota. Check the quota in the account and request an increase if the design requires it.
- Check the required service and input availability in the target Region; a published capability does not guarantee availability for every Region, account or configuration.
Package, authorize and deliver playback
In the AWS reference design, MediaLive sends ABR output to MediaPackage, which provides HLS, DASH and CMAF endpoints; CloudFront is then configured with MediaPackage endpoints as origins. Choose formats and playback behavior to match the real device, player, codec, DRM and authorization requirements rather than assuming every viewer can play every UHD rendition.

Protect the MediaPackage origin path
The reference implementation authorizes playback through CloudFront: CloudFront sends a CDN identifier header, and MediaPackage fulfills requests through that authorized path. The identifier is stored in AWS Secrets Manager. Configure the origin and cache behavior for live manifests and segments, and protect the identifier and other credentials as secrets. Do not expose an origin path that bypasses the intended authorization model.
When to use MediaPackage
Use MediaPackage when you need its packaging formats or origin features. CloudFront documentation also describes serving already formatted outputs from a scalable origin, so a design with preformatted outputs may be an option when it better fits the workflow. Choose between these approaches based on required formats, origin capabilities, authorization and operational complexity; the reference architecture is not a requirement that every AWS live channel use identical packaging.

Deploy and operate the channel continuously
The AWS Live Streaming solution deploys supporting services through CloudFormation and includes CloudFront distributions and a demo player bucket. AWS describes the template as customizable and provides a deployment-time estimate, but deploying that template does not validate a production UHD profile, prove continuous availability or replace production readiness work. Treat it as a starting point to adapt and review.
Production launch sequence
- Confirm the Region and account. Verify MediaLive, MediaPackage and any MediaConnect services used are available in the target Region. Inspect account quotas for UHD MediaLive channels, MediaPackage channels and endpoints, and any other constrained resources. Published defaults may not match your account.
- Provision the contribution paths. Configure the selected input type and the intended primary and backup feeds. Confirm the source format and continuity against the channel design.
- Build the MediaLive channel. Configure the actual UHD output and chosen lower-resolution companions, if any. Validate codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio and caption requirements against the upstream feed and receiving workflow.
- Configure packaging and origins. If using the reference pattern, connect MediaLive ABR output to MediaPackage, create the needed HLS, DASH or CMAF endpoints, and set CloudFront origins and cache behavior.
- Apply origin authorization. If following the reference authorization pattern, configure CloudFront to send the CDN identifier header and store the identifier in Secrets Manager. Verify that the intended playback path works and direct unauthorized origin requests are not accepted.
- Validate end-to-end playback. Test the actual manifests and segments with the intended player types, codecs, resolution ladder and network conditions. Exercise source loss and recovery, and verify the viewer-facing behavior for the failure cases your availability target covers.
- Run continuously and monitor cost. Include the always-on state and redundancy in operating plans. Set a budget and monitoring plan using AWS Cost Explorer and review actual service usage after launch.
Estimate the cost of a 24/7 UHD design
AWS’s live-streaming cost examples are assumption-based SD/HD illustrations, not a quote for round-the-clock UHD. AWS cautions that simplifying assumptions can make examples higher than actual running costs and that prices may change. They do not establish the cost of a UHD channel, and their per-hour event figures should not be extrapolated to a continuous UHD service without modeling the changed configuration and audience traffic.
Build a fresh estimate with current prices for the intended Region and the exact channel design. MediaLive distinguishes running and idle resource charges: running charges apply to attached inputs and configured outputs, and output charges can apply even when an output is paused. A 24/7 service must therefore be estimated for its intended always-on state, not just for an event window.
Cost inputs to model
- Region and monthly hours of operation.
- MediaLive input processing, every configured output, resolution, codec, frame rate and redundancy path.
- MediaPackage ingest, packaging and origination for the configured endpoints.
- CloudFront data transfer and request assumptions, including the expected audience, viewing duration, bitrate mix and cache behavior.
- Whether the output is UHD only or includes lower-resolution ABR renditions, and whether resources or outputs remain configured while idle or paused.
Use the AWS Pricing Calculator or current service pricing to model those inputs, then compare the estimate with a budget and monitor actual charges after deployment. The evidence available here does not establish a current, UHD-specific 24/7 price; your Region, output design, redundancy and audience assumptions determine the estimate.
Troubleshoot common design and launch problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| The deployed reference solution only produces up to 1080p. | The solution’s published profiles are SD/HD, topping out at 1080p at 30 fps. | Configure and validate a channel-specific UHD output in MediaLive; do not expect the default ladder to provide 4K. |
| A UHD channel or output cannot be created. | The account may lack the required UHD quota, or the input design may encounter the CDI UHD-output constraint. | Check the account’s current MediaLive UHD quota and request an increase if needed. For CDI input, plan for no more than one UHD output encode per channel. |
| The selected service or input option is unavailable. | Regional availability or account quota differs from the assumption used in the design. | Verify the service and input support in the selected Region and inspect the account’s quotas before committing to the architecture. |
| Viewers cannot play the UHD rendition. | The target device, player, codec, delivery format or available bandwidth may not match the output. | Test representative devices and player workflows. Consider adding lower-resolution ABR renditions and confirm format and codec support for the audience. |
| Playback requests to MediaPackage are rejected. | The reference authorization path expects CloudFront to send the configured CDN identifier header. | Check CloudFront’s origin configuration, header forwarding and the stored identifier in Secrets Manager. Verify playback via the intended CloudFront path. |
| Actual spend differs from the event-style estimate. | The estimate may omit always-on hours, configured outputs, redundancy, traffic volume or request and cache assumptions. | Rebuild the estimate for the continuous UHD configuration using current regional pricing, then use AWS budget and cost monitoring to compare estimated and actual use. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your requirement is specifically a pre-recorded YouTube channel that loops uploaded videos, rather than a live contribution feed processed through an AWS broadcast architecture, StreamNeo is a separate, simpler option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It runs the loop in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
