A typical hosted screenshot API runs its browser outside your network, so sending it a private hostname or IP address is not enough. For an internal-only page, run a browser worker inside an approved network segment and expose a tightly controlled capture endpoint to your application.
Why a hosted screenshot API may not reach your private page
A screenshot API receives a URL and asks a browser to load it. The browser must be able to resolve the hostname and connect to the target. A hosted renderer outside your private network does not automatically inherit access to your VPC, VPN, intranet DNS, or localhost. Use a managed service only if its documentation confirms a private connection method, such as a customer-side agent or supported tunnel; a URL parameter alone cannot provide that access.

For a private-network page, the reliable default is to deploy the browser where the page is reachable. The capture request can still come from another service, but the browser process—not merely the API caller—needs the network route.

Choose where the browser should run

Build a controlled Playwright capture service
The example below uses Python and the Playwright library. Deploy it on a host or container that can resolve and connect to your target application. It captures the page’s full scrollable height, returns the PNG bytes, and checks the final HTTP response status. Install Playwright and its Chromium browser in the same deployment environment, following the Playwright Python installation instructions.

browser.close()Replace the example URL with an approved target. In a service, take the URL and any authentication context from an authorized request rather than hard-coding them. Playwright documents viewport and full-page screenshots; setting full_page=True captures the full scrollable page rather than only the visible viewport.

Place and expose the worker
- Deploy the worker in the same private network, VPC, or approved network segment as the application. A container is suitable only when its network configuration gives it the required route and DNS resolution. Playwright’s Docker documentation describes container networking considerations, including host access configuration.
- Expose a narrow internal capture API that accepts authorized requests. Prefer an allowlist of known schemes, hosts, and paths instead of accepting arbitrary URLs.
- Restrict outbound network access at the network layer to the destinations the worker actually needs. A browser can issue requests from the worker’s network position, so the capture endpoint should not act as a general-purpose proxy.
- Return image bytes to the caller and record the target’s response status and relevant capture metadata separately.
- Pin the Playwright package and its matching browser binaries in the deployment. Update them deliberately and use a consistent runtime when comparing screenshots.
Check that the capture is the intended page
An image can be produced even when the application redirected to a login page or rendered an error page. Check the final document status and, where needed, verify an expected title, selector, or application-specific readiness condition before treating the capture as successful. The Urlbox API documentation likewise warns that a rendered login or error page can still produce an image and describes response metadata for the final document status.

Treat an in-network browser as a privileged service. A caller that can choose arbitrary URLs may cause it to request destinations reachable from the worker. The controls below are practical defense-in-depth guidance; the cited materials do not identify one universal library setting that implements the complete policy automatically.

- Allow only the required schemes, hosts, and paths. Revalidate redirects against the same policy rather than trusting the initial URL alone.
- Deny access to link-local and cloud metadata endpoints, and constrain egress with network controls.
- Apply navigation and request timeouts, response-size limits, and page-size limits appropriate to your workload.
- Keep the capture API internal or authenticate and authorize callers; do not expose unrestricted URL capture publicly.
- Keep screenshot API keys and target-site credentials out of URLs and logs. Urlbox documents bearer authentication and warns that query-string API keys may appear in page source or server logs.
- Use target-site authentication only when needed and minimize credential scope and lifetime. Playwright warns that saved authentication state can contain cookies and headers that impersonate a user; protect state files as secrets and exclude them from source control.
Handle authentication without leaking session state
If the target requires a login, give the worker only the minimum credentials needed for the capture. Avoid embedding credentials in the target URL. If you use Playwright’s saved browser state, store it in a protected secret store or restricted filesystem location; it may grant account access through cookies or headers. Rotate or invalidate it when the underlying account or session should no longer be trusted. See Playwright’s authentication documentation for its description of saved state.
Make screenshots reproducible
Pin the operating-system or container image, Playwright version, and matching browser binaries. Rendering can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, and headless mode, so visual comparisons are most meaningful when the capture environment matches the baseline environment. Playwright documents the version-specific relationship between its browser binaries and package in its browser management documentation.

Troubleshoot common failures

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot API capture localhost?
Only if the browser making the capture request runs on the same machine or has a network path to that localhost. A hosted browser’s localhost refers to its own environment, not yours.
Can I expose an internal page publicly just for screenshot capture?
That changes the application’s security boundary and is not necessary for the in-network worker approach. Prefer a controlled capture service inside an approved network segment.
