How to Run a 24/7 Ocean Waves Live Stream on YouTube With OBS

A practical OBS and YouTube Studio walkthrough for a 24/7 ocean waves stream, with encoder settings, copyright cautions, archive limits, and a cloud option.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can run an ocean-waves stream on YouTube with OBS by sending a looping video-and-audio scene to a YouTube encoder stream. Create the stream in YouTube Studio, enter its server URL and stream key in OBS, test your footage and sound, then start OBS and click Go live in Live Control Room. The difficult part is keeping a computer, OBS, and a stable internet connection running continuously—and planning around YouTube’s limits on archives and DVR for streams longer than 12 hours.

What you need before you start

  • A computer that can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate continuously. YouTube does not specify a minimum computer configuration for this particular 24/7 ambient setup, so test your actual machine rather than relying on a generic hardware minimum.
  • A sustained internet connection with upload capacity above the bitrate you choose. Leave headroom instead of setting the stream bitrate equal to the connection’s maximum upload speed.
  • Ocean footage and audio that you created or are licensed to use for live streaming. Check whether your rights also cover territories, archived replays, and monetization.
  • OBS Studio, a YouTube channel with live streaming available, and access to YouTube Studio.

A wired connection or an uninterruptible power supply may be useful considerations for a machine intended to stay online, but neither guarantees uninterrupted streaming. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and monitoring stream health; it does not establish a hardware specification for this workload.

Prepare the ocean video and audio

Choose footage that can loop cleanly

Use a video file or sequence you have the right to broadcast. Check the beginning and end of the loop for abrupt changes, black frames, mismatched wave motion, or a sudden change in ambient sound. Preview the loop for long enough to notice seams before going live. A still or slowly moving ocean scene may not benefit from 4K or 60 fps; choose resolution and frame rate based on the source material, the visual result you want, the computer’s encoding capacity, and sustainable upload speed.

Set up a focused OBS scene

Create a scene containing the ocean footage and its intended audio source. Confirm that the video repeats as expected and that the audio does not stop when the visual source loops. Watch the audio meters and listen for clipping, silence, unwanted desktop sounds, or a distracting loop seam. YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the real broadcast, not just checking that an encoder can connect.

Create the YouTube encoder stream

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select Create > Go live.
  2. In Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream and enter its title, description, visibility, and stream options. Review the selected latency setting: YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering. An ambient broadcast without real-time interaction usually has less reason to prioritize low latency.
  3. Choose the encoder workflow and copy the YouTube stream server URL and stream key.
  4. Keep the stream key private. It functions as a credential for sending video to your channel; reset it in YouTube if you believe it has been exposed.

Configure OBS for YouTube

  1. Open OBS and go to Settings > Stream. Choose YouTube if it is offered as a service, or select a custom service and enter the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. OBS and YouTube may change interface labels over time, so use the current labels shown in your installed version.
  2. Go to Settings > Output and choose an encoder and bitrate your computer and upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 and recommends constant bitrate (CBR). The appropriate bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; use YouTube’s current settings table rather than applying one number to every stream. For H.264, YouTube gives 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps as recommended examples.
  3. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
  4. Choose a resolution and frame rate under Settings > Video that suit the footage and your sustained upload. YouTube transcodes incoming live video for viewers, but that does not guarantee a particular playback quality for every viewer or connection.
  5. Set audio levels in OBS, then run a representative test with the actual scene, motion, and sound. Check stream health, audio/video sync, dropped frames, black frames, loop transitions, and any unintended audio sources.

See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current codec-specific table. Its recommendations can change, and bitrate is not a substitute for testing the connection under the conditions in which you plan to stream.

Start the broadcast and monitor it

  1. In OBS, select Start Streaming.
  2. Return to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and wait for the incoming encoder preview.
  3. Check the preview and stream health. When the scheduled stream is ready, select Go live in Live Control Room.
  4. Keep access to the computer, OBS, and network available so you can respond to encoder, power, or connection problems. YouTube’s encoder workflow does not promise that OBS will restart a stream after a failure.

For the first broadcast, stay present and check the stream at intervals. A short test can reveal setup problems, but it does not establish that the computer and connection will remain reliable unattended for days.

Plan 24/7 coverage around archives and DVR

A continuous stream is not the same as a guaranteed continuous archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a replay, consider ending and restarting the broadcast in sessions shorter than 12 hours, and make a local recording if the footage must be preserved. YouTube also warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shorter sessions require planned handoffs and can interrupt the live page, so weigh archive needs against the goal of one uninterrupted broadcast. Do not assume OBS will recover from a computer shutdown, application crash, or lost connection without a recovery plan you have tested.

Use footage and audio you have rights to broadcast

YouTube requires you to have the necessary rights for the content in a live stream. Use original material or confirm that a license expressly covers live streaming, the territories where viewers may watch, any replay or archive, and any intended monetization. Keep license records available.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If identified content remains after a warning, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the broadcast. A license does not necessarily prevent a Content ID interruption: the rights owner may also need to add your channel to its allowlist. Resolve that with the rights owner before relying on licensed music or footage for a long-running stream. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

Do not assume a repetitive stream will qualify for monetization

Copyright permission and YouTube Partner Program eligibility are separate questions. YouTube’s monetization policy applies to live streams and describes repetitive or mass-produced material as potentially inauthentic, and repurposed material without significant original contribution as reused content. YouTube clarified the repetitious-content policy to include repetitive or mass-produced content and renamed it “inauthentic content” on July 15, 2025. A repeated ocean scene or audio loop may warrant particular care; original footage, sound design, or a distinct creative concept can add meaningful value, but no single change guarantees monetization approval. Read the current YouTube channel monetization policies.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube receives no signal Wrong server URL or stream key, or OBS is not sending output. Compare the OBS stream settings with the current values in YouTube Studio, confirm the stream is started in OBS, and reset the key if it may have been exposed.
Stream health reports connection or dropped-frame problems The upload connection may not sustain the selected bitrate, or may be unstable. Run an upload-speed test, leave bitrate headroom, and test again at a lower sustainable bitrate or resolution using YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
Video stutters or OBS struggles to encode The chosen resolution, frame rate, or encoder load may exceed what the computer can sustain. Test a lower resolution or frame rate and inspect OBS and YouTube stream health while the representative scene is running. The sources do not specify a universal minimum computer configuration.
Audio is silent, clipped, out of sync, or unexpectedly noisy The wrong source may be active, levels may be unsuitable, or loop points may not match. Listen to the full scene in OBS, check its audio meters and source selection, and test the loop transition before relaunching.
The live stream is interrupted over music or video YouTube may have identified third-party content; a license may not include all necessary uses or the channel may not be allowlisted. Review the rights and any Content ID notice, contact the rights owner about channel allowlisting, and use original or properly cleared material.
The stream has no complete replay or viewers cannot rewind far back The broadcast exceeded 12 hours, where archive capture and DVR functionality may be limited. Use shorter sessions if archives matter, and keep a local recording backup where preservation is important.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube channel to stay live without keeping a computer and home connection running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed, and it streams to YouTube only. StreamNeo keeps the stream running from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K at 60 fps for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required; one free day is available per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. The same product is included on every plan; only the billing period changes. See StreamNeo, or start the free day.
